We stayed during the rainy season but Paje is well located so the occasional rain storm (for the most part) blew over quickly. If in Zanzibar in April, I suggest this area and hotel strongly, the weather was dramatically better than in Stone Town. We had three of five days with perfectly clear skies, our taxi driver noted that it rained in Stone Town all five days.
Most of our days were spent sunning on the villa roof deck, by the pool at the villa or in the very relaxing beach/poolside swing lounger. The memory of reading on the swing in front of your private pool, with a clear view to a green and turquoise sea is the memory I will go to when work gets too stressful.
There are so many places to sun and so many places to cool off (private pool, hotel pool, private outdoor bath & shower and indoor rain shower and of course the Indian Ocean just a few steps away). I was almost overwhelmed with the choice of where to relax. They even have outlets near to the rooftop sun bed, which is shaded, so you can catchup on work from up there too.
Most days and nights we had breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks brought to our villa. Room service arrives very promptly. We usually made a plan, wrote it down and provided it at breakfast for the day, with drink orders and times. We did this by choice, you can call and order at your leisure too. They provide a mobile phone with the number of reception and the staff for you to use.
About thirty minutes ahead of a meal delivery, either the outdoor table or the living room table would be set with wine glasses, water, placemats, etc. and at almost exactly the specified time the order would be delivered to the table. On the occasions we ventured to the beach, our smoothies or drinks & fruit would be covered and kept cool in the fridge with a note on the table of where we could find them when we returned.
Our mini-fridge was nothing short of magic, everything I ordered would just appear in short order, and sometimes so discretely that I hadn't seen anyone deliver it. The staff caught onto our orders and there was always two diet cokes, water, fruit and beer in our fridge. When we consumed one, a new one magically appeared. It takes significant effort to create such magic and we were grateful as it really adds to the stay.
The hotel is family owned and the daughter, Natalia, is a delight and manages the fine tuning of the hotel as it is gearing up for a full opening in June. She's very thoughtful as to the design of the hotel and caring for the environment.
There are still a few snags and kinks to work out, but it didn't disrupt the service or relaxation, so I encourage you to book during the soft opening period. Our only caveat is that the bugs are a bit overpowering in the wet season and the hotel has made an effort to blend with nature, so you will get a few mosquito bites until the balance is fully worked out. But it's a beach, a few bites are par for the course, just bring DEET.
The GM, the FB & rooms director, Priska, and the staff are wonderful. They all speak excellent English, even the cleaning crew speaks at least functional English and everyone is more than happy to help with any ask. They were warm, friendly people and they made the stay that much better. The service alone is worthy of an excellent rating, the location, architecture and focus on relaxation which when into the design push this hotel over the top.
I must add one other tid bit. While there, we met the sweetest kitten, who seemed very domesticated but without a home, more of a stray than a feral cat. We took her in during our stay and were heartbroken to leave her. I looked into adoption but the visa process to the UK was too difficult. She is as sweet and innocent as can be and I ask that should you come across her during your stay that you give her a snack and a pet. I don't normally pet stray cats and am not really a cat person, but she was so innocent and friendly. Having her around really made our experience that much better, so we welcomed here whenever she came to the villa. Please look out for her (and any others). She's clean, kind and as friendly and welcoming as the hotel and the family and staff that run it. If you are around villas 4 or 5, you may see her and I will post a photo too.
You'll love it now and if you stay once the last touches are fixed, you'll enjoy it even more (if that's possible). Enjoy! And please look out for the sweet kitten and the wonderful staff (Natalia, Priska, and the others who are all warm, thoughtful and very interesting & knowledgable to speak with).
On the whole, we highly recommend this hotel.
