“Food poison”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2012

I still hear the words of the chef in my ear: "sorry, we don't have the fish you ordered anymore but I will bring you another one.." -some hours later, I had food poison and won't go into details, but it was really awful. At the same time, like many times before, the toilet did not flush - again no details..
electricity is also somewhat unreliable, but I guess thats part of the deal
Besides that, you can't swim during low tide (sea is far off the coast), nor during hide tide (too big waves).
Yes, you could use the pool - but although the waterdepth is only about 2m, you can't see to the bottom which tells something about the water quality.
Internet terribly slow as the service. I don't want to say all is bad, its just that you can get so much more for the same price only a few miles to the west, where the beach is at all times swimable, service, food etc are better. Try to organize trips and taxi rides locally - for about half the price..

Room Tip: Kendwa rock is defineitly the place to be - beach swimable at all time, great service and really a c...

“Amazing Value for Money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2011

James and his team were really wonderful. They made the impossible possible. The chef at the resort offered great value for money food, with healthy sized portions. Service was great. Accommodation was clean. Overall a really pleasant place.

Getting to the resort was an eyesore with the litter and rubbish from nearby informal settlements strewn about. Perhaps all the resorts in the area should pool resources to improve on the collection and recycling of waste.

“Quiet beach side bungalow for relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2011

Helpful and friendly staff, clean and comfortable bungalows with plenty of sun beds in spacious well kept gardens, but the hotel/complex is a bit isolated being approx. 25 minutes walk down the beach (tide permitting) to the only two small general food stores in the small village. The food at the Tanzanite was reasonably priced with a small varied choice every day and was quite good. Nothing to do at night except to chat to other guests.

“Nice place to unwind”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2011

This resort, or hotel, has several qualities to it, two of which are: it is small, thus the staff is very considerate and it is far from the madding crowd of the Western coast of Zanzibar where hoards of low cost holiday makers fight for a space on the beach or at the restaurant.
Two drawbacks to this place, however: it is quite difficult to swim either at high or low tide. At high tide the waves are strong and a deterrent to any kind of enjoyment of the sea, at low tide you need to walk quite far to go beyond the coral reef (bring some plastic shoes, it helps). The second irksome fact about this place concerns water bottles in the room. The water is not drinkable (like every where else in Zanzibar or Tanzania); you find a bottle of mineral water in your room the first day, then you have to pay for it for the rest of the stay. This is not going to break the budget, but I find this very annoying; a little bit like when hotels make you pay for Wifi... (by the way there is a free Wifi connexion near the front desk...).
The food is really good and the place is not too far from a nice diving centre (Ras Nungwi). All in all a nice place.

“Beautiful hotel, but the food and service is not that good. Cleaning service terrible!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2011

The hotel is nice looking, small-sized rooms.

The food was really not good. No African food at all. just a poor attempt to European and American dishes. French fries and schnitzel among other things. their seafood was good and looked nice. the garden is really not fair as it says in the hotel description. However, the area with lounge chairs looks very nice and has a beautiful view. The restaurant is large and has a very nice sea view.

Do not use the hotel laundry service! They broke one of my shirts and refused to replace it. They ironed the mark on the front so that went totally destroyed and made it two sizes larger than it was from the beginning. I cannot use the shirt anymore. The manager's miserable excuse was "it has not happened before and therefore we can not compensate you." The shirt is worth about $ 60. what I was offered was a bottle of wine in the resutaurant, AFTER we checked out so we could not use it anyway. Terrible. I'm extremely disappointed. The hotel owes me $ 60.

The staff at the restaurant is very unpleasant. they scoff at the guests and you feel you must apologize for even beeing there. It takes a very long time to get your food. A pasta dish for lunch, when you are almost alone in the restaurant takes about 40 minutes to get. Pasta with tomato sauce. It takes five minutes to do!

The hotel does not have a generator when the power goes out. The electricity disappeared almost every night. Only a fan in the room, so it gets very hot and difficult to sleep at night when the power goes out.
When you want to take a shower dont expect water from the tap. I stood and waited for thirty minutes in the shower that the water would come back at one point. The water is cold when it arrives and it drips from the tap, no pressure what so ever. I was promised that someone would come and look at it but no one came.

My boyfriend was sick when we stayed at the hotel. Do not know if this came from our stay at a hotel in Stone Town. That hotel was very nice and clean so it is difficult for me to believe. The manager called a doctor who took care of him. he had a bacteria in the stomach and was sick for about two days. The hotel manager was nice and he reduced the hotel bill so we did not have to pay for his half-board those days he did not eat anything.

There is nothing to do outside the hotel. Bring many books you're here.
The tide goes very far out at days so bring swimming shoes, otherwise you have to stay at the beach or get your feet stung by sea urchins.
