“Perfect local place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

A small fishermen's village away from the resorts, friendly people and cosy bungalows, very nice price. We were treated like family and we miss them already!! You can buy the fresh fish in the market just on it's side and they cook it for you for a small price. They can rent you bikes, and we did snorkelling with them in a local boat, was such a nice experience! Absolute recommended

“Surprisingly high-quality rooms, less exciting location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

Very good value for what's offered- our room was lovely, with a four-poster, very clean. Seemed much more upscale than what I was expecting.

Downside is the not-very-fun area- Matemwe's not really for partying. There are also a lot of people (mostly kids) who will give you a lot of hassle on the beach, which more or less nixes the sunbathing option.

“Clean, affordable beachfront bungalows with friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

We met Ally Keys in Stone Town and decided to check out his place in Matemwe. We had rented a car through him as well. Ally is a fun-loving guy who is eager to please. He made our trip memorable, the ultimate fixer. Keys bungalows were perfect for us. We wanted an affordable, clean bungalow on the beach and that is exactly what we got. Now mind you it's not easy to find or get to. We had to drive down a long ways on a sandy, potholed road (4 wheel a must if it rains) though he has it clearly marked. In general driving in Zanzibar is a hassle because the police checkpoints stop you every 10 miles or so and ask for bribes (something Ally cued us on early). The cottages are small and the bed is comfortable. We also rented bikes and went on a snorkeling excursion to the nearby Mnemba island. Keys charged $25/person whereas other were charging up to $45 for essentially the same thing. Ideal for backpackers.

“Perfect Low Budget Paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

Keys Bungalows is a realy friendly and perfect organised resort. Price-Quality is super!
It's still an resort, but not that expensive as others on that side of the island. Ideal for backpackers, to have your last days in a luxery, beautiful and flexible place!
The women of the house is very friendly and open. All the staff is polite and helpfull and the cooking lady is amasing. It's next to the beach, so in a 10 second walk you're in the beautiful blue sea. There is a diving and snorkling school next door, a worthed experience!
The rooms are clean and zanzibari. The wooden roof belongs to the beach picture.
It's a place to recommend!

“Terrible mismanagement”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2012 via mobile

We had booked two rooms for 5 people via multiple emails with keys bungalows.
Despite this booking being confirmed before we arrived, these rooms were not available when we got there. Instead of being advised of this on arrival, we were ushered in under false pretenses of "welcome to paradise" and given no information. When it became clear the rooms were not available, we were offered a dirty staffroom above the bar, which didn't even contain enough beds, and we were still expected to pay for it.
No apologies were offered and no help was provided to find alternative accommodation. In fact when we asked for assistance with transport, they offered a rate that was double what we were offered by a local taxi driver.
Ultimately this is unacceptable and I would strongly discourage anyone from staying here.
