“Beautiful views, lovely staff, almost too many places to relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2014

We stayed during the rainy season but Paje is well located so the occasional rain storm (for the most part) blew over quickly. If in Zanzibar in April, I suggest this area and hotel strongly, the weather was dramatically better than in Stone Town. We had three of five days with perfectly clear skies, our taxi driver noted that it rained in Stone Town all five days.

Most of our days were spent sunning on the villa roof deck, by the pool at the villa or in the very relaxing beach/poolside swing lounger. The memory of reading on the swing in front of your private pool, with a clear view to a green and turquoise sea is the memory I will go to when work gets too stressful.

There are so many places to sun and so many places to cool off (private pool, hotel pool, private outdoor bath & shower and indoor rain shower and of course the Indian Ocean just a few steps away). I was almost overwhelmed with the choice of where to relax. They even have outlets near to the rooftop sun bed, which is shaded, so you can catchup on work from up there too.

Most days and nights we had breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks brought to our villa. Room service arrives very promptly. We usually made a plan, wrote it down and provided it at breakfast for the day, with drink orders and times. We did this by choice, you can call and order at your leisure too. They provide a mobile phone with the number of reception and the staff for you to use.

About thirty minutes ahead of a meal delivery, either the outdoor table or the living room table would be set with wine glasses, water, placemats, etc. and at almost exactly the specified time the order would be delivered to the table. On the occasions we ventured to the beach, our smoothies or drinks & fruit would be covered and kept cool in the fridge with a note on the table of where we could find them when we returned.

Our mini-fridge was nothing short of magic, everything I ordered would just appear in short order, and sometimes so discretely that I hadn't seen anyone deliver it. The staff caught onto our orders and there was always two diet cokes, water, fruit and beer in our fridge. When we consumed one, a new one magically appeared. It takes significant effort to create such magic and we were grateful as it really adds to the stay.

The hotel is family owned and the daughter, Natalia, is a delight and manages the fine tuning of the hotel as it is gearing up for a full opening in June. She's very thoughtful as to the design of the hotel and caring for the environment.

There are still a few snags and kinks to work out, but it didn't disrupt the service or relaxation, so I encourage you to book during the soft opening period. Our only caveat is that the bugs are a bit overpowering in the wet season and the hotel has made an effort to blend with nature, so you will get a few mosquito bites until the balance is fully worked out. But it's a beach, a few bites are par for the course, just bring DEET.

The GM, the FB & rooms director, Priska, and the staff are wonderful. They all speak excellent English, even the cleaning crew speaks at least functional English and everyone is more than happy to help with any ask. They were warm, friendly people and they made the stay that much better. The service alone is worthy of an excellent rating, the location, architecture and focus on relaxation which when into the design push this hotel over the top.

I must add one other tid bit. While there, we met the sweetest kitten, who seemed very domesticated but without a home, more of a stray than a feral cat. We took her in during our stay and were heartbroken to leave her. I looked into adoption but the visa process to the UK was too difficult. She is as sweet and innocent as can be and I ask that should you come across her during your stay that you give her a snack and a pet. I don't normally pet stray cats and am not really a cat person, but she was so innocent and friendly. Having her around really made our experience that much better, so we welcomed here whenever she came to the villa. Please look out for her (and any others). She's clean, kind and as friendly and welcoming as the hotel and the family and staff that run it. If you are around villas 4 or 5, you may see her and I will post a photo too.

You'll love it now and if you stay once the last touches are fixed, you'll enjoy it even more (if that's possible). Enjoy! And please look out for the sweet kitten and the wonderful staff (Natalia, Priska, and the others who are all warm, thoughtful and very interesting & knowledgable to speak with).

On the whole, we highly recommend this hotel.

Seldom does reality significantly exceed the expectations sparked by a resort website or brochure. Well, White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa is certainly one of these very few places. We have stayed at lots of fancy places around the globe (Grenadines, St Barth, St Marteen, Thailand, Mauritius, Lombok, Maldives, Corsica etc…) but this Boutique Hotel definitely rides at the very very top.
Set on an endless white sand (hence the name ) beach on the South East of Zanzibar Island, the resort is nested in a beautiful lagoon, heaven to kite surfers. This place is truly unique and the beach so huge it feels like the place is all yours. We stayed there with our two teenage kids for a week on the beach front villas. Frankly an exhilarating experience. The view of the lagoon is just breathtaking (try it from the private pool that every villa is blessed with), the colors changing all the time with the tide's ebb and flow. At low tide you can almost walk one mile to the reef or choose to sit in shallow water and watch the local fishermen netting around.
The rooms, the villas rather, are simply perfect, secluded in their own tropical garden. The architects have obviously been very careful at maintaining as many trees as they could so that it feels like the villas have been built around the existing vegetation. The living room is separated from the bedroom in a two-small-villa setting which is something we had never experienced before. On the flat roof of the bedroom you can enjoy a stunning view of the lagoon in a huge sun bed. Rooms are decorated with style and taste, everything has been designed and hand-made (tables, chairs, beds, bedside tables….) by the resort carpenters who maintain a workshop across the road.
Food (the vegetables are grown in the resort garden) was great (and that comes from a French guy) to the extent we never really ventured outside. This is the problem with this resort…. it feels so good you just do not want to leave it.
Last but not least, the service was impeccable. Staff (local and from Tanzania or Kenya) are extremely friendly, they all spoke English pretty well and some even a bit of French which was nice.
If you like Kite Surf, Pajé is the place. The hotel maintains a well-stocked Kite Center which also has Paddle boards and windsurf equipment. For the divers there are two diving facilities within 15mn walk (or take a cab). We took a couple of dives in the lagoon which were quite nice. The hotel offers lots of other outings and visits but we were glued to the hotel all the time. We will come back this is certain, for a longer period so that we can visit other places of the Island and visit Stonetown which allegedly is worth seeing… that is if we manage to extract ourselves from the resort which will prove a challenge….

Room Tip: All plugs are Continental European (ie not UK style)

We've stayed there for a week with friends, and it's been truly an unforgettable experience. The villa we stayed at was a luxury beyond borders - huge space with private pool, rooftop bed with a sea view, own butler, and lots of lots of space. Everything looked and felt so natural and ecological - everything is made form wood and stone, and smells amazing! I loved loved loved it, and wanna come back!!!

My only complaint is that I was alone! I was on business and had two nights to myself here at White Sands. I was in Villa 1, facing the breathtaking Indian ocean. The villa consists of two large buildings (lounge/dinning and bedroom/bath), a private pool, rainforest shower & bath, and access to the beach. I really enjoyed watching the color of the ocean change from pale baby blue to emerald green as the rain storm cleared up to a bright, beautiful day.

I also appreciated all natural material - wood furniture, thatched roof, colors that blend in. Resort is eco-friendly - they use solar power and built around trees.

Service excellent and all staff really friendly and welcoming. The true opening is in June, so for now there is a lot of construction work and some buildings are not open (inc. spa).

We've been staying in the villa with friends and that was an unforgettable experiences. Villas are super spacious and the territory is amazing. There are plants and flowers all around the cosy private yard. Interior is great, all furniture is the best quality and looks amazing in surrounding of natural clay and wood. Stuff is exceptionally helpful and friendly and food (that is served either in your living room or outdoors) is tasty and diverse. Place is also super secure so you can leave without closing the door and nothing happens.
Indian ocean is just few steps away and is particularly amazing during low times. So get ready for long walks and do not forget 50+ SPF.
That is perfect place to leave about all worries behind and on warm tropical nights enjoy bright stars overhead with a glass of pina colada.

Stayed at the hotel with friends for 7 nights, it's an amazing place with beautiful views, the villa was huge and so comfortable, There's no need to leave the hotel, since everything is available in the hotel area, however if you want to see some other views, the beach offers various landscapes - you just need to walk 15-20 minutes along the sea. The staff was very helpful and the food at the hotel is the best (we've tried loads of different places, but the food at the hotel was most exquisite). Hotel offers also loads of different water / tourist activities (kite surfing, paddle boating), so you won't get bored.

Room Tip: We stayed in a villa with personal entrance to the beach, so would definitely recommend the front vi...

I have stayed six nights from 2/3/14 occupying two one-bedroom villas with my family. Our stay had exceed all our expectations. As the resort is not ready yet (expected Jun of 2014) and the restaurant, bar and spa are not working, we had all our meals and drinks in room. The villas are huge. They have more than 1000 sqm garden, pool and two different building one for bedroom and one for living room. Also there are two huge outside resting beds (one swing-bed near the beach and one on top of the bedroom roof. So you do not want to leave the villa to go anywhere else. There are also two different dining tables ( inside and outside). Although the hotel is new and unfinished, the staff has done everything to please us and provide us asap. Everybody was with a big smile and a friendly face. Housekeeping was also excellent and helpful with all our requests. We used room service and all the food and cocktails were great. We had complimentary extra fruits and juices everyday. I wished we had bigger choice but I understand that their restaurant is not fully functioned.
The setting of the villa and the magnificent in front beach of Paje was my ideal holiday

Room Tip: The front on the beach one bedroom villas are definitively and unforgettable choice.
