“Once again we loved our stay at The Matheo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

What can I say , that I haven't already said ? We love this place so much we went there again , same time of year . Weather wasn't great but didn't ruin our holiday . We arrived late on 27th May , our food was there ready for our arrival as always . Its like home from home , happy friendly and very welcoming . I will add , that the food is now a buffet , which was fantastic , something for everyone , actually this year there was more of a variety , each night there was salads and a range of Greek food . I just love it , and its all home made .
They have extended the patio area which was nice , a lot more roomy , which was good because this year was a lot busier than the previous years we have been . the only downside was we were the only English people there . I think people are put off because its Malia , well don't be , its a 10 minute walk from the strip so you arn't disturbed by the noise . My son who is 15 took his mate this year , they hired bikes and went to the strip every day for lunch , and often went down at night to watch sport on the big screen TV's , to me its 100% safe and the locals are all very friendly . This hotel is worth a try , you will be pleasantly surprised , its clean , modern , friendly and very welcoming .

We stayed at the hotel at the beginning of the busy season. The family who owns the hotel was wonderful they were always very kind and welcoming to us. They were even kind enough to leave a supper in our room the first nightbecause we missed supper and arrived quite late. There are some pros and cons to staying at this hotel.
PROS:
-definitely a great value for the price
- the rooms were very large and looked newly renovated and very clean
- the safe was a decent size so we were able to fit all of our valuables inside
- the pool was a decent size with lots of beach chairs and very clean
-our room was cleaned every day and we received new towels almost every day
- a good variety for the breakfast buffet every day
- good variety for supper
- the hotel itself was very pretty nice scenery and landscaping and a great view from up on the hill

CONS:
-we were charged for water at supper each night (unknowingly) that resulted in a hefty tab
-we were awkwardly confronted by one of the family members asking why we don't talk to her when we were always friendly to everyone
-two of our lights stopped working in the room and no working air conditioner
-the walk was longer than the advertised 15 minutes to the beach or into town
- we were eaten alive by bugs each night because the housekeeper continued to leave all the windows and patio doors open each day
- children from the family who owns the hotel were noisily running around at all times unattended

Overall we really enjoyed our stay and we believe we got what we paid for. The rooms were amazing and much nicer than you would expect in a 3 star but there were other downfalls.

Thanks to Mr. Anil Malhotra from AM International Travels, Rohini Sector 13, Delhi, India who suggested this hotel. In fact, in terms of facilities and room quality, it is a hotel but in terms of service, this is more like a family home. The lady who take care of the guests, Constantina is more like an aunt and less a manager. She took care of our minor requests, too and always met in person to talk and resolve any query or guide. We had plenty for breakfast. Remember, we went during December first week and so, the room service for breakfast was possible. Otherwise, I think they keep breakfast as buffet.
The location of the hotel on altitude and on the corner of Malia town might not appear appealing to all but once you check-in into the hotel and have a marvelous view from the patio, I think it will pacify all your quests. The hotel suites are worth every penny. We felt as if we are in an apartment minus the kitchen. The proximity to the bus stand is an added advantage if you are looking to commute from bus. The property is quite famous and the taxi driver from the airport at Heraklion knew about the hotel. With olive and orange trees around, there is a perfect blend of nature and comfort in the suites at Matheo Hotel.
I have 2 feedback. More circular multi-pin plugs should be provided in rooms for the convenience of the guests. Also, for winter season, room heating should have been provided.
Yet, all in all it is a perfect place to stay as couple in whole east of Crete, I must admit.

Room Tip: Suites facing the sea have magnificent view

We holidayed in Malia, Crete during the October half term. Firstly Malia. If you are expecting pubs, clubs and Inbetweeners out of season you will be disappointed! Malia is a real Jekyll and Hyde. In the summer months it is a place for the young and mature too. Post August, the north side of the main street becomes a ghost town. Everything and i mean everything closes. That said, south of the main street is full of local bars, shops and tavernas. The local people could not be more welcoming. Go to where you find them eating and i guarantee you won't be disappointed. Elizabeth and Stablos in the old town is one of the best. Also try Milo's, Zorbas or Totto Lotto.
Now for the Matheo. Probably the most welcoming place i have ever stayed in. We were upgraded free of charge on our arrival to a superior room with views over Malia. I have read other reviews about its location from the beach and town. The hotel is located a leisurely ten minutes from the beach and the same distance from the main street. You can get a taxi if you have problems getting about but they are not cheap.
The hotel itself has everything you need. An immaculately clean pool, jacuzzi, bar, restaurant and the most helpful and pleasant staff. George is just brilliant. He knows all the best places to visit, eat and drink. Tina, George's sister is a fantastic cook! She allowed us to road test all her creations. If you are half or full board you will not be disappointed.
I cannot say anything negative about the Matheo, its fantastic!

Room Tip: Upgrade to a superior or Jacuzzi room. Massive rooms with stunning views.

Late review, travelled aug 2011 for a week with thomson, shame thomson no longer use this hotel. Could not fault a thing. Amazing hotel, lovely grounds, gorgeous pool and amazing staff. We had a suite absolutely gorgeous! The food cooked the hotel to buy was absolutely delicious but perhaps slightly overpriced.
I enjoyed the location close to the party but far away for a decent sleep and hangover cure. I cant thank the hotel enough I loved my time here and disappointed thomson no longer use this hotel. This hotel should definitely apply for a 4star rating its far superior than 3star.

Wow what a place - wonderful hotel, best I have ever stayed in. The rooms were fantastic, lovely and clean. The owners and staff could not have been more helpful. First time I have ever known them to mingle with the holiday makers. How this hotel is rated 3 god only knows - should be 5. Plenty to eat and the most picturesque hotel I have ever stayed in. Cannot say anything negative about the Matheo. Cant comment on the fitness centre as we didnt use it.

Room Tip: Book the suite - heaven.

Arrived after midnight to a very nice welcome from the owner. We stayed in one of the two apartment blocks off to the right of the main hotel, in one of the superior rooms, ground floor. Ideal size for a couple, with a large bathroom & livingspace / bedroom with AC, fridge ,safe and cable TV. Clean and tidy with a modern feel and the bed was comfortable too . Garden's throughout the hotel area were well maintained with fruit tree's growing in some areas.
The staff at this hotel were fantastic, always helpful and pleasant, they really did make it an enjoyable stay( special thanks to Amber & Irini). We were Half board, can't complain about the food either. Swimming pool area was always clean & tidy. Free Wi-Fi was best in main hotel. 20mins walk to Malia town centre & beaches , any further then a car is recommended, the hotel use a local car hire (sterling rental) , we hired a car for 3 days to see the other parts of Crete , Would happily go back to this hotel if we decided to go back to Crete.
