“Nice rooms and pool but not possible to swim in sea”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

The rooms at the Tanzanite are clean and comfortable. A large, comfortable double bed and a large bathroom with hot water (on demand, you turn a switch 15 minutes before showering).

The resort has a nice pool and plenty of sun chairs, hammocks and a like to relax in. Beware if you are looking to swim in the ocean though as this is not possible here regardless of tide. At high tide we went in quickly but even for us (reasonably young and fit), the waves were very strong and the bottom filled with rocks.

Food in restaurant is not very good and service level of staff is among the worse we encountered in Africa – they just don’t seem to care. We also struggled for three days to get a cold beer (not possible).

Best –Nice pool, loads of sun chairs

Good – Rooms

Not so good – Staff friendliness

We stayed 4 nights here and the grounds are presented fantastically with lovely staff willing to help in any way possible.

The resort is about a 20 minute walk from the main area of Nungwi, which has it's pros and cons. It's fantastic for relaxing and not being overloaded with other tourists, however it's a long way to go to visit other restaurants.

Unfortunately the Tanzanite's restaurant is not great. Breakfast and lunch is bareable, however we ate dinner here twice and really did not enjoy it. Choices are minimal and the taste wasn't great.

The other big problem is water pressure is very minimal and electricity was very erratic, which makes for extremely hot sleepless nights.

Again the place looks great and staff are fantastic, but the down sides really need to be rectified before I'd recommend it.

We stayed at Tanzanite for 4 nights in January 2011; the hotel is very nicely situated with a pretty garden down to the water and pleasant bungalow accommodation. The power supply is a bit erratic and the water pressure pretty poor so don't expect a cool room or great shower but you make allowances when visiting far flung places! Our two points of major concern are the following: firstly the lagoon is very unsuitable for bathing as it is full of sea urchins - I would not recommend visiting without neoprene boots or sturdy reef shoes. To reach the reef when the tide is out is a long walk! Secondly, the food here is pretty awful. There are few options available other than the hotel restaurant at night and the menu very quickly becomes tiresome - after only two nights we were dreading a visit to the restaurant. The service is very slow and the choice pretty limited. I must say though that the staff during our stay were on the whole lovely, and especially caring, as my other half had gone down with a nasty case of food poisoning in Stone Town prior to our stay and they provided a very soothing sweet spicy tea which made her feel much better. Think carefully before booking here.

I still hear the words of the chef in my ear: "sorry, we don't have the fish you ordered anymore but I will bring you another one.." -some hours later, I had food poison and won't go into details, but it was really awful. At the same time, like many times before, the toilet did not flush - again no details..
electricity is also somewhat unreliable, but I guess thats part of the deal
Besides that, you can't swim during low tide (sea is far off the coast), nor during hide tide (too big waves).
Yes, you could use the pool - but although the waterdepth is only about 2m, you can't see to the bottom which tells something about the water quality.
Internet terribly slow as the service. I don't want to say all is bad, its just that you can get so much more for the same price only a few miles to the west, where the beach is at all times swimable, service, food etc are better. Try to organize trips and taxi rides locally - for about half the price..

Room Tip: Kendwa rock is defineitly the place to be - beach swimable at all time, great service and really a c...

James and his team were really wonderful. They made the impossible possible. The chef at the resort offered great value for money food, with healthy sized portions. Service was great. Accommodation was clean. Overall a really pleasant place.

Getting to the resort was an eyesore with the litter and rubbish from nearby informal settlements strewn about. Perhaps all the resorts in the area should pool resources to improve on the collection and recycling of waste.

Helpful and friendly staff, clean and comfortable bungalows with plenty of sun beds in spacious well kept gardens, but the hotel/complex is a bit isolated being approx. 25 minutes walk down the beach (tide permitting) to the only two small general food stores in the small village. The food at the Tanzanite was reasonably priced with a small varied choice every day and was quite good. Nothing to do at night except to chat to other guests.

This resort, or hotel, has several qualities to it, two of which are: it is small, thus the staff is very considerate and it is far from the madding crowd of the Western coast of Zanzibar where hoards of low cost holiday makers fight for a space on the beach or at the restaurant.
Two drawbacks to this place, however: it is quite difficult to swim either at high or low tide. At high tide the waves are strong and a deterrent to any kind of enjoyment of the sea, at low tide you need to walk quite far to go beyond the coral reef (bring some plastic shoes, it helps). The second irksome fact about this place concerns water bottles in the room. The water is not drinkable (like every where else in Zanzibar or Tanzania); you find a bottle of mineral water in your room the first day, then you have to pay for it for the rest of the stay. This is not going to break the budget, but I find this very annoying; a little bit like when hotels make you pay for Wifi... (by the way there is a free Wifi connexion near the front desk...).
The food is really good and the place is not too far from a nice diving centre (Ras Nungwi). All in all a nice place.
