“Absolutely Terrific”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

We went to the Palms in Zanzibar as a last minute thing and didn't know what to expect. It proved to be absolutely terrific. It's intimate with just a few villas but the service and food is extraordinary. It's affiliated with the hotels on both sides so there are extra activities but it's really ideal for rest and relaxation. We highly recommend it on all fronts, particularly from a service and support perspective.

We stayed in The Palms in Zanzibar for 8 nights from 7th June until 15th June 2013 for our honeymoon. It was the most memorable holiday experience we have ever had! From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were treated like a king and queen. Nothing was overlooked, the attention to detail was incredible.

Siriac, the manager, greeted us on arrival, gave us a freshly made cocktail and gave us an overview of the resort and what to expect. I have to say every hotel should have a manager like Siriac in their business – my wife coined it best by saying ‘they should send hotel managers from around the world here so that Siriac can show them how it is supposed to done’. Siriac has this strange knack of being everywhere but was never intrusive. He is friendly and has a great way with dealing with his guests. We have never ever experienced this level of service anywhere else (and we have travelled extensively)!

Siriac’s impeccable level of service was reflected in every single staff member we met. The wait staff were unfailingly friendly, helpful and made you feel as if you were home.

The place itself is the stuff of dreams – there are only 6 villas all of which are within 15 metres from the pristine beach. We were only supposed to be staying in the Palms for 3 nights and were then meant to move to Baraza (sister resort next door) for the remaining 5 nights but in short we simply couldn’t move from The Palms because it was just at a completely different level to anywhere else. The place is so small that it felt like home and we got to know each staff member really well. Luckily we were able to rearrange and stay on there for the full 8 nights – best decision we ever made!

The FOOD is unbelievable - it is as close to Michelin star quality that you can get (and we’ve eaten in many Michelin restaurants). The chef, William clearly has a talent which he has developed over many years. The seafood was the best we have ever eaten; it was freshly caught each day from fishermen operating just a couple hundred metres down the beach. We ate fresh lobster at some point every day – it was simply delicious. We looked forward to every meal as it was always exciting, inventive and unforgettable. Chef William also put on a cooking demonstration one lunch time which was really interesting. He is so friendly and, when I said I was a keen cook and jokingly said I’d love some of his recipes, he obliged! At dinner that night, Siriac handed us some printed off recipes for one or two of our favourite sauces and dishes.

Each evening beautiful complimentary sun-downers were delivered to our villa – a different tropical cocktail and accompanying appetizer each day. This, we decided, was a life we could get used to! Even now, a couple of months later, we often turn to one another in the evening and say ‘I wonder what tonight’s sun-downer will be!’ Ah, the memory of it!

Our villa (Cinnamon) was beautiful, everything that you could need and more – plunge pool, bar, complementary bubbly on arrival, double bathroom and so on. One of the best aspects of our stay was the fact that each villa had a dedicated beach-hut with double-bed (perfect if you wanted a break from the sun) and sun loungers – all within 10 metres of the beach and with no buildings to block the incredible view. No more getting up early to put your beach towels in order to claim the sun loungers for the day!

Every morning after we went to lie down on our sun loungers, within a few minutes, as if by magic, a member of staff would appear with ice cold bottles of water and cool face towels…a little while later, we would be offered freshly made fruit juice (such as fresh coconut juice served right from the shell!)

I know this review is far too long, but even this fails to capture how incredible our time at The Palms was. We’ve stayed in many 4 or 5 star hotels, but The Palms was a place like no other. We hope we will return some day for an anniversary trip – thank you again to Siriac and all his team who made our honeymoon the experience of a lifetime. We will never forget our chats with you or your kindness.

Room Tip: All the villas are good.

This is simply the PERFECT place to a honeymoon. Ours was just amazing not only because of the quietness and privateness of the hotel, but because of all the staff who work there. They'll do everything to make you feel comfortable and welcome. As the locals would say: "Hakuna matata" -There's no problem! For all the attention and care we can't thank them enough, from the Manager Valeria, to the F&B Manager Siryak to Chef William managing a rich, exquisite cuisine. What an amazing white sandy beach in front of the hotel!

Room Tip: All the 6 Villas of this hotel are equal and unique, decorated with traditional swahili furniture.

We stayed for 5 nights at The Palms....a magnificent beach side resort on Zanzibar...and were exceptionally pleased at the understated yet elegant beauty found here. The resort hosted about six rooms only...each free standing "room" was really a two room suite, completely separate units sprinkled about on a small but beautifully landscaped property. The food was exceptionally gourmet-- the service perfectly attentive without the usual stuffiness that sometimes comes with properties this upscale. Our only complaint was the TV/DVD player...very low quality equipment with significant sound/speaker issues. When we selected this property...we read all the Tripadvisor ratings and noticed issues with TV equipment reported...but since that report was awhile back we assumed it had been attended to appropriately. No luck. With daily rates this steep....one expected higher quality TV...but since we were in paradise--at any rate, the TV watching was minimal at best. We noticed how the staff really paid attention to our wants/needs....very good at anticipating customer wants/needs. One example was....we were on our honeymoon.....and the last night of our stay we went off to the delightfully romantic open air restaurant for dinner on a veranda overlooking the Super Moon that evening....a 5 piece live Arabic band playing exotic melodies....only to return to our room that night to a surprisingly romantically candle lit bathroom...bathtub filled with scented oils....and champagne on ice waiting for us. Flower blossoms floating in the water. It was beautiful and completely a surprise for us. This property is exceptionally well managed, friendly and helpful. The staff trained in customer service to a tee. We would return here at a moment's notice. Perfect honeymoon locale.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room called Jasmine....but if you are looking for even more privacy....try Cinnamon...

A spectacular place to visit that certainly leaves you with an experience and memory worth treasuring for a lifetime. We were two couples who had an amazing 4 days period of relaxation at The Palms after our adventurous safaris. It is an amazing peaceful place located on the south eastern coast of the beautiful island that has everything one can wish for and that leaves you in a magical state of mind. Our spacious villas ( two among the total 6 private villas in the resort) were beautifully designed in an elegant manner that offers all the luxurious comforts and facilities one can ask for that get topped by a private outdoor pool and a bed to enjoy the long views of the Indian ocean. Apart from the incredible surroundings and offerings, we were absolutely amazed by the level of hospiltality and quality of service /attention provided by the staff at all levels. The manager on ground 'Siriak' is highly complimented for his service , his remarkable attention to details and his continuous availability at all times to ensure our relaxation throughout the stay. Other staff are equally thanked for their attentiveness at all times to make sure we were pampered ( Robert, Vuai, Kibalabala , Fatuma). A special and worthy compliment is highly extended to the chef 'William' and his team who continuously served exotic and unique dishes that left us with a wonderful dining experience which took place on continuously changing venues and locations that were created daily by the staff with a maximum level of caring and attentiveness. We also had the pleasure of visiting the two wonderful neighboring sister resorts and experiencing their facilities, wide variety of activities and generous selection of offerings. The spa is another beautiful setting where we enjoyed a marvelous treatment that left us in a relaxed, stress- free and floating spirit - it was an amazing therapy.
This is definitely not our last visit to The Palms in the beautiful island of Zanzibar- we highly recommend this ultimate getaway which is in fact as described and to the highest extent indeed 'a sanctuary for those in search of tranquility ....a place to stimulate the senses'.

We loved our few days at The Palms this June post-safari. Located on the beautiful Indian Ocean, it had everything we wanted - spacious villa, private beach banda overlooking the fabulous white coral sand beach (perfect for long walks), gourmet food and, above all, a super-friendly staff that spoilt us rotten. A great place for R&R, with a refined colonial club feel, meticulous maintenance and every convenience. Lots of ocean activities are available for the adventurous - the resort provides water shoes for exploring the ocean floor on foot at low tide, Free access to the two sister resorts on either side was a bonus.
