“Cooking class exceeded our expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

As part of our recent family trip to Italy I wanted the 4 of us to take a cooking class together in Tuscany. Our travel agency booked us for a cooking class at Castello di Tornano. It exceeded all of our expectations. Victor did a great job translating, assisting in the kitchen and introducing us to the Castello's wines. Franca patiently taught us how to make a fabulous 4 course italian meal. We enjoyed every course and the wines that had been paired with them. Since returning to Canada I have tried a number of the dishes with success. Not as good as they were with Franca's assistance ..... and certainly not as good as they were when we ate them on the fabulous patio at Castello di Tornano, but good never the less.

We did not stay at the hotel but the spot was beautiful and the food and wine was great. Thank you Victor and Franca for a great afternoon and an experience my family will always remember.

Such a great location, although you do need a car to get there and around the local area. Our room was in the castle & had typically old furniture but it was fantastic. Definitely something to experience. The pool is great, especially with in the hot weather. Beware though, the dinner at the hotel is pretty expensive, you do get a lot of servings for the price, but with one waiter, we waited so long between each plate that we eventually just left before all of the meal had been served. Other guests who arrived well after us, were being served their meals ahead of us. The waiter, was definitely not efficient. He could only manage to carry a small amount of items in or out meaning that he had to make extra trips back and forward. I would stay here again, but avoid the restaurant.

I have nothing but great things to say about this establishment. We stayed here as part of our 10th anniversary Italy trip and it didn't disappoint. It is very quaint and all the staff was exceptionally friendly. We stayed in the residences and were able to get WiFi. While our room was small, we booked what I think was the smallest room on purpose so we could partake in every activity the resort has to offer. Many rooms were much larger. And even though our room was smaller than the others, we had our own private patio and stayed out there in the evenings drinking wine and privately listening to the music of our choice.

The food exceeded our expectations. The Chef is wonderful and his kitchen is immaculate. We were fortunate enough to have taken his 3 hour cooking class - just my husband and I and it was the best part of our trip. We made our entire lunch and were provided prosecco and a bottle of our choice of wine. Not only was the food fantastic but we walked away with some great recipes. What surprised me the most about our cooking class, and the cooking at Tornano in general, is that all of the vegetables are literally grown and hand picked (by the chef) from his incredible garden. So, during our class, we walked outside, down to the garden and picked our fresh zucchini which we then prepared for lunch. Italian home cooking at it's finest!

We also participated in a wine tasting at the castle's wine cellar. This was very unique compared to other wine tours we went on. At those places, you tasted wine and felt just like a customer at a bar. Here, everyone was seated at a table (there were 5 of us) and the somilier taught us about Italian wine, the wine making process and his experiences as a wine maker in general. It was an intimate 60-90 minute event drinking fabulous wine along with meats, cheeses and bread so we could also get a sense of what types of wine pairs best. Another truly great experience.

Finally, we went horseback riding through the Tornano vineyards. Again, amazing. It was a little hot outside which made it a little uncomfortable. However, we quickly forgot how hot we were when we were taking in the most amazing vineyard views. That is another thing that I should mention about this property...it sits up quite high in the hills and so the view from your room and the dinner table are priceless.

Other than the above, it should be noted that the castle is quite spectacular. There is a wonderful deck up top with even greater views. One night, we sat up top with some other guests we met and watched the stars. It was just lovely. Last, but not least, this property has a great pool. It is not heated but in the summer, that is a blessing. We swam in it every day we were there.

I cannot recommend the Castello di Tornano enough. It is not a "five star" resort but you definitely get five star treatment along with five star food and the perfect get away from the hustle and bustle of Rome and the other cities.

Room Tip: I think WiFi may be a problem if you stay in the castle. It is easier to get WiFi in the residences...

We stayed 2 nights in one of the villas with some friends a couple weeks ago. We brought along our dog. Which the workers were very nice with. We all enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming back. I would highly recommend staying in one of the villas instead of rooms in the castle itself.
Overall Positives-
Traditional Italy feel but modernized
The views where fantastic and the grounds were very well maintained
Pool is very clean and plenty of lounge chairs and benches throughout the property although still felt very relaxing and not overcrowded
Wine tasting (knowledgable worker took us through the local brand wines in the great atmosphere)
All the workers and other hotel guests were very friendly
Located close to a great little town and some good restaurants

Overall Negatives-
Our shower ran out of hot water after the first day and never returned
No fans but we were pretty comfortable with the natural breeze

Room Tip: The villas are the way to go. There is one with a personal hot tube but since we went in the summer...

Beautiful place, quiet and peaceful with lovely gardens. Our apartment was charming, tastefully decorated in a rustic style, with a large garden and terraced area. The pool is fantastic-although it was a little cold. Our only disappointment was that when we climbed the tower, the jacuzzi wasn't there anymore. Great views though! We really enjoyed the wine tasting with Serena. The food in the restaurant was good and the wine excellent. Lovely, friendly and helpful staff. Would love to go back!

We recently returned from spending 3 weeks in Italy, of which we spent 4 nights at Castello di Tornano. This truly was an experience to remember. First, we had booked a room in the Tower, and upon checking in we were shown to our room, a beautifully decorated room that immediately made you feel as if you had traveled back in time. With all the modern conveniences, the room still had the feel of a medieval castle. The common areas in the castle also were impeccably decorated, feeling comfortable, yet period appropriate. From our visits to a few other castles in the region that offered accommodations, this was quite a step above the others.

The highlight of our stay, and possibly even our trip, was a wine tasting with Victor. First, the wines of Tornano are truly superb in our opinion, rivaling those in the region that charged quite a bit more. Secondly, the wine tasting was truly an experience. We spent about 2 hours tasting a variety of wines offered by Tornano, with Victor explaining in detail the characteristics, things to look for, and pairing the wine with local meats and cheeses of appropriate strengths for the boldness of the wine, as well as bread with home made jelly, olive oil and olives. The entire event was truly a wonderful learning experience. We in fact learned more in this two hours than we have in multiple wine tasting trips to Napa Valley. As a side note, all the other wineries we visited in the area conducted wine tasting as we were accustomed to back home, with someone pouring one tasting after another, without food pairings or any real background beyond a sentence or two. I highly recommend you try the Chianti Classico, an amazing wine for it's price. For a wine hard to beat, try the Reserve!

The restaurant is fabulous, with a nicely done Continental breakfast each morning, and dinner available. We only had dinner at the property once, and truly enjoyed the meal.

I would highly recommend a stay at Tornano during a trip to Tuscany. You will be hard pressed to find a genuine castle experience as comfortable and beautifully situated as this one, combined with the quality wines and Victor's expertise as a sommelier and the time he takes with you in a wine tasting, it is something not to be missed!

Room Tip: Definitely book a room in the Tower!
