Breews beer, destills liquer, wood fired oven for pizzas++, makes bread and roasts coffee beans. All this is available to visitors along with detailed explanations of the processes if acquired. Interested visitors is highly appreciated! Such high degree of dedication to drinks and food as Mette and Anders is displaying is very rare. A must visit place in southern Norway.

“Very cute restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2014

We visit provianten very often and we never regret. Provianten have one of the best environments, nice music and tasty food. Bear made in own brewery, bread and homemade ice is a top of the line! However, there is a place for improvements, lack of staff making every order to take longer than usually in such a high quality restaurants. Otherwise, Provianten is one of the best, for sure not only in Mandal, but in a whole Vest-Agder!

“Good for Mandal but.......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

I always visit this restaurant during my annual trip to Mandal as the food is pretty good and probably the best you will get in the town. The location on the river is lovely with seating outside if the weather is good enough. Inside it is very comfortable and the restaurant has a modern feel. However tourists will find eating out very pricey in Norway and this restaurant is no exception. Main courses are between 250 and 350 krone and a beer or glass of house wine 89 krone. Ouch!

“The most horrible experience in my restaurant going life.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

Provianten's a beautifully located restaurant, they have their own brewery as well as coffee production. That's the good part.

The bad part of the visit starts when you enter the restaurant. You walk straight into a restaurant who think it's a supermarket, selling canned soup (apparently they don't value their own food), duck fat and olive oil. Before you've had the time to look around you're basically shoved into their brewery, we asked to be seated directly but apparently it's restaurant policy that ALL customers visit the brewery before dinner. I do like beer, but I do not like things shoved in my face.

After sitting in the brewery for about 10 minutes just waiting to be seated a rushed waitress came and took us to our table, our menus were laid on the table, not handed to us, and she rushed off. They seemed very understaffed and disorganized, no one seemed to be in control.
It took a good 15 minutes before the waitress returned, asked for our order and ran off again, 10 minutes later our drinks arrived, at least we got what we ordered.

The music during the entire visit was a weird mix of obscure jazz, not what I'd expected at a restaurant/brewery located in a prime fishing village on the bank of the river; I just can't see the fishermen being jazz people to be honest.

Once our food arrived it turned out that the waitress took our order wrong, my friend had gotten the wrong dish, she apologized and asked us to wait 10 minutes for the replacement. 15 minutes later it arrived, and yes he got the right dish the second time. The big surprise came with the bill. We were charged for the mistake she made, both dishes were on the bill.
Asking her about it she referred to the owners, it's apparently their policy that customers pay for everything that ends up at the table, the owners themselves were fortunately out of town and could not respond themselves.

We paid the bill and left to the bar next door, where we enjoyed the rest of the evening in an establishment sufficiently staffed with qualified barmen and women.

I would not only not recommend people to visit Provianten, I'd recommend people NOT to visit Provianten. You'll get the worst service of your life from unskilled and understaffed crew. Food's ok, but not for the price you pay. I'd take a burger at the next door joint any day of the week over an "experience" at Provianten.

“One of the best restaurant in Mandal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

They make the food their own way, and I am always satisfied. They also make their own beer, that taste very good. Well worth a try. The prices are a bit steap, but the food is worth every penny.
