“wonderful honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

spent 4 nights here - it was awesome journey to heaven
blue sea, palms, canopies on the beach funny entertainment at pool area, romantic breakfasts, candles at night - so it was just perfect
we asked for my favorite white gowns and they delivered 2 for us within 20 minutes
just be careful - walking under the sun for 10 min on the beach caused a lot of problems with my skin, so 50+ cream - must have for everyone

Wonderful setting, beatiful rooms. personal treatment by extremely helpful and friendly staff. Hubby had his bed decorate "Happy Birthday" with bougainvilla petals. A cake and sparkling wine was complemantary. We shared the cake with cleaners and gardeners, but saved the bubbly for ourself. Highly recommended.

We were here back in 2007 after a safari in the northern part of Tanzania and remembered it as a brilliant place, so after a safari in the south we returned to this hotel, and are very happy we did so. Rooms are large enough, bathroom is good, and you don't go here to stay in your room anyway.

Breackfast is a large buffet with lots of choice, only the selection of cold-cuts is limited. In an Italian managed hotel I would expect some salami, mortadella, prociutto etc. Lunch and diner buffet in the main restaurant are as good as you can expect from a buffet, with a pasta station and a grill with fresh tuna or snapper. If you take your time between the courses (soup, salad, main course and dessert) you can easily spend 2 hours dining, just very relaxed.

Lunch at the pool is good with a choice of burgers, sandwitches, salads and pasta, and small snacks are available throughout the day. In the evening it changes to the Coral-Cove pizza restaurant wich I found was very good. Delicious tuna-carpaccio and nicely spiced pizza diavolo. Allthough the pizza place is included, they say you need reservation. When we were there, only 2 or 3 tables were used and I really don't understand why not more people used it.

On fryday the dinner is in the African Village with all the buffets outside, so you can have dinner walking barefeet in the sand. The other restaurants, which are not included, we didn't try. Absolutely no need for that. In general I would say the food is the best you can get in an all-inclusive hotel.

Drinks are good and plentyful. You get your beer in a bottle and wine in a normal glass, and not in a thimble like some other all-in hotels. Waiters are good and service is quickly. If anyone complains that he couldn't get enough drinks, that is really his own fault.

There is a gym with some outdated and ram-shackle equipment, but as it is in the open air, you don't need to work very hard to loose some sweat in these temperatures.

The coffee bar, where you can smoke the water pipe is a nice experience. The sunset bar is mostly quite empty, this may be caused by the sometimes really irritating music. Some nights there is a band, and the atmosphere brightens up immediately.

When you want to do an excursion, call a local tour operator (like Madeira Tours, and there are much more) and don't book at the hotel. A tour to prison island will cost you $ 100 each at the hotel, and $ 65 with Madeira. And it's the same tour.

We used the spa once, and had a hot-stone massage. Was quite good and not overpriced, but beware the stones are really very hot.

The only real downside of this hotel are the very frequent short power cuts. They appear several times a day for a few seconds. And every time you have to start the AC in your room by hand. For the rest it is one of the best places to relax anywhere.

My wife and I went there to celebrate our 10 years wedding anniversary. This resort really delivered against our highest expectations. The resort is well integrated in the environment and you really have the feeling to be in a tropical paradise but with all comfort at hand.
So for sure top rating on my side.
Specific strengths:
wonderful beach with white sand and super clean see. Easy access in all tides conditions (which is different from other locations in Zanzibar on the east coast)
Quality and variety of food. Always available grilled fish, meat, chicken, pasta, rice, vegetables and fruits. Good variety day to day
Cleanliness. Overall super-clean. Both the rooms and everywhere in the resort. Not only , all gardens and infrastructure were kept at top class standard
Weather. We went for one week at october end. This is low season and not the driest. However in the morning was mostly cloudy (3 days on 7) and in three occasions we had 15 min rain. While in the afternoon was always sunny. Temperature was always in the 30 degrees range. The big advantage of the low season was that the resort was just a bit more than half full. Giving really a feeling of quietness and higher attention from waiters.
Diving excursion. A must do is to go to Mnemba either for diving or snorkelling. Where you can see all you can dream of. While the excursion to Tumbatu was definitely a lower standard (mostly corals and few fishes).
Excursions. Very interesting the visit to local fishing village and giant sea turtles. Also nice the visit to a local farm. Going to Stonetown should be a must-see, but it was not worth in my view. In prison island you can just see giant earth turtles.
Surveillance. The beach is physically separated from the sea. You need stairs to access into the sea in high tides. However in low tides, down the stairs you have still 10 meters to the water. And durning these periods, local boys walk the beach to sell their souvenirs. This did not bother us at all because they are not allowed to stop and standstill. They normally greet you but if you do not want to buy, they just walk over. That's mainly because of the few guards always present at the stairs.
Personnel. Kindness and friendliness were at the highest standard.
African bar. Very nice, you can just relax and taste their good variety of coffee or tea while smoking the arghile' (water pipe).
All inclusive is really all... Beyond bier and cold drinks, even several alcoholic drinks at the bar like Martini or daily cocktails are included. You will need to pay for whiskey or so. Or if you really want your preferred brand of wine. Different from other resorts. You need to pay separately as almost everywhere the excursions, diving, spa and if you want the separate fish restaurant to eat lobster.
And now a couple of watch out's
Boutique. The range of offer is very limited even of local stuff. And it is amazingly expensive. As result it is always empty. We just walked in once to understand that it was better to buy whatever in Stonetown.
Beach side close to diving centre was noisy... Their machine to refill oxygen bottles for diving was noisy and constantly on till early afternoon. I hope they will replace it with something more quiet. For us, it was not an issue because there was always more than enough space on the other side close to swimming pool. But in high season i guess this will not be possible.
We did not use the Spa.

We visited Diamonds La Gemma for a 10 night stay...........and what a fabulous choice we made..................without doubt this hotel is in a beautiful location.......on a superb beachfront setting......with amazing gardens/grounds.
Our room was set within the gardens just in front of the sunset walk, with a view of the sea......................amazing
Food was of a good standard and the staff always willing to give a helping hand. We didnt have any touble with mosquitos, but we still took our tablets and had a plug in our room.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit Zanzibar.

ARRIVAL: After an impressive drive way rich in colours (bourgainvilla) we were very warmly greeted by Paolo and seated in a large thatched, open building (which also serves as one of the bars on site and is also a centre for booking tours etc) for an efficient check in while we sipped our refreshing drink and freshened up with the statutory towel provided. My request for a full sea view room was taken into consideration together with my mobility problems. Many thanks to Paolo for his help. A golf cart took us to our room.
ROOM: Please note that the accommodation is tiered in three levels. Level 3 in my opinion has uninterrupted views of the sea and the hotel grounds. It is closer to the main dining room and the reception areas. I have mobility problems and the walk to the dining area from Room 302 was not a problem. Level I is closer to the beach and the hotel pier. Golf cart assistance is available from all levels - simply call reception and they will oblige.
The room is large and comfortable with easy chairs and ample storage space. Tea making facility, television and mini bar stocked with soft drinks and beer. Netted, large bed (good quality linen and duvet) which was decked daily with flowers. Fairly large, marbled bathroom with a walk in shower and bidet. Good quality toiletries. Quality of towels depended from day to day.
Although Zanzibar uses the three pin plug this hotel caters for two pin plugs. Reception kindly provided us with an an adaptor. The air conditioning is quiet and effective and overall a very good sleep quality was enjoyed.
The sliding doors open out to a patio area, grass lawn balcony with beautiful floral bushes. Trellis dividers between rooms near the patio area. Otherwise it is one huge balcony - impressive. The views and in particular of sunset are breathtaking.
The room was spotless and welcoming with the exception of the shower - there was a thick layer of unsightly mold where the door glides on the bottom track. This was quietly pointed out to the room maid who took prompt action and spent an hour cleaning the area. Many thanks.
The main dining room is arranged in two sections: the enclosed area is air conditioned and this area leads to a large, open thatched dome structure with good views of the sea and the gardens. Smoking and non smoking areas in the latter. Surprisingly for an all inclusive the quality of food is good and the wine (South African) reasonable.
All meals are buffet style although drinks and beverages are served at the table. There was a very good choice at breakfast: fresh fruits, juices (unfortunately not fresh), variety of continental and local breads, cereals, waffles and pancakes, omelettes, cold meats, cheeses, sausages, beans etc.....Excellent coffee. Lunch and dinner catered for all palates and this is one of the few hotels where vegetarians needs are fully met. A huge selection of salads, meats (duck, chicken, pork, beef, lamb), fish (fresh catch of the day fillets such as tuna and sword fish, prawns, octopus, squid), fresh fruits and truly a large selection of desserts. Dishes ranged from pasta, osso bucco, rissotto, roasts, stews to curries, including local swahili dishes (Zanzibar mix, pilau, samosas, ugali, cassava, plantains etc). oN Fridays the hotel hosts an African night and more local dishes and drinks are on offer.
Snacks and drinks are available at the poolside. With the exception of icecream we found the quality of 'set' lunch served here to be mediocre. Inn the evening this area serves as the pizza restaurant for which a reservation has to be made. We did not try the Seafood restaurant but the feedback from fellow guests was positive.
All the bars and cafes serve good quality drinks and for special brands there is an additional cost. Make sure to sample the cocktail of the day.
In addition to the visits and tours to Zanzibar town, the hotel provides a range of sporting facilities, Swahili lessons, lessons in playing Bao (a local game of strategy and musical entertainment in the evening or just simply chilling on the pier in the Sunset bar or the shisha bar....
Avoid booking trips and excursions via individual hotel staff who may approach you. We were offered a village visit (to include car,the Mnarini turtle conservation, Nungwi village, basket making, boat building, fishing village) at 120 dollars per person which I declined as it was too steep for us. The same excursion arranged via the Mnarini conservation group cost 30 dollars. Whereas I am not in the business of penny pinching the unrealistic pricing did not inspire confidence.
The free wifi connection is excellent and we were lucky to have connection in our room as well. Telephone calls within Tanzania are not charged. Much appreciated.
Stunning, stunning......We took the golf cart to familiarise ourselves with the layout of the sprawling gardens before spending time each day covering a section. The gardens have been very tastefully designed and landscaped with an amazing collection of tropical plants and trees.Truly spectacular, bursting with colours. The gardens attract a variety of beautiful tropical birds. The whole is exceptionally well maintained by a dedicated team of ground staff. Do pack mosquito repellent particularly for use in the evening.
There are two beaches! Yep. At the 'base' of the hotel near the pool a beach has been created with palm trees and other tropical plants. This area is raked and cleaned every day. Good quality loungers under makuti (thatched) umbrellas or palm trees. Again the quality of the towels varied from day to day. Hakuna matata. At various points wooden steps lead down to the beach proper and what a beach! Sheer bliss to take an early morning walk on white, powdery, clean sand. Early morning turn to the right (if facing the sea) - delightful walk and the coral formation rock face is stunning. The sea is most inviting - warm, crystal clear and very calm. It is possible to swim even at low tide. Unlike the east of the island where sea urchins abound this side of Nungwi is relatively free of them. However, one guest who was walking out towards the sea at very low tide unfortunately walked on on and it wasn't pleasant. Several guests had reef sandals/shoes - a good idea if you can pack a pair.
If you continue walking on the left you will come across a few beach stalls selling the usual holiday gifts. A word of warning - on seeing your 'bracelet' (all guests have to wear one!) the price will increase from 10 dollars to 100! Buy in Zanzibar town or in the hotel shop or be ready to bargain...
The whole area is patrolled by security guards and we were always at ease especially walking on the clean beach early in the morning (evening walks are not advisable.)
All staff from groundsmen to management were most unintrusive but helpful and courteous. The management team are most visible and even have their meals with the guests. Each departmental head (housekeeping, kitchen, entertainment etc) made contact and always enquired if things were fine. Quick service was exerienced eg a replacement bulb, golf cart assistance.
Attitude of waiters and waitresses varied. If tipped on a daily basis they went the extra mile. We always prefer to show appreciation at the end of a stay and were not so well looked after on the beach or in the bars. Small dollar bills will come in handy. There are no ATMs in the area. Reception will change our money only in Tanzanian shillings.
Our thanks to all staff for making our stay so memorable and in particular to Paolo (Trainee manager) who looked after us so well, to Agatha, Miriam, Ally and Naina (restaurant) and to Chef Babbu who made us a very special, exquisite and delicious Zanzibari dish 'samaki wakupaka' with coconut rice on our last day.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on Level 3.

My family took a mid-term holiday and chose Zanzibar as a destination..with many hotels and resorts to chose from a family friend suggested Diamond La Gemma. What a place the landscape is beautifully appointed, the trees and the location makes this one of the top 10 resorts, the rooms are cleaned on a daily basis, the furniture is modern, with a full board package, lovely food and drinks are unlimited the entire day, oh yes the staff and the people of Zanzibar should be friendliest people I have seen, truly the spirit of Hakuna matata!! Is cherished....

Jambo! Zanzibar
