“Nice holiday base ,but disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2014

We arrived at hotel and thought very nice all been recently refurbished. Lovely and clean but not a five star all inclusive . Safe and mini bar in room good tea/coffee was kept to a minimum amount and only soft drink in fridge.l
Draught beer in water bottles in bar fridge as no pump. We went for 9 days and to be honest it felt longer poolside nice and general cleanliness good. Beach nice.
Bar snacks and food all boring.
I eat mainly salad as veggy but my husband said all hot food was cold or lukewarm. Not much variety same old stuff every day and we are sure they recycled some of the things like fried eggs and boiled eggs from morning put back out in evening.
General area around hotel is very nice usual pain in the bums who pester you to go to their eateries but all good natured we visited Nemos a couple of times one day so we could have something hot to eat.
Cocktails boring and served in plastic for all inclusive. If you paid you got a glass with a straw and a slice of fruit. We hired a car in the end and that was quite good value even though My husband managed to lose us in the mountains. TOP TIP take a map and remember where the sun sets in relation to your hotel a bit basic I know but it got us back to hotel.
Anyway not sure if this was just end of season run down but I won't go back there.
Strange thing about room Jacuzzi bath/shower had roller blind you could lift so there was like a viewing window to bedroom area was this to watch TV as could not see the sea from it Peculiar!

We know it was end of season but spa facilities were all but finished not that we asked too much but costs were quite high. Pool bar was closed after 17th October due to high winds and we were told they had laid of staff as guest numbers went down.

Room Tip: Sea view worth it

We have been holidaying in this area for 25 years and love Crete and the people of Crete, however in all that time we never imagined we would be staying in this 5* hotel as we usually go self catering.
Last June 2014 we went all inclusive for the first time at the Kyknos Beach Hotel which is just down the road from the Aktia and its was amazing. Good food good drinks best hotel beds ever and wonderful staff, when we had chance to get an unplanned weeks holiday we found this hotel after the Kyknos was fully booked. We thought five stars great just glad we booked last minute and got a big discount.
The room we were in overlooked the main road at the front of the hotel and although the view was not as good as the sea views the rooms were clean and had a safe and good AC that was included in the price, the WIFI was not very good at all. They supplied lovely clean fluffy towels for use at the pool or beach, the pool loungers had nice cushions on, but the pool was very cold and the walls needed cleaning. The toilets by the infinity pool were the best I have ever seen.
When we went it was on a late flight and the transfer took longer than usual we were met by the desk porter, he was a very miserable man and we were not offered any food although as it was October and a Sunday all the restaurants around were closed. The room however does have coffee and tea making facilities and is stocked free on all inclusive with water and small bottles of coke etc.
There was only one bar open and the beer was decanted from I don't know where into water bottles, not very nice although George at the bar was really nice. Indoor pool was closed as was the children's pool and the Jacuzzi. The al a carte restaurant was also not in operation.
The food was at best tepid, we first complained to the restaurant manager who I asked if he would taste the soup - he said "it's not too cold" we then complained to the rather arrogant hotel manager pointing out that the lids were being left open and to be fair after that a member of staff tried to keep the lids closed but we really got the cold shoulder as well as the food still not being warm. They did however put a microwave next to soup at lunchtime just wish they would have left it there all the time. We actually went out to eat a couple of times over the week just to have something hot to eat. The only show cooking we saw was a young man in chef's clothes flambeing pineapple ?? why not sure.
While we were there although the hotel can hold over 500 guests there were only 50 staying that week so maybe that is why everything seemed to be gearing up to close for the season - I do think guests should be made aware before booking. Even so next June it will be the Kyknos Beach again for us.

Room Tip: Sea view but more expensive and you will not get one without paying.

We really like this hotel. We are definitely going to return. This is a 5* hotel!! I was worried reading the reviews but don't be put off. We are in October so obviously everywhere is deserted and lacking entertainment but the local bar near the hotel called the red lion is always fun with good atmosphere. The food in the hotel is slightly boring and probably could do with more English availability. There are a lot of German and french people staying at this time aswel so maybe they cater more for them. We are having a great time here. It's a little bit cold sometimes when the clouds are out and the sun hidden. But it's still a nice area and the hotel is defo worth the money. Although I probably wouldn't stay all inclusive next time because the selection of food isn't good here. But I love the place and it's on the beach so perfect for us. The staff are very helpful and kind. Especially George in the all inclusive bar he's very funny. Great guy! We will be returning in September next year to stay!

We booked this short break in Crete for the week 14/10 - 21 10/14. We arrived during the afternoon and we met by a porter who helped us with our luggage into the hotel and to the reception area. We were greeted by a very pleasant lady, Nandia, who checked us in and explained the whereabouts of the facilities in the hotel. We were then shown to our room by the porter. Our room was on the top floor with a great view overlooking the 'infinity' pool and sea. The room was clean and comfortable. Bed linen and towels were changed daily. The only thing not provided was flannels.Plenty of hanging space.
The food was plentiful and there was a lot of variety. For those who moaned about the food not being hot were they the same ones that left the heated containers open having taken what they wanted?? The pool and private beach area was kept clean. Plenty of sun beds at all times. The drinks were all of the local variety but if you wanted well known brands then a surcharge applied.
The hotel is located in the centre of Stalis and in both directions on the coast road there were plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and souvenir stalls.
We found that the staff were at all times friendly and helpful, from the pool man right through to bar and waiting staff and the those cleaning the rooms.
In particular I would again mention Nandia because she helped us with so much during our stay - what a diamond !! In all, we had a very restful, lovely time spent in Aktia and got what we wanted and paid for.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony overlooking the pool/sea in the main part of the hotel

The hotel is not a 5 stars hotel even in Greek standards and the service and food are at most at the level of a 2-3 stars hotel. The coffee at breakfast was bad and there was no real hot drink selection, the lunch was very poor and dinner was of low quality as well. The food in the all inclusive option was of very basic quality almost and with minimal variety. There was no children menu (Shame on them!!!). The service was usually poor and it seems the staff lacked motivation and were demoralized (my guess is that they were underpaid and ill-treated by the management). The "free" Wi-Fi hardly worked and the staff "blamed" the provider. There is no real reception desk or concierge service – just a bad tempered lady seating by an office-type desk.
The rooms were just ok and the only article they provided in the bathroom was a cheap body soap and many rooms have only a shower. NO shampoo, conditioner, body lotion or shower caps were available – just appalling!!!
It seems that the owner/hotel manager does not care whether the guests enjoy their stay in the hotel and only very minimal effort was put into making the stay a good experience – the hotel actually functions as a very "cheap" tourist trap! We paid for a 5 stars vacation and got a measurable 2 stars hotel. I strongly advice against booking this hotel it's a fake all inclusive 5 stars hotel and you will have to eat elsewhere if you want to enjoy decent food for you and your kids.
Two other all inclusive 5 stars hotel located nearby in Stalis that we visited were really 5 stars hotels. They were operating at a much higher standard: the staff was polite and motivated; the food was much much better with a larger variety; and they really seem to try and make the guests enjoy their stay. This realization made us even sorrier that we chose this tourist trap hotel. Yet, Crete was beautiful as always – just don't choose this hotel as there are much better options in the region so you could get the most out of your precious vacation and money.

Room Tip: Stay away from this hotel !!!

Having just returned from a seven night stay we can honestly say that the hotel is fine. The Aktia is modern and very clean but perhaps a little characterless and impersonal. Positives are position on the beach, nice pool areas, sea view rooms and central location in Stallis. Negatives are lack of personality, confusing public areas (no signage or hotel details anywhere - not even in rooms), no service around pool areas, so you have to fetch you own drinks in plastic cups, which then tend to get blown around. We were all inclusive and yes the food was always lukewarm and not particularly appetising for a supposedly 5 star hotel but you could always find something especially at the soup or salad bars. Generally speaking, the food, wine and beer served within the hotel was very poor compared to the choices availabe outside and in the vicinity of the hotel. Previous reviewers seem to like or dislike the Aktia and I can understand why as all the differing positives and negatives do in fact exist. Depending on current clientele, hotel workload and staff 'mood' I am sure things could soon become disjointed especially at busy periods. However, if you abandon the all inclusive idea and just want to stay in a centrally located 3/4 star hotel in Stallis ideal for the beach and local restaurants the Aktia will be fine.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are obviously worthwhile but the hotel beds are extremely hard and there is a mirror...
