“Fantastic relaxing hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for 6 nights after a 10 day safari - it was the perfect place to relax at the end of great, but tiring 10 days. I really cannot recommend the Baraza highly enough, unless you are looking for a wild night life and loads of activities. Yes there is access to water sports on the beach either at the hotel or at the 2 sister hotels next door and there was gentle night time musical entertainment, but this is essentially a chill out hotel and it does this to perfection. Our seafront chalet was huge, beautifully appointed and maintained to a very high standard. The staff are second to none and the food excellent and at times outstanding - seafood and lobster in particular was especially good. The grounds are large and extremely well maintained. The sandy beach is beautiful and was never remotely busy. We used the spa once and had the "signature" Sultans Bath treatment which was superb.
Because Zanzibar is a relatively small island trips to anywhere else on the island are easy enough - we visited Stone Town and Jozani Forest (the unique Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkeys arereally cute), and did a dolphin boat trip and a spice tour. All were very enjoyable in their different ways. However, the highlight of Zanzibar for us was simply relaxing and enjoying one of the best hotels we have ever had the fortune to stay in.

Room Tip: Seafront rooms are worth the extra cost, but all rooms are superb.

After safari this was our chill out part of the holiday. We were staying in a 2 bedrooms villa which was nothing short of enornmous.
The staff were excellent, very attentive.
We were in an all inclusive package which meant eating in every night at the resort. The food is excellent but by the end of the week we felt different surroundings would have been welcomed but there really is nothing else in the area.

We took some lessons in kite surfing which was amazing.... The beach beside the resort is stunning .... The tide is in first thing in the morning and then goes right out leaving a shallow water which is good for reef walking. Snorkelling is also good and the water is clear turquoise.

We had a fantastic time here, the only downside is that there is not much to do outside of the hotel in terms of optional eating places etc.

Myself and my husband have recently returned from an amazing honeymoon in Tanzanzia for which we stayed at the Baraza for the last 10 nights of our trip following 4 nights Safari in the Serengeti. What a great choice we made!!
Upon arrival at the hotel (after a 30-40 minute drive in the mid afternoon sun) we were greeted at reception by several immaculately dressed staff and an inviting glass of iced orange juice! We were introduced to Jemmima who would be our personal host for the duration of our stay. She quickly talked us through some paperwork then gave us a tour of the hotel whilst our bags were taken to our room. The first thing that stood out for us was the friendliness of all the staff. As we walked around the grounds we were greeted by everyone from gardeners and maintenence men to bar staff and porters. The staff in the Ocean Bar even arranged for a snack to be ready for us once we'd had a chance to freshen up in our villa.
The Vila (Ocean View) itself was beautiful. Very light and spacious with a huge bathroom and Super-kingsized bed. There was also a living room area with flat screen TV, day bed and a mini bar stocked (daily) with all inclusive soft drinks and local beer. Outside there was a large terrace with a sofa, day bed, sun loungers and of course our own private plunge pool. The rooms were cleaned daily and the maid always left fresh flowers and even sprayed the room with fly spray each evening while we were at dinner to avoid any unwanted guests in the night!
We were more than happy with the Ocean view rather than ocean front room as they were actually more private and still had a lovely view of the sea.
The pool area and beach were always kept clean and the beach was cleared of seaweed each morning. The gardens were also kept immaculate and always looked beautiful.
The sea surrounding the hotel has a living reef and guests can borrow reef walking shoes to go and explore. We did this once but I was slightly put off by the sea snakes that a local had pointed out to us so that idea was short lived! There are also various other water sports on offer from wind surfing and kayaking to snorkling and scuba diving although we were far to relaxed to try any of these!!
Each villa has its own reserved sundowners on the beach to avoid dissapointment and guests are given a coconut to hang from their shade to indicate that they would like service. Basically if you don't want to be bothered while you are sunbathing you hang it high but if you are like us and more than happy to be waited on hand and foot then hang it low!
As for the food, we really can't fault it! Of the 10 nights we were there we only had a buffet on 4 occasions (meals are served on alternate night in their two restaurants) althought this is not a bad thing as the buffet was full of choice and top quality dishes, we had an oriental night twice, a bbq night and a spice/indian themed buffet. The rest of the time the hotel prepared a set menu of 5-6 courses made from local produce. Each course was thought out and prepared to the highest quality and was always delisious and very filling! If I had to make one critism it would be that there was sometimes too much! Lunch times were buffet style, with a selection of fresh grilled seafood and meat kebabs, fresh salads and sandwiches and a pasta bar. At 4 pm each day they served afternoon tea with a selection of teas, sandwches, cakes and cookies and at mid morning the bar staff came around the pool and beach areas with iced coffees and teas if you wanted them.
On some evenings they arranged cocktails and canapes before dinner so that guests and staff could get to know each other. They also had a telescope out on the clear nights so guests could do a bit of star gazing!
As for the little details we cannot thank Baraza enough for making our honeymoon and also my husbands birthday extra special. We were constantly suprised with little treats such as sparkling wine in our room, complimentary massages, beach lunches and breakfast in bed. On my husbands birthday (they had worked this our from his passport) they arranged a candle lit dinner for us by the pool with our own private waitress and even a huge chocolate cake for desert with all the staff singing happy birthday in swahili!
All in all we had a fantastic stay at the Baraza and would recommend to anyone! We hope to return one day in the future!

Room Tip: Go for Ocean view rather than Ocean front. they are slightly cheaper and a lot more secluded.

This elegant resort was a great place to finish off our Africa adventure. Stayed here post-safari and the heat of Stone Town, and instantly relaxed. Spacious grounds, airy white buildings and the enormous blue pool made it feel like a low-key pleasure palace. Our villa was fantastic, super-modern and meticulously serviced. It had a clever natural feature for privacy, low enough so we could see the ocean. The indoor/outdoor eating areas are ideal for refreshing breezes. The miles-long, white coral sand beach is very clean - with water shoes, we enjoyed the reef walking at low tide (and swimming at high tide). The African staff was very friendly and super-accommodating, the food excellent - lots of variety. We also had fun strolling down to the sister resort, Breezes, to check it out and enjoy its facilities, Like a lot of the couples and a few families we saw, we mainly wanted to unwind, kick back and enjoy the luxury, but there are lots of water activities available if you're more actively inclined. All round fabulous!

Decided on the Baraza after hearing from friends about it and reading the reviews. However, being linked to the hotel industry from the inspection side, I have the following comments:
- When you are paying around $ 800 a night, they shouldn't be charged $15 for Internet a day, and additional charge for expresso and latte over breakfast.
- The rooms are large, but the fittings very cheap Chinese products, light fittings, noisy air conditioning, acrylic bathtub, water taps, etc.
- You cant see the ocean from the Ocean view rooms... Deceiving description ... If you want to see the Ocean get the Ocean front rooms.
- the food is good when served from a la carte but the buffet food is not so good.
- I didn't like the overall design off the property as it reminds me of hotels in Dubai and cheap imitation of the one and only Royal mirage in Dubai. But this is a matter of personal taste.
- the staff are very friendly, but poorly trained.
- The beach is very dirty with seaweed and if you are in during a low tide, forget swimming.

Other tip, if you want to see stone town, book a night in town, as it takes one hour to get to town. If u are in town, try Jafeeri house or Emmerson spice house for a taste of old Zanzibar.

Valelilly, General Manager at Baraza Resort & Spa, responded to this review, July 20, 2013
Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback about your stay . We are sorry that Baraza did not live up to your expectations and would like to respond to your comments as follows.

All Ocean View rooms do have on Ocean view however they are not Ocean Front which is why they are described as such.

To suggest that Baraza is a cheap imitation of a Dubai hotel is something that we simply do not accept. Over 30 acres of coconut plantations and a kilometer of beach front land are dedicated to only 30 villas whereas in a normal commercial hotel development (as the very one you suggest in Dubai) there would be 300-500 rooms.

Moreover, Baraza is a work of great dedication, love and research into the Zanzibar culture, arts and Swahili architecture. We have gone through great efforts to incorporate the skills of the Zanzibaris and feature traditional designs and inspirations from Zanzibar’s history. The brass lamps are hand made, intricate cement plasters hand crafted by local artisans, wood painstakingly carved on every window and door, with marble laid on the floors and antique furniture pieces.

To suggest that this is a cheap hotel where we have taken shortcuts is simply not acceptable to us. The architecture and design of the hotel has been complemented by professionals in the field of design, hospitality and architecture and we have been featured in publications such as Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle, House and Garden to name just a few.

We thank you for the kind comments about the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food. We fully accept that taste is subjective and are happy that the vast majority of our clients have overwhelmingly positive comments about the hotel.

Came here for 5 nights to end our Honeymoon. The food at sit down dinners is fantastic. 5 or 6 courses. The wine is good as well and your glass never goes empty. The grounds are beautiful. The service at the beach is great too/the service in general is great too. I highly recommend getting an ocean front villa. Napping on your day bed with a view of the ocean is great. The spa was good as well. We received a lot of great extras and surprises for being honeymooners. A favorite quote from one of the food and bev managers "Everyone at Baraza is special, but you are extra special" -- And we really felt that way. Come here, worry about nothing, get treated like a king, enjoy the view.

Room Tip: Villa 7 is furthest from reception, but offers Max privacy.

We were a little apprehensive about Baraza having read Tripadvisor and one or two comments about the food..These people who write poor must come from a lonely planet. We have stayed at Sandy Lane Barbados and St Geran Mauritius .Baraza is up there with the best..The seafood is to die for . So fresh you can taste it.The hotel is well planned and the villas are truly luxurious. We had a beach front single bedroom. If you can afford it ,well worth the extra, but book quick as there are only 7!!!The staff are attentive ,happy and willing. ,discreet, left alone when you want. The beach is fabulous ,nice to be allowed to wander without the hastle of beach boys. The Zanzibaris we found, respected our views when we said we did not need assistance. The walk to the reef is a must ,child hood memories of rock pools , this time with a difference.Fabulous corals ,shells ,fish and even turtles! But take a stout stick.Make sure you take binoculars. There is so much going on ,fishermen in boats divers paragliding in the distance the colourful locals carrying on with daily life ,.
In conclusion we had a fabulous time the food was unbelievable, quality.presentation and service..You must try the Swahili.Lobster.

Room Tip: We had room 4 beach front.Central for the beach and dining..Room 7 is more secluded.
