“What a fantastic hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2010

Due to problems at our original apartment elsewhere in Malia, we only booked our stay at the Matheo once we arrived in Crete. What a find it turned out to be. We were shown the property before deciding whether to stay, but as soon as we saw the setting, and better still, the apartment in which we would be staying, we could not say "yes" quickly enough. Some new apartments were built in the hotel grounds within the last year or two and we were even more fortunate to be staying in one of those. The rooms are stylish, modern and vast - nicer than some 5* rooms. There were three private terraces (one of which is particularly large) surrounding the apartment, and so we had sun all day long and could also take in the views of the lovely grounds, with the town and then the sea further beyond. The room If you are looking for something tranquil and sophisticated, then this hotel is for you. I would suggest that it's best suited to couples, but cannot see anybody other than Chavs and whingers being unhappy here. It's situated in a perfect location, being just outside the hustle and bustle of Malia town centre, but less than a 15 minute walk into town. You're also only a five minute walk to the main road where you can get the bus to either Agios Nikolaos (recommended) or the capital, Heraklion.

The hotel is run by George and his sister Tina who could not have been more helpful and friendly. Anna is the waitress; she is permanently smiling (and makes great cocktails too). By the end of the first day, we felt like we had known them for years. My girlfriend and I are both vegetarian and special meals were prepared for us every night which were delicious and in abundance. The staff could not have tried any harder.

We cannot recommend this hotel enough (and we've stayed in enough to know the good from the bad).

The hotel Matheo is probably one of my favourite hotels in Greece. It's a family-run hotel with a good location; set back slightly in the hills, well away from the Malia strip. I would recommend for couples or friends who want a peaceful getaway in the sun.

The rooms are new and are kept very clean. Lot's of space and the air con works like a dream BUT you have to pay 5 euros a day to have the air con, which we were a little surprised about. You also have to pay a 15 euro deposit for the air con remote. At the end of our stay we had to ask a few times to get the deposit back (the late night receptionist knew nothing about it).

The pool is great, we always got a sunbed, you get table service by the pool. The food and drinks are priced very reasonably. The terrace overlooks the pool and is where you eat breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was reasonable - it's continental, you can pay extra for an english breakfast if you want it. There's a good selection of food on the dinner menu, although we felt it was slightly over-priced, compared to what you could get in the town for your money. Guests who'd paid for half board got dinner included, which always looked very good.

The hotel seems to mainly have English and Germans (German Swiss particularly) staying there. Staff speak both languages. The family that run the hotel are very hospitable. The ONE crititism my partner and I had, was the fact they never gave you a receipt at dinner, they just gave the total figure for the tab. One guest questioned this and an argument followed between the manager and guest, because they hadn't written down the bill and had no record of what the guest had ordered but were insisting he paid the bill. One evening we played on the pool table for half an hour and they tried to charge us for one hour until we corrected them that we'd definitely only been on for 30mins. Also, as I said above we also had to repeatedly ask for our deposit back for the air con remote. All these things are minor, however this hint of 'skankiness' from the hotel management, did play on our minds a bit. Because they don't write anything down, when they charge you, they seem to over-estimate rather than under-estimate!!

Saying all that, my partner and I really enjoyed our stay here and would return. Defintely would recommend to visit Old Malia, it's a 15 minute walk and has a couple of beautiful traditional Greek restaurants there.

We also read negative reviews on this hotel, but we decided to ignore the negativity and book it anyway simply because it was away from the main Malia strip and slightly up into the hills. We do like to have peace and quiet at night time with undisturbed sleep !!!!
We could not find any fault with this hotel, clean, friendly, food is great, superb pool and the staff cannot do enough for you. Service is excellent.
As for George & Tina who run this hotel, what can I say........they were the best hosts.
This is a hotel for people who want to relax and is definately not the place for those wanting clubbing and late night entertainment.

I went to the Matheo suites in August with my Mum, and we had the best time. The rooms are lovely and big, the bathroom/WC facilities are great with a lovely big shower, we had a lovely view from our balcony and both me and my mum agreed we could not pick even one fault!! I was shocked at home good it was there, especially for the money we paid!
Would love to go back again, in fact, we will most defiantly go back again!!!
IT WAS SOOO RELAXING AND PEACEFUL!!

Set back up the hill from Malia looking out over the sea. It is only about 20 mins walk to nearest beach, but worth exploring others in the area. Great beach with full facilities just past the harbour.
The hotel is clean and the staff are great. Only disappointment was the food, no fruit at all, although you can walk to the local supermarket and buy your own, we did !
The breakfast was cornflakes with one type of yoghurt, same all week,Ham and edam cheese covered in flies and toast .. if you dont mind queuing .. only one two slice toaster for all guests at the hotel !
The main course is whatever is served, no choice at all, eat or go hungry. We had poor quality mince 3 nights. Whatever food you order will cost twice as much as the very pleasant local restaurants.
If you have already booked, go and enjoy, very clean, great rooms, friendly staff, great pool , hot tub, loads of sunbeds and shade, in a great location .... but poor food !!

No music round the large pool, no towels reserving sunbeds at 7am, no children, no rowdy large groups! Just warm people and silence. Exactly what we were looking for. Spacious modern suites, furnished and cleaned every day to a high standard (except Sunday..but who should work on a Sunday?!), fridge was a nice touch as we were half board so not expected! Breakfast was continental style, evening meal, soup, salads then main meal. Speedy service and always with a smile. Far reaching views to the sea and mountains, well tended grounds Kew would be proud of, olive groves, orange trees, gentle sounds of goat bells clanging on the hillside, and charming George and his lovely staff.

If we could fault one thing, it would be our choice of resort as Malia was not for us. But luckily the hotel is far enough away from the throng to take or leave it. We left it.

Please Thomson, remove from your Freestyle brochure and give the hotel the upgrade it deserves.

Although the rooms were really nice, clean and well maintained the grounds and pool are well looked after and very clean.
Unfortunately this is where the good stuff stopped.
We have had the same problem as an earlier review.
I cannot stress enough the need to pay for drinks and meals as you have been served them "DO NOT" have them added to your room no !!! Pay for each item as you have it is my best advice.
They do not have the inclination or the ability to itemise your bill fully for you and simply expect you to take what ever they state is your bill and pay it.
The same person as mentioned in an earlier review is the one who is the most rude and arogant. Even to the point where they are discussing your business with other hotel guests.
We paid the bill as requested and plan to take this up with our tour operator, we will never return to this hotel and certainly won't recommend it to anyone.
