“'Desire Satisfied'”

Le Couvent

Sep 19, 2007

Outstanding retreat for the jaded and discerning traveller! The warm welcome from Ali and Liz made me realise I had made the right choice.
There is an intimacy here, both in the airy and clean bedroom and in the stylish renovation of the house. Decorated in in a simple Provencal manner, but with a sense of luxury in the rich fabrics, original art works and photographs than made me feel at ease with an inspirational range of books and web available. A pleasing Mediterranean garden with shady arbours for dozing and an ample pool for zing before a short drive to Pezanas for a good lunch.

Liz and Ali are most accomodating in their advice and friendship and truly enjoy what they do. Breakfast is of a range and quality that defeated me after a few days, but Liz is on hand to satisfy desires with boiled eggs from her brown hens. Good memories and a place to return to.

Staying at Le Couvent can only be described as a most wonderful experience, which would totally satisfy even the most discerning of travellers. From the moment we stepped through the gate, full of anticipation, we were thrilled with everything, which all began with a very very warm welcome to this beautiful home, and captivating garden. The spaciousness, comfort of the beds and rooms, magnificent breakfasts, and many varied areas, inside and out, in which to sit and read, sunbathe, picnic, (tasting delicious cherry tomatoes on the vine), or ponder, all made our week, in this haven of peace and tranquillity , unbeatable. Lizzie and Ali, the delightful hostesses, have the perfect balance of warmth and friendliness without intrusion, and never tired of offering their expert advice on things to do. We explored some of the many fascinating places within easy driving distance, and then in the evening the happy "home-coming", a stroll in the vineyards, to friendly greetings from neighbours, and at dusk sipping wine under the candle-lit tree to chat over the day's adventure. Le Couvent has a very very special feel, and as we eagerly anticipate our return we recall our reluctant departure - when looking up to savour the last glimpse we captured the Madonna bathed in the glorious golden glow of the autumn dawn - one more magical moment in a heavenly week.

“a lovely surprise”

Le Couvent

Sep 14, 2007

I found this 300yr old small crumbling convent sympathetically and tastefully converted to B&B to be a perfect balance of terrifically welcoming holiday retreat, home for 11 days and charming company when needed. Our hosts, Lizzie and Ali are totally yummy and helpfulness itself. Our room was attractive, spotless and very comfortable with no irritating snags at all (unusual in my experience) and the paintings and many shelves of assorted reading greatly added to my sense of well being. With mountains and sea and interesting towns nearby, it was a particularly exquisite pleasure to sit on Mother Superiors balcony sipping aperitifs and one I think I could not tire of, before strolling to the local Cafe (not haute cuisine but who cares, there is plenty not far away) and observing the real life of unpretentious Roujan. Often the pluses are very simple like being able to make yourself a drink in the great kitchen - an unusually tranquil and pleasing place to find oneself in alone. Breakfasts here are a feast of fresh fruit and baked things and friendly conversation. The pool is beautfully clean, fresh and nicely situated at the top end of the terraced garden, that bit nearer to heaven! This is a special place spilling over with warmth, humour, grace and generosity and it is hard to imagine anyone being untouched by it. Looking forward to our return.

Roujan is the perfect place to explore French villages that go way back in time. And the old 300 year old convent is the perfect place to stay. The rooms were large and lovely. We were exhausted when we arrived and were promptly offered tea, juice or water. Our room was clean and lovely - very spacious. The B&B had a lovely pool and a garden where you could relax. There were also bicycles we could use. The breakfast was great and I confess that in the mornings there was so much laughter around the breakfast table that it was hard to pull myself away and go touring around. That had a great deal to do with the two owners.
At first I wondered how I would spend 3 days in this small town but the time just flew. I had wanted to visit Montpellier - just an hour away by car, but it didn't happen. I'll just have to visit Le Couvent again.

“After 4 visits, I can't wait to return”

Le Couvent

Sep 11, 2007

As a frequent visitor to Le Couvent, it feels like my second home - only better! Bright, comfortable rooms with a complimentary bottle of wine and handmade soaps. A large, immaculately clean non-chemical pool. Sumptuous breakfasts: endless fresh croissants, pastries, breads plus one day I counted 9 types of fresh fruit. Roujan is not for posers; to me, it's the real France: an attractive working village of under 2000 people, with a cafe-restaurant containing chatty locals, a lively bar, 2 dangerously tempting patisseries, 2 mini-markets (useful for picnics), 2 hairdressers, 2 butchers (with lovely ready-made dishes + pates, etc.), a handy tourist office, and much more. I enjoy visiting local wine domaines. It's only a short drive south to the sea or north to the rugged mountains with eagles. I've also gone off exploring the lanes on one of the Convent's bicycles. Liz and Ali are unusually welcoming hosts, and I've recommended Le Couvent to all my friends, many of whom have already been back 4 or even 5 times! I can't wait to stay there again.
