My wife daughter and I spent 10 days in these beautiful surroundings in July 2014 with every need catered for by the ever attentive and friendly staff. Food was varied and the quality excellent.
The resident dive centre Scuba Do also provided a very professional service. On our 44th wedding anniversary the staff put special flowers with a card from the General Manager on the bed together with a delicious cake and champagne !
Our stay at La Gemma Dell'Est rates right up at the top of the many hotels we have stayed in during the last 45 years of visiting nearly 60 countries around the world.

Room Tip: Levels 3 and 4 have better sea views but for a shorter walk to the beach and pool take level 1

We just spent a week at this resort, and were very impressed. The place looks even better in real life than in photos. A fantastic beach, warm staff, good food and pleasant surroundings. We were particularly impressed with the staff. The only challenge is noise from the nearby resorts and reggae bar, which can be quite disturbing.

We have just returned from a week at Diamonds La Gemma and I must say we had an wonderful holiday.

The hotel is in a great location; the ocean is impossibly turquoise and the sand impossibly white!

The hotels best quality is their staff, all of whom are friendly and seem to take great pride that they work for La Gemma.

Travelled for 10th Anniversary 14 - 21 June

A gem of a hotel situated on a great spot; North Coast.

Yes, the sea is azure crystal clear blue and the beach sand white (proper white) !

It is about an hours transfer from the aiport; maybe a little longer, however we found the drive interesting !

The public areas are well maintained and thought out, the restaurants classy and atmospheric, the gardens gorgeous and there are friendly "Jambos" around each corner. The views are breathtaking !

After viewing a number of hotels in that region I think it fair to say that in my opinion it is one of the best and probably the biggest.

It is located right on the beach; although it is affected by the tides.
However there is a gorgeous elevated beach area with plenty of loungers for when the sea is in which is really lovely.
The beach itself is lovely and good for swimming and one can still swim when the tide is in as they have lovely wooden steps leading straight into the sea !

The elevated beach forms part of a large sandy palmed tree area which hosts a lovely big swimming pool and a great beach bar and snack area. This is part of the inclusive package and the options are good.

In the evening the Coral Restaurant (same area) can be booked as an alternative to the main restuarant and is part of the inclusive package. it is right next to the beach, service and atmosphere was fantastic, tropical and the pizza delicious ! One can also book and pay for a private table right on the sand which looked out of this world !

Close by is a stunning wooden structure on stilts out at sea which is a novel place to relax and enjoy a late morning coffee, sundowner or nightcap.

Entertainment is relatively low key compared to other islands, but every evening there was a surprise of some sort and it was really enjoyable. All in the typical Zanzibar laid back style; although it is evident that a lot of effort goes into all.

If you prefer authentic little wooden type chalets and more partying then possibly look more Kwenda way. However, in my opinion Gemma has just the right blend of everything and I wouldnt have wanted more or less !

Thank you Gemma; you really spoilt us for our 10th anniversary, very special and most gracious.

Book it - dont umm and arh as I did, it's great ! Treat yourself, it's a gorgeous hotel on a gorgeous island ! We are fortunate in that we have travelled to quite a number of islands and Zanzibar is now honestly one of my favourites for a host of reasons,

I have no hesitation in recommending Gemma Dell Est whatsoever. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Asanta Sana Gemma; best wishes to all and keep up the good work !

Really hope to see you again !

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2014

My new Wife and I spent 10 days at La Gemma Dell' Est from May 6th - 17th May 2014. We hadn't initially even contemplated Africa, aiming more for the Maldives or something similar to spend our special break. We engaged Hays Travel in Banbury UK (Lisa Read) to find us the best deals. After looking at hundreds of Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius Caribbean etc, she asked of we had thought about Zanzibar! It hadn't come anywhere in our thought process but after looking at the resort photos (which are all totally genuine by the way, no filters or effects were used in the colours) we were instantly hooked. We booked and the travel agent informed them that it was our honeymoon.

The journey was a long one but worth every second. The airport is very basic (they are building a new one) but functional. Make sure you get a certificate for Yellow Fever, without it you will not get into the country! We went through Passport control and were met by Ali the Thomas Cook local rep where we arranged a meeting at the resort the following day and got into our Private Transfer bus as arranged by Thomas Cook. The journey was an hour and 10 minutes or so from Stone Town to the resort. The journey takes you through multiple villages where you get to see how the Zanzibarians live. I wont tell you all the history now as you need to discover for yourself.

On arrival at the resort, we were met by 5 people each with massive smiles and drinks and a refreshing cold towel to wipe away the travel! We were told we had been upgraded to a Suite and would benefit from several enhancements to our package as it was our honeymoon. We were shipped off to our room on a golf buggy with a member of the resorts management Team which was lovely as we were so tired!

We entered the 2 room suite which was very tastefully decorated, the mini bar was full and there were beautiful petals on our bed and a message in petals on our table next to a beautifully chilled bottle of Champagne in an ice bucket. At that point a Butler arrived and we were told he would be looking after us for the duration of the stay during the daytime and that we would have another butler (Paul) in the evening! This was a total shock as he let us know what he would be doing for us. This was allocated to us as part of the honeymoon package. His name was Abdallah and really made our stay amazing. He taught us Swahili and was always on hand if we needed to know anything. One day near the end of our stay, we were down by the pool when Abdallah came down and informed us we had a visitor in our room and would we please accompany him back there. We had no clue what he was on about but followed him. When we got back into the room, our dinig table had a beautiful fruit platter and a fresh coconut with a straw. Then he placed a woven leaf hat on us both and him, slipped a watch made of leaves on our arms and a woven leaf tie around my neck. To top it off he presented us with a beautiful painting that we could take home to remind us of him. This really blew me away and when talking to the management they told me that this wasnt normal and that he had arranged it all himself! This really blew us away.

Every evening Paul bought us a plate of canope's and a freshly made cocktail for pre dinner (around 6.30) which was no extra charge,

After a couple of hours sleep we went up to have dinner in the Pavillion Restaurant. That again was breathtaking. The range of food (buffet style) was out of this world. With so many options to choose from i cannot understand anyone who would not find something they like. Every night we were greeted at the door by the waiters and waitresses (who knew our names after the first night) There are many dining options at the resort, The Pavillion buffet, The Beach Grill for Ala Carte (special booking) and Beach Pizzeria (special booking but included in the All Inclusive package) All were truly top class! During Dinner they have a singer providing backing music to your meal. His name is Simone, he is Italian and truly has the voice of an angel. My wife and I are musicians which they found out very quickly so were invited up on several occasions to join him or to sing ourselves which again was a lovely touch.

After meals there are more options for where to go. We found ourselves staying the Rock Bar (named because the area is decorated with Coral Rocks) until around 10.30 when Simone finished then we'd move down to the Jetty Bar (beautiful bar over the sea) where there was music playing until around mid night. There was also other entertainment happening in the Jetty including an amazing local Dance group putting on a show and also a local Acrobatic group who didn't fail to amaze with their skills.

In the daytime we spent most of our time by the beautiful pool which is salt water but is only actually 30 paces from the sea! Again the staff here were totally amazing! The service you receive is off the scale to anything i had ever experienced before. For lunch you can choose to eat in the Pavilion Restaurant or use the Poolside bar and restaurant. Here you can get sandwiches, burgers or Pasta and ICE CREAM! all included in the All Inclusive deal.

The management team of the resort are mostly Italian, apart from the General Manager who is from Milton Keynes. They checked in with us most days to make sure we were having the best time possible. Guilia and Luca are a married couple that seem to run the resort on a daily basis. They couldnt have been kinder, they work long hours but absolutely love their job so nothing is too much for them.

The rest of the staff on the resort from the grounds men, the Maids/Cleaners, the bar staff, the waiters and the recreation team are all truly amazing! To list a few...... Robert (Smiley Bob) and his sidekick Charles (Charlie) on the Pool Bar, Farida Waitress, Nivot Bar Manager, Abel, Barman, Maisy Recreation Team, Joyce Reception Waitress, Doctor Restaurant bookings, Yohanna Poolside Restaurant I could go on and on!

When you go here, (and you really should! It will stay with you forever!) when you arrive you are used to doing everything at a hundred miles an hour. For the first couple of days the staff will keep repeating "Puli Puli" which means Slowly Slowly and "Hakuna Matatta" which means No Worries and you won't get it but after the first few days when you get to Africa speed you will be totally absorbed. The people of Zanzibar have very little themselves but want to give you everything. In other resorts I have experienced staff that are programmed to be nice but underneath you can tell they dont believe it themselves. At this resort, they are trained to do their job but the love and attention to detail to everything is just in them. The happier and nicer you are to the staff, the more they can give you back.

I left this resort with lots of new friends who I will stay in touch with for many years.

Finally, within the La Gemma Resort is a secret other luxury resort called The Star of the East. It is entered through a viewing tower that stands in the middle of the resort. This place is totally beyond anything I have ever seen. Guilia invited us to have a look whilst we were walking around the resort taking photos. Please check it out if you want to look at another level of luxury.

To top off our stay, on the last night we were invited to dine in the private dining room of the Star of the East resort by the management team. This is an Ala Carte restaurant that is only usually for the patrons of the exclusive resort. It was a 4 course luxury menu. When we arrived we were greeted by the Bar Man. Ah! Mr Barry and Ms Amy, Jambo! (Hello) Welcome to Star of the East. Would you like a drink? Whilst we were at the amazingly beautiful bar, the General Manager, Andrew came to see us for a chat and to find out how our stay had been. His open and very friendly approach made us feel so welcome and special. We told him how amazing his team had been and that they were truly inspirational. He told us of how they treat the staff, they are fed, clothed and treated very well which is why they are so happy. The food totally blew us away.

Now just a note on the grounds of this amazing resort. It is truly like a botanical garden. It is manicured to the highest level with a vast array of different Flora and Fauna from all over the world and is awash with amazing photo opportunities. There are security guards all over the resort, they truly were not needed but its nice to know you are safe. It is an international resort with guests from all over the world. Occasionally there is the odd powercut. The most this lasted was about 2 minutes before the on site emergency generators kick in (which you are not aware of, its only because we wondered down a path that we discovered them)

There are many trips you can go on during your stay for very reasonable prices. We decided only to go to the Capital Stone Town so we could visit markets etc which was quite an experience. We did also learn the history if Zanzibar which is very sad due to its links with Slavery but it is a must so that you can help understand their culture and see how far they have come.

This is only half of what we experienced, i cannot write enough words to explain everything. If you want to experience Africa in a safe, happy environment you really should try Zanzibar! It is truly the destination of a life time.

Ashanti Sana (Thank you) for listening

Visited for a week from 10 to 17 May 2014 and was delighted with the experience.
Even though 2 of the restaurants were closed for refurbishment, the main restaurant provided a diverse range of high quality meals, enough to cater for our needs. Waiters were friendly and very efficient and tended to our every need.
Stayed in a deluxe suite with a sea view which was very clean and comfortable.
Scuba diving was good albeit a bit pricey and the dive centre was very accommodating and ensured good diving and snorkelling experiences.
The beach is clean and easily accessible with nearby reefs which catered for our own unguided snorkelling activities. Great pool with superb bar, snack and towel services.
Overall, a fantastic trip that met and even exceeded all our expectations. Well recommended.

This hotel had one of the loveliest beaches access to sea all day due to the clever design.
We picked the wrong month to stay as April is the wettest month but it really didn't impact our holiday. It was quiet but perked up over the easter weekend, however due to going off season I was a bit peeves that 2 of out all inc restaurants were closed so we didn't actually have much choice regarding where to eat.
Friday nights Swahili night was the best. We had some lovely ladies serving us in the main hall .
Reception messed up our transfer pick up which eventually got sorted but I had to chase everyday which I think should not have to be the case. They should be actively trying to adders the problem.

Regarding rooms, yes lovely but perhaps but not great my phone didn't work the whole week despite reporting it first day.

Having said the above I would stay again, the children's entertainer sharif was a huge it with my kids.
In summary , lovely hotel, really mixed international crowd which is good.
