“Amazing!!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2011

Having just returned from Zanzibar will leave lasting memories for me for a long time to come. Check in went smoothly. Was a little rushed which we didnt mind since we were rushing to make it in time for lunch. We stayed in the deluxe room, which was nice. Only problem was that the house lady never replaced the hand towels everyday even after been told too. Excellent view of the pool area and the beach. In my view the deluxe room was excellent, closer to the beach. The villas were closer to the resturant. The location of the hotel was excellent. Never had to be concerned about the low tide(like @ Dreams of Zanzibar). Snorkeling at the beach was excellent, lot of fish. Beach boys were not that bad. There is security on the beach as well. We used Max and Raul to do the Safari Blue and Prison Island. These 2 trip were the best! The jetty was awesome to watch the sunset over a couple of sundowners. And also every night there was entertainment there. The staff was efficient, although slow...but as they say Hakuna Matata :-) nothing is rushed there. There is a swim up bar at the pool side. And during lunch time, there was no need to go all the way to the main resturant for lunch, you could choose to have lunch by the pool bar area. They served burgers, pasta, sandwiches, fish, etc. For Dinner you could choose the pizzeria or the main resturant, both were all inclusive. The was also the Sea Breeze resturant, which was exclusive, We did not try that, cos we had so much off lobster, crayfish(sea gull), prawns and calmari on the safari blue and prison island. There is also a seesha lounge which was nice and also was all inclusive. Having taken a boat trip along the beach, it was evident that La Gemma was the best looking hotel from all along that stretch of the beach.

Room Tip: Excellent hotel to choose....

We stayed here for 1 week after a Tanzanian safari (like most people we met!!). We booked through Pure Zanzibar, who also arranged our transfers for us as the hotel is 1hr north from the main airport.

We were picked up in a nice clean car, provided with water and flannels, and driven (briskly but safely) to La Gemma. Drinks provided on arrival and swift check in, before taken by golf buggy to our room. Our room was lovely and clean, and had fresh flower arrangments scattered around the room. We were on the upper level, furthest from the beach but closer to the restaurant.

We left small tips every day for the housemaids and had different flower arrangements daily. We did next to nothing for our time there, apart from one excursion to Prison Island to see the giant tortoises, arranged through the hotel.

All the other times we just laid by the pool or beach ready our books or dozing - no problems with beach boys and security guides patrol the beach, and it is on an upper level away from the shore.

We were AI so went to the main restuarant for breakfast and dinner and also most lunches. Food selection was good and although some things were repeated there was enough selection for it not to matter. Water and local beers were included in the AI, plus also the African night on Friday nights.

We ate one night at the pizza restaurant wihich is inlcuded in the AI but you are asked to book - no need really as we were the only ones there!! Had drinks at the sunset restaurant a few nights and was very quiet.

Didn't use the spa or gym area (why would you - you are on holiday!!)

Yes there were a few occasions when the electricity went off but nothing to prevent us having a great, relaxing time.

Diamonds Gemma dell Este…Where should I start ?
I had read all reviews about this hotel; posted here, and I really don’t understand how some have rated it as bad, or worse, as awful…If paradise exists, then here’s where you can find it.
We arrived in the morning and were warmly greeted with a fruit punch and wet towels to refresh ourselves after the long flight+transfer from the airport (approx. 1hour drive). Check-in was done with within 20minutes and we were brought to our room. Our room (215) was big, Zanzibar stylishly furnished, clean and decorated with flowers all over. It had a small private terrace overlooking the ocean. Simply a perfect start !
The hotel’s premises are beautifully arranged, blossoming flowers all over. The beach is simply perfectly sandy and white and the waters are crystal clear. The pool is big and has a nice bar with tons of different drinks/snacks on the menu;
We were on a All Inclusive formula and I’ve never experienced such a complete offer. Even the mini bar in the room is included and refilled every day. We mostly ate at the main restaurant (Pavillon), but for my birthday, we ate out at the Sea breeze restaurant on the pontoon (not included – European prices). The food is excellent, and for seafood lovers it’s just great! On the pontoon, you also have the main bar and a shisha+coffee corner (Moresco café –included in the AI formula). On Friday night, an African dinner is served at the “African village”, a restaurant set up on the beach, were the buffet is again great and Masai dancers offer a typical African touch.
The staff is extremely professional. They are all very friendly, attentive and caring, turning your holiday into an amazing experience. If you make the fun effort of learning some Kiswahili, their faces light up with surprise and a smile and you maybe get even more attention!
As far as excursions are concerned, they can easily and without fear be organized via the beach boys, who hang out behind the palisades on the beach (behind the watersports/scubadiving club). We hired a car+driver for the day forUS $125 and went down to Kizimkasi to swimm with the dolphins. On the way back to the hotel, we visited the illegal slave chambers on Mangapwani beach. With the hotel, we did the “Blue safari”. Check it out, it’s great. Island hopping, lobster bbq on the beach and mangrove swimming. We also did a few dives with the hotel’s scuba club.
I could go on more and more with complimenting this hotel, but the best advice I could give you is “Go there and enjoy African hospitality in paradise!”
The only critic I could make is the fact that the pool is filled with treated sea water which is a bid unusual for me. After enquiring, it turns out that the reason is being eco-friendly, as source water is difficult and expensive to get on an island. Makes sense, and in no way affected our holiday.
If Management reads this review, I’d like to end by saying “Asante sana na kwaheri”. We’ll be back next year!

We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights in February, and we thought that overall it was an excellent place to stay, to relax and unwind after our safari in Tanzania.

The food was great, with lots of choice, fresh salads, fresh fish, meats, pasta - everything that you would expect to see from an All Inclusive Buffet restaurant. The food wasn't repeatitive as it can be in these hotels... There are a few alternatives too, the Sea Breeze restaurant on the Terrace which serves beautiful a la carte fish dishes (the biggest prawns you've ever seen!) while you look down to the sea beneath you which is also full of fish! The Sea Breeze restaurant and the Beach Grill are chargeable, but another alternative is the Pizza restaurant which you are required to book, but is in with the All Inclusive Package and makes a nice change.

We stayed in a deluxe room, which was lovely and spacious with a minibar filled with drinks that are also inclusive. All of the rooms face out to the sea and have patio doors with a garden area outside so you can watch the gorgeous sunset every evening.

The entertainment was quite low key, but to be expected - we generally went to the terrace bar and watched the band play a few nights a week, and maybe play a bit of pool or table football! They had an african themed night one night during the week and they also have a 'chill out' lounge also on the terrace where you take off your shoes, lounge on the sofa with some coffee smoking some fruity Shisha!

As previously mentioned, they do have problems with the electricity supply, which generally didn't bother me - but every time it conks out (which is usually only for a matter of seconds) but it turns off your air conditioning and also makes a loud clunking noise - which gets quite frustrating during the night!

But that's really the only thing that I could complain about - the staff on the whole are extremely friendly - reception staff may come accross slightly aloof, but they are willing to help... eventually!

I would also mention that excursions on Tanzania are not always the most structured and organised, so just bear that in mind - as they are quite often expensive for what you actually end up getting out of it. My advice would be to relax, soak up the sun, have a swim and just enjoy the break!

We booked La Gemma as a package deal (we don't normally do this) for a quick week away leaving from Cape Town. We got a very good deal, leaving from Joburg, and Zanzibar is a relatively close island to visit from South Africa (circa 4.5 hours flight). The staff at La Gemma were outsanding and friendly. The resort is pretty huge and beaches lovely. It was an all inclusive deal - the food in the main restaurant was good, and the pizzas at the beach bar were excellent! We spent most of our time in the pool, whoops the booze is included in the price so the pool bar was a help. The only negative we have about the resort was the actual guests themselves. Lots of older couples many of whom were pretty unfriendly. I'm not sure I'd recommend this as a honeymoon destination if you're looking for fun and a vibe at night, as there isn't really any (well there wasn't when we were there). The staff are super friendly, so all in all a good stay. Be warned, it gets VERY humid and rains a little /cloudy in October time.

Committed to write a short review when completing satisfaction reports for hotel because of negative comments in 'Rough Guide' - sort of mentally promised to do what I could to redress a 'blot on the landscape' review.

This hotel is modern, sensitive to it's location, eco-friendly, planned, spacious and an utter delight to visit. There !!

It is 'all inclusive' and you don't have to move - but a trip or two out is highly rewarding as it sets the hotel in a very particular caring, open culture - and the two complement each other.

All plants are labelled, menus are varied, potential is limitless for enjoyment and staff are a joy.

We 'crashed out' after an eight day safari and it was highly 'fit for purpose'.

We arrived at Le Gemma after a weeks stay and safari in Kenya.

First impressions of Zanzibar airport… not good! It was about 7pm when we arrived and therefore dark. After we got our suitcases we walked out to find our transfer and it was quite intimidating. Not much lighting and lots of locals trying to get a tip by ‘helping’ with your suitcase. Fortunately, we found our Kuoni representative who quickly escorted us to his car.
It is about an hours drive to L’Gemma which takes you through the local villages which are pretty interesting.

The first thing that struck my about the drive into the hotel is the security. All cars have to pass two security barriers to get into the resort which made me feel really safe.

When we arrived we were met by a lovely girl from reception who gave us a drink and took us into the lobby bar to explain to us how the resort works. There is quite a lot to take in! She then arranged for porters on the buggy to take us to our room.

As it was our honeymoon we splashed out and booked a suite so I thought the room would be nice, but WOW! I couldn’t believe how amazing the room was. Gigantic lounge area with a big dining room table, two sofa’s and a flat screen TV. There was also a little kitchenette with various tea’s, coffee’s etc…

The separate bedroom was also huge with a gorgeous comfy bed and a mosquito net which surrounded. My only complaint was that they gave us two single duvets on a big double bed…. On our honeymoon…!

The room also contained a stocked fridge with beer, water, cola and fanta and as well as a few biscuits and Bombay mix.

The bathroom was modern with a robe and slippers provided and lots of amazing free toiletries.

The resort itself is just breathtaking. It is stunning and so well maintained. The beach is just what every paradise daydream looks like and the sea is warm.

The sunbathing and pool area leads directly onto the beach so you have the choice of the pool or sea to cool down. Given that the sea was so close I didn’t think I would use the pool, however it is a seriously good pool! So warm!

There is also a pool snack bar for drinks and food during the day – the ice cream was amazing!

The food at Le Gemma had some highlights and a few ‘ish’ moments. The main buffet was generally great but I did wish that they wouldn’t pander so much to our European tastes. It’s a good idea to have a few ‘fall back’ options for less adventures eaters but I would have preferred more local dishes. (Previous to arriving in Zanzibar we were in Kenya and the hotels and lodges had many more interesting curry dishes to try)
Saying that, the food from the buffet was always tasty and I always found something I liked.

A stand out meal for us was at the sea breeze restaurant which as honeymooners, we actually got for free. The food here was outstanding as was the service. (Although we were the only one’s in there!)

We also ate at the pizzeria which was also nice. (Not amazing but nice)

We didn’t eat at the beach grill as I thought the charges were extortionate. (Around 30 Euro for a main course)

The food downside for me was the snack bar at the pool in the day. We really aren’t picky eaters and will eat most things but we really didn’t like it on the two occasions we ate there. It confused me as it really is basic food being served (club sandwiches, cheese and tomato toastie’s, burgers etc…) but it really was bad. Very dry and no flavor. Again, perhaps a mistake for the hotel to try and cater to European tastes?

We were AI and for the drinks, it was the best AI I have ever been to. Great cocktails and very generous measures! It was also lovely to have a choice of wine that was poured to you at the table.

The hotel put on an African night every Friday which was absolutely great with some very interesting food and entertainment from a local tribe.

Le Gemma is without doubt a premium hotel and the staff are clearly trained to treat their customers in this manner. However for us, it did lead to certain ‘stiffness’ about the hotel. However this could be more to do with the clientele it attracts rather than the hotel itself!
In the evenings the hotel does try. There was a singer or a band on every night and the bars really are wonderful. However, we found there to be very little atmosphere.

All in all, we loved Le Gemma for what it was. A 5*, high end resort for us to have some R&R and spend some time in beautiful surroundings. However, if you are looking for a bit more entertainment in the evenings, this might not be the place for you.
