What can I say that hasn't been said many times before, including by me in my review last October? If you've never fancied the "all inclusive" format then I suggest that you try the Nastro Azzurro. You will not be disappointed, except for the weight that you'll inevitably put on because of the wonderful food. (I put on 7 lbs this time, a slight improvement on the 9 lbs last year.)
This excellent hotel attracts a LOT of repeat business, including me, and for very good reasons. It does everything right. It's not big, with just 120 bedrooms in the two blocks so it's a very friendly place. Everyone, guests and staff, seems to have a smile on their faces all the time.
I fell completely in love with Italy when I first visited in 1979, so much so that I have to revisit every so often to get my "fix" and this hotel does that job very well. It's VERY Italian in every way, including the excellent and varied food prepared by Head Chef Vincenzo and his team. None of that awful "international cuisine" here - it's full-blown Italian, with the best risotto and ravioli that I've had anywhere. Lunch on the terrace above the pool area is a particular delight.
In many ways, this hotel is five-star, although the "standard" room that we had this year was four-star but still very pleasant. The service from all the staff is exemplary so it's a bit unfair to single anyone out. However, I'd like to thank Anna, who kept our room spotless and always had a smile, despite having to clean 22 rooms every day. Also, I'd like to ask Maitre D' Angelo and Bar Manager Carmine to pass on our thanks to all their colleagues for making our latest stay so enjoyable. And, of course, I mustn't forget the staff on Reception or the excellent Thomsons reps, Jane and Georgia, who both worked so hard and made the holiday so special.
Personally, wherever I go, I prefer to stay in low rise hotels in spacious grounds, rather than in town and city centres. This hotel has a spectacular setting on top of a hill 320 metres up (about 1,100 ft) with spectacular views in all directions and with some very good hill walking from the door, so take some lightweight walking shoes. When you do want to go into Sorrento itself, the courtesy bus takes about 15 minutes and is very efficient so it's the best of both worlds.
So, another thoroughly enjoyable holiday - we will be back! Highly recommended.
