“Good seafood”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

We stopped here for lunch and ordered the eggplant and peppers as an appetizer and two of the fish dishes on the menu for our main course. The fish was fresh and well-prepared. The interior of the restaurant was appointed with maritime memorabilia and the background music, soft so that one could carry on a conversation, was USA American hits of the 50's and 60's.

“An outstanding Trattoria ... not to be missed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

We are just back from our first trip to the Salentina peninsula. Despite the unseasonal cool showery weather, we were enchanted... not least with Gallipoli which must be one of its most beautiful towns.

We were lucky enough to park neat the Trattoria Portolano which looked ideal for lunch. As London 'foodies' I like to think we are discriminating but hugely appreciative of great cooking and warm hospitality....and this restaurant had both. Owner Franco's welcome was wonderful...and the food that came out of the kitchen was an amazing authentic cuisine. Wonderful fresh fish and vegetables prepared with fascinating touches of Moorish influence.

I came back inspired by the range and originality of the antipasti and determined to reproduce some of those flavours...

It took a good deal of paddling in the Ionian Sea in the afternoon to work off a really fabulous meal with splendid wines at very reasonable prices! Grazie Franco e Lucia!

“The host is the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

Be careful if the host says that he is bringing you a little sample of his "antipasto" because the portion is so large, you won't be able to stomach anything else. The food is delicious and the atmosphere great.

“Friendliest hosts and best value for money in Gallipoli!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2009

Franco and Lucia are the most charming and welcoming hosts you could hope to come across, the restaurant has been newly rennovated and is delightful, the food is outstanding and the price is more than reasonable. What more could you want?

It can be difficult to find good places to eat in Gallipoli at fair prices, particularly during the busy summer period. I have recommended Portolano to an infinite number of friends, both locals and those who have come to visit me in Salento from abroad, and all of them have been delighted by Portolano!

Just let Franco guide you. He knows what's best on any particular day. He'll bring out a series of antipasti, both seafood and vegetables and all local specialities. Next comes the pasta.... Mmmmmmm.... Lucia's 'Gnocchi on the rocks' is fantastic, but so is the fish and pasta soup, and the fresh pasta with calamaro... it's all great. If you can manage a second course (swordfish or some other kind of grilled fish typically) you are a better man than I!

Don't neglect to order a 'sgroppino' for after ... lemon sorbet drowned in vodka. It's just the pick me up you need before stepping out of Portolano and back down to earth!
