“King's view on pauper's budget”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014

Firstly: the views. Oh the views. There is a rooftop area here with hammocks and reclining chairs where you can gaze out at the mountains and contemplate life. It is wonderful.

Secondly: the breakfast. They make damn fine French toast and nice tea in proper teapots.

Thirdly: the rooms. They're very rustic, with a lot of light fixtures not working, the furniture quite old, and no insect screens on windows. The pillows were a bit old and the bed was far from luxurious. All that said, we slept like babies and felt great the next day.

We liked how close this was to town - an easy walk down a steep hill (which is a bit dark at night, so take a torch).

We recommend this place for the lovely service, cosy atmosphere, and out-of-this-world views.

We were very happy with our stay at Hill Top guesthouse. The view over Ella gap is splendid, especially from the roof terrace that has chairs and sun beds. The owner was particulary friendly and helpful, taking time to answer all our questions about the political situation etc. He has made a map over Ella that he gives to all the guests, and was very helpful in pointing out the sights and giving advice about what to do. He especially explained in great detail how to find the right Suwamadura ayurveda place, that is: not the fake one with same name. Time tables for buses and trains are easily available. Food extremely good. Room also good (we had room number 1)

If you want a clean, comfortable room, good food, a homely atmosphere, stunning views and an owner who checks morning and evening that everything is satisfactory but without pressure then this is for you. We thought we might stay for three nights and stayed eight. Lots of walking and a very relaxing time.

After some pretty dodgy accommodation in Haputale the night before, it was a welcome relief to arrive at Hill Top Guesthouse where we were welcomed by the lovely family. They were all so friendly and giving of their time and services to us. My friend wasn't well and they ensured she was taken care of, always checking in on her and providing us with cups of tea and some great health advice. The rooms were spotless and the breakfast delicious. The views so relaxing and breathtaking overlooking Little Adam's Peak and Ella Gap. They also recommended the Kinellan Tea Factory which was fabulous - a lot less touristy than the Lipton one. There were no tourists around so we were given a private tour where we took photographs and were able to sample and buy their tea. It was one of our highlights in Ella. Highly recommend this little gem of a guesthouse.

We tried to book this place months in advance but it was full, due to overbooking at another hotel we tried again and were very lucky since they had a no show themselves so we were able to find accommodation around new years eve.

They were very helpful and friendly, the home-cooked food was great and prices were really good for what you got. The rooms were cosy, but to set expectations are not luxurious by any means. Good wifi, amazing roof top (with sun beds!) with view over Ella Gap.

Despite the excellent view it's a only a 2-3 minute walk down to Ella Main road so having lunches, taking tuk-tuks to surroundings are very convenient. The distance from the road also reduce the sound from traffic which we appreciated :)

Really recommend this place for anyone OK with less than pristine rooms.

Room Tip: The higher rooms seem to be nicer, with direct access to the breakfast/dining area.

We got the train from kandy to Ella. We got a tuk tuk to the hilltop but you could walk it. Really good location as a 5 min walk uphill from the main street so you can't hear the noise from it . Need a torch to get home at night ! Lovely place, friendly staff and fantastic views. Xxx

The place is very nice, with great view and super friendly hosting.
They help us a lot with tips for our trip from there to Udawalawa and also around Ella.
Breakfast and dinner were delicious.
Fair prices.
