“Dream Cafe Review”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2012

We ate here and the staff were all coughing and serving us food. Was really off putting. Food was mediocre at best. Would avoid some better options nearby would skip this place. The tea was terrible. Which really is dismal, considering it is Ella a tea plantation area.

This hotel has new and very tastefully decorated rooms above the cafe, which were probably some of the nicest rooms we saw on our trip. We stayed in Room 103, towards the back of the guesthouse, and it had a big bed, a lovely daybed/sofa, a cupboard and a chunky coffee table. All of the furnishings looked and felt good quality. I particularly appreciated the fluffy towels! Most of the rooms have private balconies looking away from the main road as well as there being a communal balcony with tables and chairs running along the front of the guesthouse. The bathroom felt and looked very clean and new and had hot water. Our room had a mosquito net, which we used (and needed to) both nights of our stay.

The service was very polite and the staff allowed us a lot of privacy, which is what we wanted.

The food we had for dinner downstairs at the Dream Cafe was very good and we can recommend the rice and curry and the pizza. It would have been nice to have been offered the possibility of a Sri Lankan breakfast because I wasn't so keen on the western breakfast we were served, but it was fine.

The guesthouse is right on the main road through Ella, which is a great location from which to go rambling out and about, but the downside is the traffic noise from the road. It starts very early and finishes late and involves ample use of the horn. Perhaps this wouldn't bother a deep sleeper but I am not one of these lucky people. Removing the air vents from above the doors and windows would lessen the problem I am sure.

Overall a very good place to stay that would suit anyone not bothered by noise.

We loved our stay here. The staff are super friendly and the manager/owner, Sami, was very accommodating. One of the best things about this place is that rooms come with their own private lounge. Very decadent on an affordable budget. We stayed two nights and the first night stayed in one of the rooms upstairs which was one of the nicer rooms. However, the noise from the road was pretty loud throughout night (I slept through it but my husband woke continuously). Then from 8am, it was loud for both of us. We asked to change rooms and this was accommodated immediately to a much quieter room around the side of the building away from the street noise. Would definitely recommend staying here as long as you get a room out to the side (if noise bothers you). Breakfast was included in the price and was one of the best breakfasts we’ve had in Sri Lanka!

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, get the room downstairs at the side of the building.

I loved this little place. Good location considering the attractions of the area. Not many rooms - only 9 I think. A great service - The staff is all smile. If your lucky youll get to chat with the owner or see the familys lovely twin daughters. Directly on the main road so very easy to find if you come by public bus. There is a restaurant with awesome traditional breakfest - usual juice - dhal curry - coconut sambol but also little coconut crepes and string hoppers - hot drink for a very good price. The terrasse is partly hidden by flower trees. Try the herbal tea - its surprising!!

Room Tip: Very good value if you visit with 4 guests.

I have been in dozens of hotels/hostels and this place is simply gorgeous. Rooms are clean, modern, yet very simple (with coconut floors). The staff is polite and helpful. The owner, Sammy, is very friendly and has good reasons to be proud of his place. Ah, and finally, I had the best Sri Lankan breakfast ever at this place! If you you go to Ella, try this place!

Room Tip: You can choose from a variety of rooms, from a very basic one to a huge family room.

We've spent 2 weeks in Sri Lanka already and this is the best food we've had. Relaxing atmosphere, central location, spacious rooms, friendly staff and its all for a very reasonable price! We recommend it to everyone in the area.
