“Clean but damp and basic”

Amaan Beach Bungalows

We stayed at the Amaan in Nungwi for four nights. Rooms were clean but basic and got incredibly damp due to the closeness of the ocean. The balconies overlooking the ocean are ok but not properly separated from other rooms. After four nights we moved to a hotel in Kendwa which was half the price from Nungwi.
The beach in Nungwi is not near as nice as in Kendwa. It disappears at high tide, there is no shade from the sun and at low tide you need to watch out for the sharp corals.
So definetly recommend a stay at Kendwa beach instead.

We had booked a 6 nights stay at Amaan Bungalows after climbing Kilimanjaro and doing a Safari like so many before us. The drive to the hotell from the Airport was nice but when we got closer to Nungwi it was pretty much horrible. Litter everywhere, especially plastic bags etc. This changed when we entered the hotell part of Nungwi and after that no complaints on my part on the cleaning. But I do feel sorry for the locals having to live with that much litter probably caused by tourist.

The hotell it self was low key and very relaxing, something that we were very much looking forward to. It had its own little shop aswell as a massage place. There are several restaurants lining the entire beach so i would really recommend going to different places every night since the food at the hotells own restaurant was not really anything to brag about.

We had booked both a deluxe room and a sea view room and I must say that the sea view room was really worth it! It felt a lot brighter and cleaner than the deluxe rooms and the fact that you woke up with the sounds of waves crashing righ outside your door and the view of the Indian Ocean sparkling through the windows is hard to beat. Remember that you have to give in your key to have it cleaned everyday!

So to sum things up, we had a great time in Zanzibar and Amaan Bungalows did nothing to spoil that stay. If you are looking for a resort then you will probably have luck looking somewhere else, but if you are looking for a decent hotell right on the beach close to everything in Nungwi then Amaan is it.

Btw, there is a outdoor bar not far away if you want to go out and have a drink. And it is in decent distance so that they don't keep you up at night if you want to relax.

We stayed at Amaan for a couple of nights, the surrounding is lovely, nice beach, clear water perfect for people who just want to get away and relax. The rooms at Amaan was nice but the service was terrible..

The personal seemed offended when we asked for new towels or information etc.

They overcharge you big if you book anything in the reception, I really recommend using any of the services on the beaches nearby instead where you get pretty much half the price.

We took one trip with the hotell, at 8 we were supposed to go but there were no driver there until 9.

The breakfast that is included contains of two egg, 2 small bread pieces and 3 small pieces of fruit, fast coffee and something they call juice. NOT really worth getting up in the morning for.

I do recommend Zanzibar for a vacation but I would look for another place to stay than Amaan, the Kendwa area is well worth looking up.

Zanzibar was lovely but IMO it has some problems, very annoying sellers on the beach, even if you say no 20 times, they will continue to harrass and say, special price for you etc.. They doesnt seem to know what NO means.

If you are going to buy something be sure to bargain, alot of stuff we bought we got down to 1/3 of the original price.

Also there arent much to do more than tan, relax, swim, snorkel and dive. There are more sellers on the beach than actual tourists.

The Jozani forrest is worth a visit, also stonetown a day or two. Maybe the spicetour if your really into spices, but dont buy anything there, half the price or more in stonetown markets. We didnt go to see the dolphins

If you like diving or snorkeling Mmeba island is a must!

So basically go to Zanzibar if you want to relax on the beach. Paradise for relaxing.

I stayed at Amaan Bungalows for 3 nights in October after climbing Kilimanjaro and doing a safari. We wanted nothing more than to lay on the beach and forget about the sore muscles. The water was GORGEOUS; however, there were a few impediments to our relaxation.

First, one day one we noticed what appeared to be (and smelled to be) an open sewage line leading from the bungalows directly into the ocean. It was quite foul and made us not get in the water. There were also jellyfish at that time (obviously, not the hotel's fault) and lots of petrol in the water from the boats idling almost non-stop right on the beach. The toilets regularly didn't work. There was essentially zero nightlife. There were bars with no one in them. The beaches were full of extremely rude people harrassing you to buy things, massages, etc. (Again, I understand this, but I've never been treated as poorly for saying "no, thanks" the way we were there.)

That said, the rooms were clean and comfortable (thankfully since we ended up spending most of our time in the room or on our balcony overlooking the ocean since we were grossed out by the water) and the staff was very friendly.

We stayed for one full week in Amaan, after our safari. From all the places we stayed in during our 17 day Kenya / Tanzania tour, this one was BY FAR the cleanest and best value.

We stayed in a bungalow with airconditioning. Regular price is 60$ per night, but on arrival I was able to negotiate it down to 50$ when I mentioned the other hotels around them were offering last minute - low season discounts as well (which they really did).

There are two restaurants at Amaan, but they are very slow preparing the food. We waited for over 1 hour in an EMPTY restaurant for a pasta... Breakfast is small (no buffet), but it was tasty.

For activities, you better compare prices with operators at the beach, instead of booking at the reception where things are more expensive. We did a combined Spicy Tour and Stone Town trip for 35.000 TSH per person (30 US$) through Captain Adam at the beach. Diving we did with Spanish Dancer (70$ / p for 2 dives - after negotiating).

At the airport the official taxi price to Nungwi is 60 US$, I was able to negotiate it down to 43.000 TSH (35US$). On the way back, I used Captain Adams again who offered me 40.000 TSH after some negotiating (again).

Overall we had an excellent time at Amaan, and would recommend it to everybody !
