“Yeah it's good. But nothing special.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

Hi, yes, HM is a good place. Room is good enough. Roof top is nice. I hate oysters so I can't say I loved it. Barbecue is a good idea for sure, but I couldn't see barbecue anymore (had it every day for a long time). When I said "no thank you", the lady looked at me like "what kind of unsocial person is that?". Yeah sorry, I didnt like barbecue that night, am I a bad person now? Jeez...

Harold's Mansion is one of those places that knows it's the only game in town. And so is the behaviour of the staff. "Be happy that you are here and don't expect too much from us, because you save money here anyway. So shutup and take it or leave it."

Extension of the room? "Okay..." no smile.

Sorry folks, sometimes competition is good. I think if there was a second competitor, Harolds Mansion would piss their pants and start acting nice to their guests. "Please come again."

I have a big big problem with so called "Backpacker Hostels" which have this arrogant feel and they think the lack of a high price allows them to treat guests like a beggar.

Sorry, that is just my feeling and it made me a little angry, because there is no alternative in town, as far as I could see.

Those personal things aside, HM is a good place.

"Dumaguete - City of the gentle people." - good joke.

I got stuck here for almost 2 weeks! Great to dive with. Decided to do the Apo island dive trip, great value and fun DMs! Also did the twin lakes and waterfall day, with hot springs. An interesting place to pass some chilled out days on the roof top. The dorms are great, hot water and clean. Yoga on the roof, BBQ and live guitar music. Really super! Great location and you can even go to Dauin for the day on the beach from there.

The hostel itself is fine. Our double room was large, although with little space to put clothes. The bathroom was clean enough. The air con was extremely noisy however. Preferred that to the noisy street though which was on the other side.

Agree with a poster below about the smells. Really bad drain smell in our level. The roof terrace was lovely though and really good to meet people. Harold himself was friendly and helpful. Pity about the rest of the staff though. One girl in particular just seemed like she did not want to be there! She was surly and slow. Apparently it wasn't just me that noticed!

Overall though, it's got a good thing going. The BBQ nights and the oysters nights are a great idea and I can see why single travellers really like it.

We had an excellent time staying at Harolds. The rooms were comfortable, clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. Everything you'd want for backpacker accommodation actually - plus some extras...

Once a week there is a communal BBQ on the rooftop. All you need to do is cruise down to the local market (the town centre is just a 5-8 minute walk) to get yourself some meat or fish - and of course some Tanduay rum! Then sit back and chill with your fellow travellers and the staff, have a few drinks and enjoy.

Harolds also helped us to organise a day of diving on Apo Island - they have an in house dive centre just downstairs. We did 3 fantastic dives and our leader was amazing, finding and pointing out all sorts of marine life we would not have spotted on our own.

All in all we had a great time, and I would recommend anyone looking for good quality backpacker accommodation in Dumagette to look no further than Harolds.

Billiard table, huge couches, open air space. That's where you dine and hangout at Harolds Mansion. Just a few minutes walk to Silliman University along Hibbard Ave.

Free bike to tour the city. Priceless, literally!

a rare gem in philippines. everything you could imagine a backpacker inn should be...this is it. rooms are clean and cheap...400 peosos for a single room with a fan.....with a very nice bathroom with hot water. towels were provided. room sizes are very reasonable. food in their roof top restaurant was cheap and clean.

open water padi course is the cheapest in philippines. a mere 12000 peosos.
if you happen to go to dumaguete make sure you stay there as i have not found any better managed place yet in philippines.......
