“Pleasant, beautiful beach setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2011

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Tanzanite - the instant we arrived and saw the beach, we regretted that we only booked two nights there before heading to Stonetown. Our room was located in one of the bungalows closest to the beachfront, and it was quite spacious and clean, with a beautiful view of the water. Overall comfortable and well-maintained grounds. The staff were friendly and the restaurant was fine. My biggest complaint is that the strip of beach on which the resort lies is a little difficult to swim with the tide patterns (low tide is very far out, and high tide absorbs the beach entirely - you have it hit it at just the right time). Also, the beach is covered with coral (and often times sea urchins!), so watch your step if you do opt to take a swim during high tide.

My only other "issue" (which is not related to the resort, necessarily, but Nungwi in general), is that although they advertise that the resort is a short walk to the village--and it is--there is really not much to do or see in the village. I was hoping for some cute restaurants, or maybe some craft markets, but there wasn't even that. It was unfortunate that we felt a bit confined to being at the resort, as I generally like to immerse myself in the local culture. But at least the resort was very pleasant and a great place to relax on a hammock and simply enjoy being at the beach.

My boyfriend and I booked Tanzanite after reading rave reviews so we were sadly rather disappointed by our stay.

The road to the hotel is a bit dirty, but that's how Africa is. I wonder if the people who 'complain' about this in their reviews also noticed that people live along that road. Once you arrive at the hotel and see the beautiful, well tended gardens, white sands and blue sea, it looks like paradise. The cottages are very cute and comfortable, although the low water pressure in the shower was annoying.

The downside of the hotel is really the location. Due to the nature of the tides, the sea is very far out in the morning and crashing against the rocks below the hotel later on in the afternoon, which leaves only a narrow window for swimming. There are also lots of sea urchins and sharp stones to watch out for, so swimming is not particularly enjoyable even then.

The food in the restaurant was also pretty disappointing, particularly at lunchtime. If we hadn't paid for half-board, we'd have tried to find somewhere else to eat. Breakfast was very tasty though.

We really wanted to love this hotel, but for the money we paid, it was disappointing.

This isn't a bad hotel but don't expect luxury at this price. Rooms are adequate but have only a ceiling fan and can be unbearably hot at night. Service is OK - staff have a laid back attitude. Meals are quite good - if you like chicken and fish. No major faults to be found although road to hotel strewn with litter tips.

We booked a week tanzanite resort based on Tripadvisor reviews, and boy were we disappointed when we arrived.
We had just stayed a week in Stonetown and 3 days at Pongwe when we arrived.
The roads to tanzanite is a anything but clean, but really REALLY dirty.
When we arrived at Tanzanite, we were met by James, the manager, who through out our 1 day stay (we ended up leaving) was really sweet and helpful.
But the rest of the workers at Tanzanite were rude, and we felt super guilty even being there.
Tanzanite beach resort felt like entering a prison. It is NOT a resort but a small hotel, not the buildings, but the area. It's tiny and you are stuck.
If you want to leave, they will not call you a taxi but you have to wait for the Tanzanite taxi (which by the way, is double price of an actual Nungwi taxi), in our case, we waited 2 hours for the tanzanite taxi..
The breakfast was pretty much something out of a bad movie.
And even though we were the only ones for breakfast besides another couple and the breakfast table were placed in the middle of the room, I was instructed to only walk on one side of the table......twice by the waitress who seemed very unhappy with us being there.
We ended up going to the west side of Nungwi where we found a hotel which was 40 $ cheaper pr. night, right on the beach with no walls around the facilities and with great people and food.

We really don't think that Tanzanite is a bad place, but it is extremely un-personal, REALLY expensive compared to anything in zanzibar and the location is horrible.

Both the owner and manager were nothing but nice to us, but we wouldn't recommend it to anyone due to it's location and quality.

I experienced great hospitality from the staff at the Tanzanite hotel long before i arrived with the organisation of their taxi service, having communicated with the manager through e-mail several times from home. I searched ther internet endlessly before i made my booking for a hotel that was, comfortable, in a good location, safe, and value for money. I was sure i had found the best place for me and i wasn't dissapointed.

I was picked up prompt upon my arrival into Zanzibar and was taken to my hotel by a very friendly driver and greeted by welcoming, smiling staff and a refreshing welcome drink which was greatly appreciated in the blistering heat! After a quick check in, a porter carried my bag to my room (a basic garden view) which was spacious, clean and very comfortble. I made my way to the sea front of the hotel which i can only discribe as beautiful and peaceful with hammocks, comfortable sunbeds and a stunning views over the indian ocean. The gardens were well maintained each day by staff who would always greet you as they passed and the very sweet young girls in the restauraunt were only too pleased to make me feel welcome and at home.

I enjoyed a full breakfast each morning after sunrise, in the spacious dining area that had perfect views of the sea and the Dhows sailing by. And the lovely Monica would organise cooked eggs for me from the kitchen :-) After the tide went out each morning it was possible to take a walk down the beach into the town of Nungwi which was about ten minutes away, where you could find the bigger hotels and main stretches of beach. However in my opinion the best spot of beach was right outside the Tanzinite as there were no crowds and it was much more peaceful. To the right of the hotel (about 100metres) was the best spot for swimming or snorkelling and you can watch the locals fishing or shell collecting in the shallow waters.

The food at the Tanzinaite was yummy, and the fresh fish was delicious. At twilight they would light a fire at the beach front, where you could relax or dine. On a few occasions i chose to go into the town in the evenings with friends to explore different resauraunts and bars and the staff were only more than happy to organise a taxi back for us in the late hours. On one evening i had a shaperone kindly walk me safely to a resaurant down the road, as to walk anywhere after dark, whether it be along the beach or on the road is definately not a good idea even if you are in a group. I felt perfectly safe walking along the beach alone during the day, and i was told i was safe to walk along the road outside the hotel in daylight, however i never felt comfortable in doing so unless i was with friends. After sundown, it was definately a must to be driven into town and back due to safety issues and the staff at the Tanzinite were always vigil about their residents safety.

I felt perfecly safe in Nungwi village in the evening and made many friends at the local beach bar and ate some great food at the Langi Langi on a few occasions which i would definately recommend for dining! The chef there is very friendly and more than willing to make any dish to your taste even if it isn't on the menu.

I stayed at the Tanzinite for ten nights and still wasn't ready to leave, it provided perfect R&R after a tough trip up mount KIlimanjaro, where the friendly staff were more than willing to accomodate my stay, really, there is nothing they won't do for you! The hotel is clean and comfortable with views and sounds of the indian ocean from your room, in a great location i would definately recommend the Tanzanite to anybody. The only thing i could fault was the price of the trips and massage facilities at the hotel as they were quite pricey compared to other hotels however it is possible to barter to an agreed price. The laundry and internet service is very reasonable however!

Thankyou to all the staff at the Tanzinite for making my stay in Zanzibar one i will never forget! :-))

Beautiful location, good restaurant and very reasonable prices, although the cost will be going up quite a bit starting in Jan/11 (from $50/night for a garden view room to around $80/night - the other rooms increasing accordingly as well). Great front desk staff, can arrange transport and tours. Free wireless internet - was on and off during our stay but that seemed like it might have been unusual.

Water is only high enough to swim at certain times of the day. Likewise, walking on the beach is only possible the opposite times.

Gorgeous little thach-roofed huts most of which face directly onto the ocean- its like something out of a postcard. On arrival we were greeted with a glass of tropical juice served in a coconut, complete with hibiscus flower garnish! The rooms are very clean, serviced daily, and the bed was very comfortable. The resort has a restaraunt which serves a mostly western menu for breakfast lunch and dinner and the food is reasonably good-our seafood was overcooked, but otherwise quite tasty. The restaraunt however is how they make their money- with a captive consumer market. There are not many other food options in Nungwi, and stonetown is a good hour and a half away by taxi.

The service is pretty good too. We had an issue paying our bill by Visa, and the receptionist blamed us (he was convinced that our card was faulty), but it turned out that it was actually his machine- we recieved no apology! Besides this one incident however, we were very happy with the service.

If you are looking for a fun and/or adventurous holiday, this place is not for you. The resort is small and the other travellers staying here were predominantly introverted couples, most spending the day lazing on the beach-beds reading books. Again, the isolation of this end of the island is such that there aren't many other choices for things to do in and/or around Nungwi.

If on the other-hand, reading books under the beatiful african sun on an island in the midlle of the Indian Ocean is your thing, I highly recommend Tanzanite.
