For such a small time, Balestrand surprisingly has a number of good options for food. Without a doubt, Ciderhuset is definitely the best of these options. Our meal there was the best meal we had during our entire 2-week trip to Scandinavia.
The restaurant is location off King Bele's Way, about a 15 minute scenic walk from the center of town. True to its name, it's located on a farm that grows apples, and the food is all local/mostly organic. The veranda where you eat is really cute and overlooks nice scenery. The staff were impeccably professional, prompt, and professional. Because there weren't many seats, the restaurant felt very cozy.
The highlight, of course, was the food. My traveling partner is a vegetarian and she had absolutely no difficulty finding options. We had a baked cheese appetizer, a vegetarian pie, a veal dish with an apple-based sauce and perfectly cooked vegetables, apple pie, and two glasses of their apple cider. The total bill came out to be about 750 NOK, which is really not that much more than one would pay for a comparable meal of the same quality in the U.S.
I would highly, highly recommend anyone in the area to splurge on this restaurant; you won't regret it. I would recommend making reservations in advance (though it wasn't necessary in our case since there were relatively few dines). The restaurant is not dressy, though you probably don't want to look completely dressed down.
