“Good but underwhelming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

Hotel Laura was very good but ultimately a bit disappointing and not the idyllic getaway we were hoping for. The owners were gracious and kind. They did our laundry for free and gave my partner tea when she felt a bit ill. But the wife at Hotel Laura was the only one there most of the day, and her limited English could not help us get where we wanted to go in and around Ella. The room was exceptional: spotlessly clean, a super comfortable bed, and a hot shower with excellent water pressure. The room's porch offers a grand view of Ella Rock, but is adjacent to a road, and one day a beggar approached and wouldn't take no for an answer. Not quite what we were looking for. The hotel was also quite buggy: a minor ant infestation in the bathroom, flies everywhere (an issue all over Ella due to the centrally-located landfill), and, worst of all, hordes of wasps at night. One night we were sitting outside the owners' house, the only place the wifi works, and had to return to our room because the wasps got a bit aggressive. A couple flew into our room as well. That said, this is a very clean and lovely place to stay but could use some improvement. Perhaps our favorite part of Hotel Laura was the 2 big dogs that greeted us with big smiles at every turn. But if we returned to Ella, we would try to do better.

Rooms are very modern and the whole place is very well designed, the views are amazing and it's easy walks to town and other places of intrest. Spend 4 nights and highly recommend. The family are great and Lalita made the best food we ate in sri lanka!

Very hospitable owners, clean, spacious and well appointed rooms. Our guide was looked after very well. Unfortunately we missed out on the Sri Lankan breakfast because the owner was away in the morning. Fruit and toast looking out down Ella Gap was more than adequate however! Ella is a fantastic, relaxed retreat in Sri Lanka and Hotel Laura is a great place from which to experience it.

The beauty of Ella and this hotel was somewhat lost on me and my friend (two girls in our twenties visiting SL for two weeks). Our train from Nana Oya to Ella was delayed by two hours, meaning we didn't arrive at the hotel until after dark and we left early the next day for Arugam Bay. However, when we arrived, we were greeted by the owner (the hotel is run by a man and his mother - the mother doesn't speak much English). He was very welcoming and brought us complementary tea.
The room and bathroom are very modern and clean. There was a very comfortable king size bed but no a/c (a very powerful free standing fan was provided which sufficed). When we arrived, there was an ant infestation in our bathroom, but the staff were very quick to deal with it and were very apologetic.
Dinner was lovely - home cooked curry and breakfast was equally as good - fresh fruit and toast. Both were served on our own little veranda overlooking the valley.
A downside of the hotel is that it is right above the train tracks and the trains in SL like to blow their horns. We were woken up at 6am by a train passing by. Other than that, we had a lovely stay at the hotel.

Small guesthouse with terrific view into Ella Gap: enjoy breakfast at your own veranda! Clean and modern rooms. Runned by a very friendly family. One of the better places we stayed during our holiday.
Only disadvantages: not always hot water (in the morning), probably heated by solar power and a bed net for Mosquitos or the giant (but harmless) beetle in our room would have been nice. Would definitely recommend this place

We went to hotel laura and had one of our best stay in sri lanka. The bilding under the owner's house is new and have only 2 rooms, both with a terrace in front of a beautiful gadren with an amazing view of the hills and water falls. The bathroom is very big and clean. The staff is simply amazing! It is a family that cares of making you enjoy your stay as much as possible. A little bit hard to find so take their phone number to call them in case of difficulty!
Adorable people!

We stayed at Hotel Laura for 3 nights. It was the perfect spot, Surange and his mother Lalita did everything to make us feel at home: fresh fruit juices, tea and cookies. Very good breakfast with great avocado's and amazing dinner. We really enjoyed helping Lalita cooking one night on the woodfire. She's the best!
They have two dogs Elmo and Pinkie which are lovely to play with!
The rooms, both old and new rooms are very clean and especially the new rooms are great and well designed.
Furthermore, it is only a 5 minute walk to town when you cross the railway.
