“Basic, clean, perfect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2008

I have just returned from a girls holiday at the Bella Elena. The apartments were basic but clean, the pool area was very nice, no fight for sunloungers. The pool bar was nothing special but happy hours are 8 - 10 which was good to start off the night. The staff struggled with english and were unintentionally rude at times but this wasnt a problem. there is a restaurant a 2 min walk from the hotel which was excellent. main meals were done to perfection and with wine and dessert it was about 13euros. there are shops and bars only 5 mins away and the strip is less than 10 minutes. We were getting 4 drinks for 5euros at most bars. There are 3 or 4 cats which walk around the apartments as if they own the place so i wouldnt go if you have a fear of cats!
I would recommend these apartments for a young group holiday but not for couples or older people.

My friend and I went to Malia in September 2004 and had a wonderful time! We were actually looking for a quiet, rural type holiday and had no idea Malia was party capital of Crete! However, we stayed in the quieter part of Malia (away from the main road down to the beach) and just went on excursions everyday all over the island.

The Bella Elena appartments were basic but great. Very clean and we had no problems. Occasionally on cloudy days there was less hot water. You could get air con if you paid (we didn't cos went in Sept) and you could hire a safe in the room for valuables. Also Sky was avail if you paid. We didn't spend much time in the pool and bar area as it was very much catered to "British abroad" - pleasant enough but we didn't go to Crete to play pool, watch football and just stay by the pool, but if that's your thing, you'll find it really good. The staff were pleasant and they show films and put on entertainment most nights. It's the other residents during party-season that may put you off (unless you love the madness!), but far less wild than if you stay nearer the beach. Also if you go in Sept it's much quieter and more suitable for couples and possibly families (tho can get noisy when people come back from the clubs at all hours)

If you're looking for the party scene but want to stay somewhere more civilised than a wild 1830s environment, then Bella Elena would suit you fine in July/August! In September when we went everything was quieter anyway.

The main beach in Malia is always packed and extremely Brit-abroad touristy.

If, like us you can get out of the area each day, then it can also provide a completely different sort of holiday - quiet, romantic, cultural etc.

You can pick up a coach from one of the main roads which will take you to lots of different places. We took a coach to the Palace of Knossos - really amazing if that's your sort of thing, and then on to Heraklion the capital and visited the museum there (really enriched by having just vistied the Palace)

Chrissi Island is a great day trip - although in July/August will be scorching - in Sept the temp was about 34c. You take a coach then a boat to the island which is totally uninhabited except for 1 taverna, then follow the paths and choose your beach. The only slight letdown was a lot of sharpish rocks just beyond the tideline but the beaches themselves were gorgeous and sandy.

Our favourite excursion was the famous Gorge walk, right over on the West in Chania (or near there I think). Not for the fainthearted, but if you're an acitve sort and, most importanty, don't have bad knees this is amazing!

Takes about 5 hours by coach to get there (leave at a deathly hour) and the walk itself is 6 hours down a absolutely stunning gorge. You need good knees to cope with walking downhill in that terrain for 6 hours. Lots of people do it in huge groups so you'll be walking with lots of other people. There are stops all the way down with wooden hut loos and halfway there a large picnic area stop with benches etc.

Advice is def take food with you and your own bottled water. There are stream outlets to drink from all the way down, but you may need a sturdy stomach!

At the end of the walk is a gorgeous beach and picuresque litlle village - quite touristy but very quaint. It can only be reached via the gorge or by sea/air - there are no roads so the beach is never busy! You then take a boat back to the coach stop and home.

Malia would be an odd choice normally for someone wanting our sort of holiday, but it is doable. But I imagine if you're looking at Malia you'll want to party so my advice is stay in what they call the "quiet" "older" area, because the accomodation is much nicer and yet you're still only a short walk from all the clubs and bars. The clubs and bars are very euro, 18-30s and wild - nothing chic here! But if you enjoy larging it, zooming round on quad bikes, hanging out with other brits and drinking 24hours a day, you'll love it!
