“5 star resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

I could not say anything bad about this resort. Perfect for couples that seek relax and isolation. Nice design hotel with superbe views, a jetti restaurant in front of the indian ocean, friendly staff, good food and price according to category. For those that want to flavour local culture obviously there might be better spots.

I’ve stayed in this hotel end of April beginning of May this year, the Hotel is very well located and the employers are normally very friendly and welcome you very well, even with some difficulties in understanding you due to language barriers (Swahili vs English or French).

However, not everything it’s so good, visiting the Hotel in the low season and with low occupation rate can bring you some problems, less restaurants open and lower service level in some of the services available for the guests, explained due to economy proposes of the Hotel management, as such, be careful when planning your vacations.

Some additional notes:
- do not trust everything they told you on your reception, at least with me, there were some misunderstanding’s on the services available, that in the final were not (animation, restaurants, etc.);
- the beach its very good, however, there is an handicap to the ones who like to be on the water lots of time, it can only be fully profited when the tide it is almost full, once, in front, there are corals that limit its usage;
- be aware of your belongings, what it is normal in this type of destination, not so normal when you put things out of view and someone goes and stolen them from you. I didn’t expect that could happen inside the room and from inside a backpack stored in the shelf of the cabinet. But it can occur, be careful;
- if you contract all inclusive, be aware, it ends on check out, even that you could need to stay a little longer;

So my recommendation, prepare well your trip and take in consideration what could be yours expectations.

Room Tip: Sea View first floor not too close to the swimming pool

Dear Guest

Thank you for choosing our hotel as your recent holiday destination in Zanzibar. On behalf of Melia Zanzibar team, I truly appreciate your concerns and the feedback given on our services during your stay. We take all comments from our guests seriously, as they are the base which we work on every day to improve and offer the best services to our guests

On a different note, I am saddened to hear that you were not satisfied during your entire stay although our residence manager was checking on you most of the time but you never mentioned anything to him. However I wish like to highlight some points in regards to your comments. Upon your arrival all information concerning our hotel such as facilities, meal plans, safety of your belongings and Gabi beach was given to you. Concerning benefits and programmes, all outlets were operating in a normal way during your stay as it shows in the contract with tour operator as well as the one you contracted. The only outlet which was not fully operating was AQUA restaurant and that was not included in your package.

In regards to the missing of your item, as soon as you reported the incidence we contacted the nearby Police Station of which we offered you to make an official report which you did. Internal investigation with Police was done in collaboration with our security team; unfortunately nothing was recovered as there was no any evidence like breakage in the room which made the investigation more complicated. This case is still in the hands of the police, we cannot interfere on our side as they are trusted governmental institution. In addition to that, you were aware that usage of safe box inside the hotel is mandatory; you also signed the hotel policy concerning safety issues.

I have noted your comment on slow services of which we are working on the details to avoid future occurrences.

Wishing to welcome you again to Melia Zanzibar!

Best Regards

There's no much more to add to what has been said in previous comments.
A great hotel, great location, great service, fabulous people.

It's only fair to recognize the work of several members of the staff (I think it's a first time in my comments I do this) Swimming pool bar: Regina, Veronika, Mosses. Gabi Beach and restaurant: Betty, Suleiman, MD. Room cleaning: Evelyn. Restaurant Vyiine. Swimming pool: I can't remember how to spell his name but sounds something like Sidaly (sorry I just coudn't read the badge properly).

I also have to mention Cesar, from the hotel senior management, a very customer focused and solutions driven professional.

Things to know:
- If you are in a all inclusive program, you'll have to pay your last lunch (checkout at 12.00), I think they should rethink this policy.
- From what was told to us at our arrival, we were there in their low season (end of April). That means some restaurants may be closed. While we understand this fact, we were never warned about it.

The Hotel's location is amazing on the East Coast of Zanzibar, no corals on the beach and the view is amazing in addition to the huge land scape for the hotel around 43 hectares makes the experience even better.

There are a lot of things to do in the hotel and the surroundings, the staff are very friendly and well trained for service industry. If you are travelling with kids it is better to take mosquitos and insects lotion or cream cause they are too many that may be difficult for high sensitive people to stay outside at night but nothing serious. The weather was perfect, the fruits and vegetables used in the hotel are actually planted in the hotel’s premises.

Room Tip: Since the Hotel has a free wi-fi so it's better to have something close to the main building if...

Excellent for relax. Everything was good, since the food, the room, service. The beach is excellent (Gabi beach) with great water in terms of temperature, color, sand, everything. The hotel offers very pleasant spaces to relax and admire the nature. It features a SPA with a very good quality. It is possible to make sport too. The service was very good. The entire staff responds promptly to any request and very friendly and professional way. I strongly recommend! The motto is Hakuna matata (no problems)!!!

Room Tip: Romance Pavillons are amazing!

We spent two weeks in January 2013 at the Melia on the Zanzibari East coast. The hotel is very well managed, with highly motivated staff (partly from Germany). The food was superb, in particular the indian style buffets of the
nepalese-indian chef. The two Kasach/Russian musicians entertained us with classical vocal and violin pop music and were never boring even after two weeks. To reach the beach, you have to take the golf car unless you are fit enought for a 30 minutes walk along the beach (during low tide) or on a conrete path.

Room Tip: To avoid long walks, chose a room close to the main building.

We've only just left and I'm using the free wifi at Zanzibar airport (little traveller tip!) to say what an amazing time we spent at Melia.

The hotel grounds are stunning. It's huge and so well landscaped with gorgeous vistas of the Indian Ocean. The food in the main restaurant and other bars/restaurants is great too with enough variety to keep our 5 day stay interesting.

The rooms are spacious and the modern bathrooms are probably the highlight with an indoor and outdoor shower area.

Gabi Beach (the hotel beach) is fantastic as well. While here we travelled to beaches in Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani and Pongwe as we wanted to be sure to have have seen the top beaches and can honestly say that Gabi was the best by far in terms of beauty and furniture/cabanas etc... We were here in low season though so all of them were quiet and relaxing so if you are looking for crowds and parties/excitement we can't really comment!

My only negative comment is the service is a little slow but that seems to just be the pace of life on the island in general, and our telephone wasn't working properly either with so much static it could by be used or with no dial tone. But despite these minor hiccups we would def recommend it to everyone.
