“Beautiful location, shame about some of the guests...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2011

Hotel location is stunning with views over the valley. Appears to be quite remote on website photos but is actually walking distance from small town of Gaiole in Chianti so convenient if you don't want to eat in the hotel (which is very good but top-end prices so good to have an alternative). Only complaint was some quite noisy guests - hotel seems to be popular with American tour groups so the tranquil Tuscan atmosphere didn't always extend to the pool and terrace areas (would think twice if you are booking as a honeymoon location). There is also a 10 euro per person per day charge for sports facilities which does actually include the swimming pool - the website does mention it but we just assumed that was only for gym use, bike hire etc. Don't be put off by "the annex" referred to on the website - we stayed there and it's a beautiful building with old roof beams, tiled floor and 4-poster bed - one of the rooms also has it's own separate terrace. Overall a beautiful hotel and setting with friendly, helpful staff and when it's quiet, it's perfect!

On a walking Holiday in Chianti we stayed at this Hotel and it was very nice indeed. The Hotel was quite empty when we stayed and our room , 3, was a little small but very comfortable and clean. The Hotel has a Restaurant that we did not use which seemed to have a lot of character about it and the Terrace has a great view to sit with Beer or Wine and relax. The Breakfast was top class in the morning and the service from the staff was very good.
The Hotel is a fantastic building with an Old Church attached , a lovely place to stay and relax
We went into the town for Dinner and had a great simple Tuscan Meal at the Ristrante Carloni, very good.

Great place if you are looking for a flat in a historical setting. Beware that the castle has two sites, but they are both worthwile. We didn't stay in the main castle - we stayed in the historical borgo, located 3 minutes away by car. the only complaint I have is that the internet service is not available there. The flat was incredibly spacious and clean.

My husband and I honeymooned at this hotel, and we generally loved it.

In response to the negative review: It's in a rural area in Italy and has nowhere near the noise reported. There are barking dogs and other noises, but it's not continuous or bothersome. The staff was excellent and extremely helpful. They went out of their way to explain maps, make restaurant reseverations (we didn't love this hotel restaurant or the value, so went "up the street" to another hotel which was superb! can't remember the name), and help us anytime.

The internet access was spotty, but it was also spotty other places. Breakfast is free and plenty. The pool area is lovely. We didn't go in either pool since it was a little chilly in early May.

The only thing we would have preferred is knowing beforehand that the area is not as close to other Tuscan towns that were recommended, like San Gimigiano. It's about 45 minutes, but after a few long car drives through the narrow, windy roads (inlcuding car sickness and a near hit with a big truck) we decided to stay local (i.e. Greve, Raddha). As an aside, Discovery Chianti (a bike and hike guide) is wonderful and can drive you to the local attractions and wineries.

My wife and I booked here last minute while we were sitting at a cafe in Siena. We decided on a Friday to leave Geneva for a long weekend and we knew we may get slim pickings for a hote l - usually I am a big planner and very choosey. But we were so pleased with the Spaltenna - a lovely location, lots of charm in the rooms and from the staff. The breakfast was nice and we ate in the dining room both nights. It was a little pricey but we found the food to be good. It was truffle season.... I would be glad to go back any time.

We booked the Castello di Spaltenna after looking for quite some time at other hotels in Tuscany and Chianti (specifically Castellina, Radda and Montalcino). At the time of our booking, the hotel received a rating of 89% on TripAdvisor so we were a little apprehensive about what we were going to find. Immediately upon arrival we were completely blown away! As someone that has traveled extensively and stayed in many very nice hotels, I would rank the Castello di Spaltenna among the best or the best. The grounds were immaculately kept and the inside of the hotel (guest rooms and public areas) were spotless. It was most impressive how the renovation of the castle was done in such a way that the ancient feel of staying in a castle was preserved while also providing tastefully presented modern conveniences. Quality linens, bathroom fixtures, furniture and windows are just some examples of the care with which this property was developed. From the minute we arrived until we left the staff was falling over themselves to answer our questions (in good English) and ensure our stay was perfect. The overall experience was noting short of magical and we would return without hesitation.

This is the first time I've ever written an online remark about a hotel but I couldn't resist as Castello di Spaltenna is such a remarkable property. Lead by an extremely competent manager, Guido Conti, the team of truly friendly personnel make a stay in this historic building an experience well beyond what one would typically expects. The quality of dining is also noteworthy as is the value for cost.
Newly contructed buildings or recently restored buildings can offer modern elements making for a pleasant stay but a structure with a deep history and a proud, genuinely friendly staff, makes the stay an enriched holiday experience. We were constantly met with positive replies in consideration for our special events requests. The staff willingly stayed very late in the evening each evening to allow the revelry of the guests to carry on then met these guests each morning with a big smile and highly courteous service.
Bravo to the team at Castello di Spaltenna. May we have the good fortune to return soon!
