“Bellevue feels like home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

I have stayed in Bellevue Guesthouse last february (I forgot to post my review, sorry!). From the moment I arrived, I felt at home. The welcoming and beautiful decorated restaurant is a great and comfortable place to sit and read a book or use the wifi. You also get easy in touch with other travellers and before you know you share a big table at night having dinner together.

The rooms in Bellevue are spacious and all you see inside is made on Zanzibar, what a great thing to do. I am sure local crafts people are happy with the work they can do for Bellevue.
Food in Bellevue is great both fish and meat. Together with a cold beer every evening is a small party!

Trips around Zanzibar are quickly arranged by the employees of Bellevue. There is lots to do! Snorkling, visiting a spicegarden, going to Stonetown and so on. My best trip was the walk around the beach and in the sea, where local women are harvesting seaweet and working with coconuts. Part of the money for the excursion goes directly to the women.

Cycling on the beach was great to do and having a look at the kitecentre the belongs to Bellevue owner Dim as well. I am not a kitesurfer, but I met many people having a great time at the kitecentre and on the water.

I stayed 2 weeks at Bellevue Zanzibar and I enjoyed every minute of it. Melanie and Dim created a small paradise where you easily feel at home, they are doing a GREAT job together with all other staff.

Bye!
Debby

Our daughter and partner found this little paradise in January 2012. Time to check ourselves.

Though we don't kite surf, we experienced a lot of other possibilities to spend the day (5). Best place to relax and feel at ease. With good food for new energy, everyday a fresh, tasty, creative menu based on local ingredients provided by local staff guided by Dutch managers. Aim of this guest house as we experienced it: to please all guests in all possible ways, find solutions if there are 'knots', offer jobs to and develop the Zanzibari staff (15 pax) and let people of Bwejuu and the environment share in whatever profit.

The beach is nearby (after a 100 metres stroll around a posh villa). Things we found on the beach were: seaweed, couple of men on bikes (beach is wide and part of it used as bicycle track for local people to transport there goods), small wooden boats, fishermen, women looking for food (sea shells), children playing and 5-6 locally made beds for Bellevue to relax even more.

We used local taxis up and down to a.o. Jozani Natural Park, several villages and historic places on the east side of Zanzibar. All well and quickly arranged by Bellevue. Even if we only suggested a tour to X might be a good idea, the driver was arranged. Also after we expressed our interest in ordinary local life a nice tour into Bwejuu village was arranged for next day including a visit to a tiny little hospital/pharmacy and a primary school where we were offered the chance to teach the children some Dutch :-). Even if you're that relaxed you don't know what to do Melanie c.s. come up with ideas,

Our jungle room was great as was the bed, always a nice breeze during the night (September), no ants, no zzzzzzz malaria bearers, and most important: clean! Flowers on the bed to welcome us, a super shower. Rooms and outdoors received fresh paint and proper maintenance for the season to come.

One is not disconnected from the world: wifi is available all day for a little extra money. So don't be afraid you'll miss political developments in your home country or don't know what's going on in the world - far far away :-).

Nothing is cheap on Zanzibar, this place neither, but one gets rewarded! Thanks Bellevue and staff. We totally enjoyed it. Good luck and good business to you all and hope to come again, insjallah! Gerard & Ineke.

Room Tip: If you like the sound of the waves, like to feel the breeze during the night, to hear the birds and...

After two weeks of safari and climbing a mountain, we enjoyed 8 days in the idyllic guest house bellevue. The sea view and the design of the rooms is beautiful and the staff very helpfull and nice. Normally we never stay longer than a few days at 1 location, but once arrived in bellevue we wish that we could stay forever.

The food is a delicious mix of local and international dishes, always fresh and for a good price.

In bellevue, you never get bored, learn to kite surf, rent a scooter and explore the island, try stand up paddling to the sunset , swim with dolphins, go on delightful water excursions, see brilliantly colored fish with snorkelling and diving, enjoy a day stone tonw and so on..
The staff knows exactly how they can help make your holiday as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Beside, the Dutch management is very durable and sincere for their employees and the environment. All products and services are purchased locally and the employees receive beside salary all medical expenses and meals. For us one more reason to feel good about this most beautiful guesthouse in the world!

We (2 adults + 2 children 8&15) spent four nights at Bellevue to experience the eastern Zanzibar before finalising our holiday at a resort on the west coast. It was the ideal base for day trips North to the Blue lagoon (snorkelling) or South to the kiting place for swimming, relaxing in the sun and good pizzas for lunch (and use of the swimming pool for free). We certainly enjoyed the breakfasts (especially the pancakes) and the excellent diners in a really relaxing atmosphere. The tasteful interior really makes this something different compared with other guest houses in this price range.

I'm an avid kitesurfer, looking for a holiday where I can relax and do sports. At the same time I value great food (ímportant if you do a lot of sports :-)) and service. I'm not someone looking for the most luxurious of places to stay, but somewhere comfortable and in tune with the country I'm in. Bellevue came through with flying colours. Food and service very good. Every day different choices of dishes. All dishes are simple, but well put together. Concidering the country you are in, quite an accomplishement. The service is top notch. The owners and management are personally involved with the enjoyment of your holiday and will help you out with suggestions and offerings. I truly felt to be at home, away from home. Don't expect a Hilton breakfast, but just a simple choice of foods. Yogert, fruits, pancackes, or eggs (in any away you can imagine!). Simple but effective. If you would like more breakfast, just order some more. It will be charged, but less then a cup of coffee in any major city.

Bellevue is well taken care of. The garden is lucius and super green. Rooms are simple, but effective. If you spend a little more, your room and shower will be more spacious and luxurious. All with the African mindset. Don't expect a Hilton prefab luxury, but expect a tastefull well cared for room in an African style. It will give you a scence of Africa, while being in your room, without having to step outside.

Bellevue will give you a wide selection of trips and excursions.
Wifi is available and fast (browsing and emailing, no Youtube as internet is still very expensive in these regions).

The kitecentre is just a 10 minute drive upwind. Therefore everyday you can end you day with a great downwinder, back to Bellevue.. or do one in the morning and have breakfast, do one at lunchtime and have lund and do one at the end of your day… :-)

cheers,
Reinoud

Just a 100 mtr from the beach we found this hidden paradise on a rock. First we stayed at the honeymoon suite and later in a luxury bungalow, both really beautiful local style decorated and with an amazing view at the sea! In the green garden are many places to relax, hang mugs, beach beds etc.

A nice an peaceful place with great food. The breakfast is simple but good (eggs, pancakes or yogurt with fresh juice and coffee (high quality tanzanian) or tea. The lunch and diner are brilliant; fresh fish, lobster, prawn, curries, meat and lovely salads and please try the brownie :-)
All for Zanzibar standards really affordable. It's an expensive island, but here the prices for food and drinks are ok.

The staff really makes you feel welcome, maybe not 100% up to western standards, but they give a really warm and personal feeling. The restaurant and lounge area is also local style and gives you a nice ambiance to completely chill out on your holiday.

Some people complain about the white villa, it is there, but well hidden behind trees. And yes there is a short walk to the beach, but there are 5 beach beds and you can ask the staff for mattresses. Maybe it is a pre that bellevue is not on the beach, the view is better, there shelter for the heavy wind and on the beach this Guesthouse would be more expensive :-)

To summarize; if you look for a small (9 rooms)personal and nice decorated guesthouse, away from the big resorts this could be the place for you. The lovely food completes the package!!

If you like kitesurfing, the owners also own the first kite school on Zanzibar. They arrange free every day transport to the kitecenter in Paje and the downwinders from Paje to Bellevue are Briljant!!!

Room Tip: Standard rooms have everything you need, but luxury rooms give extra comfort and space and if you ca...

We stayed at the Bellevue in October 2011 for 7 nights. The place is certainly a hide-away and very clean. Food is very good, but as the menu doesn`t change very often, it's getting boring after a while. I can certainly share the criticism about the breakfast; it felt like being on an army hike with food rations! The room prices would certainly allow portions, that also satisfy fully grown men! The place is very remote - you can't walk to any other restaurant in the evening and during the day you have to relay on transportation, which is very expensive on Zanzibar. the standard rooms are not very nice but clean and mattresses are comfortable. The bungalow next to the common area/ restaurant is very noisy in the morning; if you would like to sleep longer that 6.00, chose another room. The Jungle room was, for our taste, a bit to creepy crawly; the honeymoon suite looked fantastic, even though we never slept there. The "Bellevue" is unfortunately spoiled by a huge private villa which has been build right in front of the hotel's property. The beach is (for Zanzibar!) not very nice; there are two very old and nasty beach-beds; thats it. We stayed at a couple of small places during our time at Zanzibar, some nice, some not... Bellevue is something in the middle... the concept is somehow not quite convincing. If you enjoy a young, loud surfer-crowd (coming in in the evenings), don't mind paying extra for every tiny little service and planned on not moving far from the hotel anyway - this is your place.

Room Tip: Rooms not located next to the restaurant are quieter; Jungle-Room only for animal-lovers

Hello,

I wonder when you stayed in Bellevue? I hope you can contact me about this, because there was a period that I was in Holland to give birth to my son! Apparently you are so unsatisfied with us that you decide to update your review every time. The pictures of the bathroom was when we had a burst pipe in the bathroom and short after these bathrooms were renewed. We try to do our very best and each and every time we have a bad review we like to let you know that this is never what we are aiming for! I also don't know if you told us when you stayed with us but definitely

Please contact me cause I am happy to refund your stay in Bellevue!!

Kind regards
Melanie Steggink
