“Portugal best secrets”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

Alentejo is a sparsely populated region of golden plains, smooth hills and old white villages. It feature beautiful places and historical sites on unique scenic locations. Once a land of large farms, hard work and poverty, it was for many years just a crossing place between Lisbon and Algarve. But Alentejo slowly become a destination on its own, gaining a well deserved reputation of quality for the wise traveller, looking for peaceful locations, unspoiled villages and high quality tourism. Alentejo poverty gave also birth to some of the finest portuguese recipes: traditionally limited to bread, water and a few bits of pork meat, locals mastered the use of herbs and spices in order to produce unique and delicate flavors, which are today a must of Portuguese cuisine.

Casa do Plátano is located in Arraiolos, at the heart of Alentejo. It is a traditional manor house located in the main square that was recently converted to a quality guest house. The colour themed rooms are simple, comfortable, and feature a superb decoration. The service is familiar, nice and flawless. There is an extreme care in all the details, from the beautiful night candles, the cozy common areas and the relaxing smell. On the outside, a small swimming pool provides a good option for refreshing on hot summer days. Overall, it offers a unique combination of luxury and simplicity.

The breakfast, served on a common table and without schedule restrictions, is of high quality. It does not include hot dishes, but it features a very good assortment of local ham, cheese, bread and cakes, further to the usual yoghurt, cereals, milk, coffee, fresh fruit, etc. There are excellent restaurants in Arraiolos, so there are plenty of dinning of options around, albeit slightly overpriced for portuguese standards.

Since there are some bikes available, if you are in good shape, you may try to visit Évora (~20Km away) following the beautiful bicycle track that interconnects Arraiolos and Évora. This track makes use of the old and now inactive train line, is traffic free and feature smooth gradients and, therefore, it is more than adequate for the occasional rider.

In short, a unique place in the center of a beautiful and peaceful village. Casa do Plátano is one of those magic place that makes up Alentejo one of Portugal best kept secrets.

a modern hotel in the heart of Arraiolos, where we were made to feel very welcome by our hosts immediately. Everywhere was clean, the beds comfortable and breakfast ample, with lovely views from our room and pleasant areas to sit and relax inside and out.

We stayed for two nights in Casa do Platano and directly received a hearty welcome, the staff helped us with our suitcases and we were surprised by the lovely room in red tints. The bathroom is very modern with lotions and gels from Rituals. The bed was very comfi. What we often miss in hotels is practicality. Here you could see, every small detail has been taken care of. When my laptop could not connect with their wireless system, I immediately received a spare laptop of the owner. The breakfast is elaborate with fresh fruits and cheeses from the area and home made cakes and jams. What we liked best, as we have a B & B ourselves, is personal attention. As well as the owner as the lovely lady working there, are genuine in their approach and interest in their
guests needs.I have seen many hotels in my former career as purser with KLM airlines and Casa do Platano is the best !!!

Room Tip: We loved the red first chakra room, very quiet and nice ambience

The whole atmosphere is very nice. The house is lovely and smells good.
The rooms, as you can see from the photos I have posted, are very nice with nice forniture.
The breakfast is served around a big table or in small tables around the pool. You can have homemade cakes or local pastry, ham, cheese or salami, yougurt with fresh fruit... not to mention the Nespresso coffee.
The pool is not very big but it is just you need after a hot day visiting aoround (Evora, Estremoz, Borba, Vila Liçosa are some places you can aesily reach from here)
The owners are extremely kind and helpful willing to provide suggestions on where to eat or things to do.

This is a relatively new guest house opened in Dec 2010 by a Portuguese couple, so everything is brand new and perfectly equipped. The colour themed rooms are stunning and very comfortable. What we enjoyed most was the family feel of the place - not crowded but very friendly. Breakfast is served round a large table - delicious bread, meats, cheese, fruits.....The pool is relatively small but there's plenty of sun loungers to rest on. Go here if you want a high quality Portuguese casa. It's not cheap so far as Portugal goes, but go for a treat!
