“Charming country boutique hotel - off the beaten track”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2011

The romantic in me loves this hotel although every time I stay it is alone on business. This hotel in the Czech countryside has much to endear it to travellers and although there are some improvement areas I keep on returning.

Positives -

i). Amazing building with a 1930's charm and style.

ii). Double rooms are large to very large and have real individual character but this borders on minimalist. Rooms have TV (includes some English & German channels), mini bar, settee, desk and chair, wardrobe. Larger rooms have bathrooms with baths with stand in showers and single rooms often only have showers.

iii). Breakfast is basic but adequate and at night the restuarant offers good quality food at reasonable prices based loosely on French-Italian-Czech style. However having used this hotel many times over several years the menu has never changed!

Items to be aware of -

i). The location of this hotel will not suit all as you really are in a small village (Ratbor) in the Czech countryside which gives it an isolated feel however this also has advantages should you be looking for a quiet stay. Reception is not 24hr. However the world heritage town of Kutna Hora is only 20 minutes away by taxi and Prague is about an hour by car.

ii). Communication may be an issue as not all staff speak English so don't expect complex requests to be understood.

iii). Bathrooms would serioulsy benefit from shower curtains and bath mats as often you will find your bathroom floor resembles the final scenes from Titanic if you are not so careful with where you direct your shower!

iv). If you are staying more than a few nights you could soon get bored with the basic breakfasts.

In summary - not for those who like to have distractions or cannot stand being alone. However if you are looking for something a little different, go for it, you may be surprised!

Room Tip: Double rooms are much more spacious and worth the additional cost of a single!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2011

we had booked a room for several months and when we arrived there was a wedding party
young woman at reception did not speak German or English and ask for passport and give us our key with absolutely NO explanation (not mentioning smile) another employee ran after us and told us (in English) where our room was and that we would not be allowed to eat at the restaurant as it was booked for wedding party but she could install us in the winter garden
but when we came down at 8.00 p.m. this place was already occupied by another couple and we were suggested either to eat in our room (!!!) or have a walk for one hour (!!! again)
after insisting they eventually found us a table in this very large hotel that does not miss space and a nice waiter took care of us but we still had to wait for an hour
we could get something to drink for waiting (no tomato juice) and (on insisting again) bread to eat with (apparently they had nothing else)
we were at the bottom of a stair where people from the wedding kept going up and down to get to their rooms to get changed … they looked at us surprised and it made us laugh
at 9.00 p.m. we could finally eat and it was good
there was no desert but small pieces of leftovers from the wedding
we could enjoy the fireworks from the wedding party and fortunately there was not much noise of music and dancing
at breakfast next morning we obviously had the leftovers of bread and cake of the previous day (did not cost them very much)
about the swimming pool there is (but where?) an outside one and we were told that if we wanted to enjoy it we had to wait for ½ hour for them to uncover it
fitness room consists of two fitness apparels placed in small concrete rooms with no windows in the basement, no decoration (almost scary)
one of our bathrobes was torn out at one sleeve
fridge in the room was not functioning at all
however the room was large and nice, large bathroom with a window; enjoy a bath closing your eyes from the setting sun
on leaving when we asked what they intended to do considering what we experienced the answer was "cash or card?"
we had to insist and the upset woman at reception finally suggested to ask the "Chef" but the "Chef" "was not there"
however he consented us a discount (!)
this is a great place (the architect Jan Kotera is famous), the hotel is very nice with unusual early 20th Century furniture and decoration, large, quiet in the countryside however they really have to improve if they wish to get and keep customers

I stayed at Chateau Kotera 3 nights on business. The history of the chateau is interesting, and I enjoyed the HUGE room and imagining all of the history contained within those walls. While the room was nice, it was certainly not luxury and the furniture was sparse/minimalist. Bathroom was modern, but missing a bath mat and no washcloths (I know this is an "American expectation", most Europeans use sponges for bathing). The restaurant was excellenct, had dinner there several times.

The village of Ratbor is quiet, and it did feel a little isolated at times.

If you are a history buff and enjoy a unique hotel and experience, I would certainly recommend Chateau Kotera. But if you are looking for an amenity filled luxury hotel you may want to consider somewhere else.

We arrived here after driving a bit from another town. From my first glimpse of it, I loved it. The staff were friendly and the food was great and very reasonably priced. The grounds of the hotel were very pretty.

I would say it's more for a romantic break than going out type holiday, there was not much to do in the town nearby.
