“Excellent service!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

My fiance and I received a very welcoming arrival to sun village. The surroundings of the hotel was extremely clean spacious and relaxing whilst still being with close proximity to town centre and nightlife! It is within very close range to some exceptional beaches which provided us with much entertainment. The hotel has a very good pool bar service and lounge area, with the staff being very accomodating. Overall we would be very happy to return for another stay!!! Very relaxing!!!!

We had difficulty deciding upon a place to stay while on Crete. We hadn't been anywhere with a "party atmosphere" yet on our trip, so we decided that Crete would be the place where we would let our hair loose. But we aren't "twnty-somethings" and we wanted to be somewhere close to the party, but far enough away from the craziness that the noise or drunkeness wouldn't be a problem for us when we were tired of it all. We also wanted a place that had an "adult" atmosphere, not a lot of screaming children (well behaved children are ok with us) and located somewhere with easy access to other options (hiking, beach, kayaking, caves, other quaint towns, etc). After a lot of research, it began to appear that we would not find such a place in the party capital of Greece - MALIA. I was beginning to give up and look at other towns, such as Khania and Elounda, when I accidentally stumbled upon a link to the Sun Village in Malia. After looking at the photos and the price, I decided this might be the perfect place - and it was!

We arrived at night and it was a bit difficult to find (Malia is an easy find, but the hotel, was a bit more difficult). We made a call to the hotel from the main road and the hotel owner's daughter came riding to our rescue on her scooter. She led us down to the hotel. The service was fantastic and friendly. The room was very large and featured "feel good" sayings painted on the walls in lovely pastel colors. We had a small kitchen area with a sink, fridge and 2 burner stove with assorted dishes and cooking utensils. I believe there was a tea kettle and I can't remember if there was a microwave or not, but we had plenty to cook with.

The front room had a TV with sattelite news and a handful of other channels. There was a couch, which folded out into a bed. There was 2 balconies, one for the bedroom and one for the front room. The one for the front room had a clothes drying rack on it, which was very nice to have. Although the hotel is only about a block from the beach, there is virtually no beach view. We could see just a small square of ocean from our balcony. But the view is still pleasant, featuring the hillside, a field (with a go-cart race facility) and the pleasant town area in front of the beach. The room was clean and spacious and we were very happy with our accomodations.

The hotel has a pool bar, with reasonable prices and there is a wild parrot (which they have named "Michael"), who visits from time to time. For some reason Michael will only approach you walking backwards, so I figure "Michael", must be in honor of "Michael Jackson" (moon walking) - the owners laughed at this thought. The pool is large and clean and it is surrounded by beautiful landscaped and colorful flowers and shrubbery. It features comfortable loungers, tables and umbrellas. You can hear music from the pool bar area, but it is not crazy loud and you hardly hear it from the room. The music stops early, so it does not interfere with sleep.

The party goes on all over the town. Basically every other door is a bar or restaurant-bar with a few small shops sprinkled in between that sell everything from basic groceries to tourist trinkets and towels. The town is full of foreign youth gone wild. Loud and drunk, riding atv's crazily through the town with little consideration for pedestrians or laws, but once you get the hang of walking around without become a victim, it is all much easier. It's a bit like the video game "frogger" - you are the frog! And the party doesn't stop - AT ALL...EVER! It goes on all day and all night. Even after the bars and clubs close (late night clubs close around 5AM), the party and craziness goes on in the streets, well into the morning light. Thankfully, the Sun Village Malia is just far enough away from it all, to not be affected negatively by the insanity. Yet it is close enough to dive in, with a 5 minute walk to the main town. The kids apparently do not care to go the extra distance which might lead them away from their alcohol and booming music. Which worked out perfectly for us.

The beach is about a 5 minute walk in the other direction and there is plenty of space and parking. We had no trouble finding plenty of room when we felt like hitting the beaches.

We drove from the hotel into the mountains where there is a Cave. said to be the birthplace of Zeus (beware, there are a lot of steps/hiking to get to the cave, but there is also a paved path that they don't advertise, because if you hike, you are more likely to want to rent a donkey for a few Euros, which will take you to the top much faster). Then we drove through the mountains past pcituresque mountain towns and crafts shops, North-East to the town of Elounda, which was very beautiful, quiet and had some of the best food we have eaten in Greece. Then we drove back to Sun Village/Malia along the main highway. It was about an hour to/from each point and makes for a great day trip. In Elounda you can also take the 3 hour "Happy Train", which will pull you around like a ride at Disneyland, though the hills to various shops, restaurants and other sites along the way. We arrived in Elounda far too late to take this tour, but I think we probably would have taken this tour if we had arrived earlier that day.

And Malia is in a great location, which leaves you with easy access to all the other important sights of the South (Knossos), West (Chania - the ancient Jewish town), Heraklion (near the airport with many museums, archaelogical sites, galleries and other attractions), etc.

We weren't sure if we were going to love the Sun Village in Malia or not. We were worried it might be too young of a crowd (we are in our early 40's, but youthful - and we like our peace and quiet as much as the party). However we found this hotel to be an ideal setting in a perfect location, equidistant to everything you could possibly want to see. It was a great price and they even offered us a significant discount if we paid in cash (we missed our flight out of Rhodes and lost a night at the hotel, so this was a very nice offer for us). The drinks were reasonably priced, there were families, but not obnoxious screaming kids. It was walking distance to the party town, the beaches and had a go-cart race next door. It is really the perfect place for the "forty-Something" crowd and above. Quiet and lovely, but just close enough to the party.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anybody who wants to stay in a party town, but not be part of the circus. Great for families or couples. A really beautiful place, with great service!

Room Tip: All the rooms are great at Sun Village!

We were three 19 year olds going to Malia for the nightlife and setting - and SunVillage was the perfect base to be at. We were relieved to find it not over-run by drunkards even though it was ideally situated 1 minute from the strip. The family who run it are so friendly and welcoming. The rooms are clean and the cleaner very diligent, as is the pool and surrounding area. I would say that the self catering equipment is very minimal, but I asked for extra pots, cooking oil etc and was given it readily. The only thing I'd have liked more about the place would be a bar which served a greater variety of food. That's a small matter anyway. Thanks Marina and Maria for a great week!

If you go to Crete to actually see nice stuff and relax, this is the hotel for you. Very Friendly Owners, always clean. Was there for 12 days and cant say one bad thing about the stay. Despite Malia being crazy party place this hotel was very quiet. So if you are not party crazy person this is exactly hotel for you for very reasonable price too. I am for sure comming next year again. Peter & Tanya.

I think this hotel is best in all Malia if you are not 16-18 years old and not looking for party hard.
The atmosphere is really lovely, staff very friendly. I really enjoyed my stay there. It's quiet and peaceful that's all what I needed.

6 friends and me stayed at Sun Village from 3-13 July this year and we were treated like idiots from the start.
We arrived at the hotel around 1am, we respected that people will be asleep nearby and was whispering to each other in conversation. Marina who works at the hotel started shouting at us to shut up before she had even said hello.
No complementary drinks on arrival, and they only let us stay in 2 rooms despite the fact we booked 3 rooms. Marinas Dad who also runs the hotel barely said a word to us through the holiday, he just glared angrily when we walked past and occasionally had a rant if he thought we were being too loud. We were charged 7euros per room per day for Air Con and 40euros for 2 safes. Even though some girls we met in the rooms next to us got safes for free.
The pool is brilliant, and the maid is very efficient and easy to speak to, also the location of the hotel is perfect, not too close to the strip so that you cant sleep but not too far away that you need a taxi. It’s around a 5minute walk to the beach and supermarkets are very close by.
Towards the end of our stay the owners started to treat us slightly better and actually mentioned writing a good review on trip adviser to us at one point, which was strange. The food is very average and there were no fitness facilities at all.
Overall Sun Village is a family hotel, and despite us being sensible respectable lads, they had it in for us from the start. If you're going on an 18-30's type holiday you should avoid Sun Village like the plague.
