“Matilda, the night manager, is a gem.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2009

We landed on Crete late because the ferry was delayed. This is the only port that didn't have car rental places and hotel agencies trying to sell rooms to those who arrived. We were stuck because we didn't realize how big Crete is and had not pre-rented a car. A lovely taxi driver named Michael took us to a car rental agency who told us there were no cars to rent anywhere on the island. What a mess. Michael then offered to take us to a decent hotel for the night. That's when we met Matilda.

She was so wonderful. She got us in our rooms, then worked tirelessly to find us a car as well as a hotel room in a resort of some kind accessible by public transportation if we couldn't get a car. Our room was basic but clean (we did find one cockroach but that can happen any where that's tropical, I guess). This hotel was fine for an overnight if you get in too late to get where you have a reservation for a longer stay.

We (2 females on their 20s) arrived to the port after taking the all night ferry from Athens. We arrived around 6AM and walked to a little building next to the deck where they had an information desk and some car rental offices, and 2 cafes. The information desk was closed and there were few people around except the people in the cafes/car rental. We picked up a couple of hotel cards (since we didnt book any hotels) and called hotel pasiphae and they had availability for 1 night for 55 Euros, breakfast included for a twin bed room.

So, we used the hotel for only 1 night, and we had to leave the next morning at 7AM to catch the next Ferry at 8:15AM to Santorini.

Positives:
-Clean room/bathroom, quiet
-Relative good location, taxi from port was 5 Euros, and we walk about 15 min to the main bus station (main bus station) that took us to the knossos castle. That bus station also had buses leaving for other parts of crete.
-Value 55 Euros, the room was decent, and clean, had a refrigerator, good A/C and balcony didnt face a noisy street.
-Service, depending who is taking care of the checkin-check out process, the lady that did our check out at 7AM was super nice and efficient and she gave us a bag of grapes to take to our ferry ride to Santorini. She also called the taxi and the taxi driver was waiting for us, and charge us 5 Euro back to the port.
-You could walk to the center of town, where they have the main shopping and dining area. You can also walk to the Venetian fort. So the location for main Heraklion is not bad. (some of the walking is down hill or up hill, is almost NEVER flat!)

Neutral-Negative:
The lady that did our check in was smoking ALL the time! UFF and that was were the breakfast area was located....we never sat to have breakfast there, so no clue about the quality of their breakfast.

*I will stay here only if I have 1-2 nights, and will stay in Heraklion, but we heard that Chania is the really beautiful place to be in Greece.

We landed in Heraklion with no plans and a 2 week stay. To get our bearings and take a day to see Knossos We desided to spend 2 nights. We got a taxi and asked to be taken to an economy hotel for 2 nights (20060508-09).
The Hotel Pasiphae is smaller hotel with a cafe/bar and parking, located on a hill above the port within walking distance of the old town. It was clean and bright with 2 single beds and a minibar. The only problem was the smell of stale cigarettes from a long time of peoples bad habits. We did not use the cafe and only had drinks once. The hotel served us well on our stop over. The posted rate is 50E per night.
Now to hire a car and explore other places.
