“Beautiful period hotel and lovely garden”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

I have stayed at this hotel many times. Accomodations are satisfactory, room is clean, staff is friendly with several fluent in English, French, and German. The parking lot is large, a plus as that is not the case with many in town Italian hotels. The location for this hotel is ideal, with many shops and restaurants in easy walking distance. The local Wed. am market is right outside the door and a fantastic place to browse and shop all kinds of things: fish to furniture. Just beware the shower/tubs are a bit weird, ask for a shower only room if you want a real shower. Otherwise it is a large jetted tub with an attached hose which generally sprays the entire floor with water. Makes it hard to wash your hair. Also the internet is pretty slow so you wont' be doing much except checking email -- not useful for really working from the hotel. A few rooms have a desk built into the credenza/bureau, but most only have a small vanity table so not really useful for working. The gardens are wonderful and really nice to walk. Restaurant is good although menu doesn't change much over time. Be aware: this is a popular stop for bus tours of seniors during summer and fall. You can get overwhelmed by two busloads of tourists at a time, which leaves the single guest feeling a bit ostrasized when the groups "take over" the dining room. This is not a deliberate action of the staff but more the attitude of the tourist groups; some groups are very open and loose and other groups are clique-ish and it just depends.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the gardens or a shower only room

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2012

I recently stayed for 5 nights with a friend on a visit to Martina Franca as my parents stay in the area and we really enjoyed our time here. The hotel provided everything we needed and the service was great.

We had booked a twin room and were given a room with two bedrooms, large bathroom and big terrace! The rooms were very spacious, clean and well equipped with large wardrobes, mini fridge and flat screen tv's in both rooms (although we didn't turn them on once). The room was serviced every day and we had plenty of towels and fresh biscuits were put in the room every day. The bathroom only had a bath with a shower attachment so a stand up shower was not possible but this didn't really bother us. Worth asking the hotel if there are rooms with stand up showers if you would not be happy with this arrangement.

Breakfast was good with enough choice and you can eat inside or out. We had some lunch twice and were well catered for. The staff and service were great. They provided beach towels for the pool, wi-fi is free and they let us check out late in the afternoon on our last day without a problem. Most notably our waiter at breakfast and lunch was very nice. He made sure we had everything we needed but equally left us to relax and enjoy things. He spoke good English so was able to give us advice and chat about the area. The reception was also helpful when needed. My friend got an eye infection and they actually went to the pharmacy with her to help explain!

The grounds of the hotel are really pleasant with lots of greenery, seating areas and a nice pool area where we happily spent every day. The hotel did not seem to have many other guests which we enjoyed but they did have a lot of evening functions on. We quite enjoyed seeing this and it didn't interfere with our stay as the place is big enough to accommodate this and guests and there was no noise when we slept. There is a super market over the road, the we'd market is right on the doorstep and it is a 5 minute stroll to the shops, caves and restaurants of the lovely martina franca.

Although this hotel is not modern luxury and perhaps lacks one or two expectations of a 4 star I have given our stay 5 out of 5 as the hotel more than delivered on what we needed and surpassed our expectations in terms of the space and service we were given. I will be returning again!

Room Tip: Email or speak to hotel in advance about most suitable room? We had room 29 which was spacious, clea...

I stayed for three nights at the Park Hotel San Michele as part of a tour group. The hotel is officially rates 4 stars but it does not deserve it. Rooms in the new part are small and do not appear particularly new. Rooms might be larger in the old part of the hotel but I have not seen them. Common areas give the impression of being old and dusty, carpet has seen better times. Staff is not friendly and it never smiles. Breakfast was not particularly good either even if it appeared quite large. Only corn flakes were available as cereals, there were no skimmed yogurts, there was a very limited selection of pastries and bread. Savoury food appeared more abundant but I did not try it so I cannot tell. However, dinners were ok and the vegatable and dessert tables were good.

Room Tip: rooms in the old part might be better / larger

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2011

We were travelling independently around Puglia using public transport and stayed 3 nights at this hotel. We had good service from very friendly staff. Our room and bathroom were very spacious if somewhat dated. The hotel hosts coach parties and conferences and is the venue for the local Rotary and Lions clubs. It is in an excellent location, quiet but only a short walk to the very beautiful centro storico of the town, and not too far from the station. The view from the balcony was good, swifts diving around every evening. But there were no chairs on the balcony, just a rather ancient sun-bed.

Room Tip: Our room (24) was very large with a balcony.

The hotel is in close to the center of the old town of Martina Franca and is located in a sort of park away from traffic. My room was very nice with a high ceiling and double doors to a large balcony. It could have been the president's suite. The breakfast buffet was excellent for Italian standards where you normally get cakes and cookies. The staff was very friendly and helpfull and the free WIFI internet worked well.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2010

The hotel is a mixture of styles – the public areas seem quite old and traditional, but the rooms have been refurbished in a very modern minimalistic style. Our room was quite large and had masses of storage space for clothes etc. We had a door leading out to a narrow communal balcony overlooking the pool and gardens. Everything in the hotel was clean and well kept. The gardens are quite pretty and on the day we arrived was hosting a wedding reception.

The hotel is about a 10 minute stroll to Piazza Septembre which is at the entrance to the ‘old town’ where most of the bars and restaurants are. On the same trip we also visited Sorrento and Amalfi and Martina Franca is far less touristy, although it does attract quite a few Italian tourists. We found that very few people here spoke English (in comparison to Sorrento and Amalfi). We found only one restaurant which had translated the menu into English so at the very least you need to be able to order food and drink in Italian.

The Reception staff spoke a limited amount of English in comparison to our hotels in Sorrento and Amalfi (but still better than my Italian!). However, when we had a problem contacting our car rental company to sort out a problem, the Reception staff were very helpful indeed.

Just a few of words of warning. (1)The electricity sockets in the hotel are not the standard European ones (see photos) and the adaptors we had taken with us did not fit. We had to ask Reception for an additional adaptor and they only had one they could lend to us. (2) There are 2 public computers in the Reception area for which you have to pay 2 Euros. The display on the one we had was so flickery and faint that we couldn’t decipher the numbers of a telephone number we were trying to find. (3) Wednesday is Market day in Martina Franca and the market is set up immediately outside the gates of the car park to the hotel. No one had told us about this and when we were leaving on our last day, we had to drive through the middle of it!!

Very nice hotel which was centrally located. Lovely gardens, shame it was too cold for us to use the pool. Rooms were as expected for a 4 star hotel and we were lucky enough to have a little terrace to get a few hours of sun. Quick stroll into town, would recommend eating at the Piazzetta Garibaldi for something simple and tasty.
