“Ultimate luxury in the best beach in Zanzibar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

We stayed at Star of the East for 4 nights. Definitely one of the most incredible hotel experiences we've ever had - not to mention the most luxurious! The 11 exclusive villas are all massive and have their own private sea view terrace and plunge pool. Everything is meticulously designed for comfort and utmost luxury.

The four course meals at the 5* exclusive restaurants were delicious and offered impressive variety. The all inclusive wine selection was also excellent, particularly given how difficult it is to get good wine in East Africa. And for ultimate privacy you can choose to have meals served on your private terrace!

The best thing about the place is the service. A personal butler is on call 24 hours a day to cater for your every need. All the butlers we had were great but a particular shout out to Abdallah, who was charming and warm as well as extremely efficient! In fact all the staff were really friendly and very professional - a fair few notches above anywhere else we've been in East Africa.

And finally, Nungwi is the only beach in Zanzibar which is great for swimming regardless of whether it's high or low tide.

Overall, definitely the place to go when you're looking for a trip of a lifetime.

One of the most luxurious and well designed villa I have ever stayed at.

Running a 5 star resort in a remote part of the world has its challenges and this property has overcome these challenges and proven it as a well managed true luxury resort.

Everything from food, bathroom amenities, service were truly excellent. The resort manager Sabine was one of the best resort managers I have ever experienced.

Pros:
- Private section of the beach for diamond star guests
- Exclusive restaurant for diamond star guests
- Villas are private and luxurious
- Plush & relaxing

Cons
- Unreliable/ weak wifi signal.

I highly recommend this hotel.

Special thanks to our main butler (Salim) who for religious beliefs could not stick around when my wife wanted to unwind and let her hair down. However, he did manage to always be there within a moments notice.
The villas are an architectural marvel.
Food was top notch.
Customer service was awesome. We were basically spoiled during our entire stay.
All in all the best resort in Zanzibar.

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Zanzibar and can honestly say, we could very happily have stayed there forever – we were there for 9 nights and would find it very difficult to knock it!

Our villa was very spacious and every detail had been considered, it was perfect. There was everything you could possibly need for relaxation in the sun by your own private plunge pool, in the shade on the most comfortable lounger or inside the villa in the cool of the air conditioning with a wonderful view or one of two huge plasma tv’s. That's not to mention the exclusive pool area for villa guests, the main pool and private beach area for villa guest!

The staff, they were just amazing! From Sabine in Guest Relations to our 24 hour Butlers Nassor and Hemza who catered to our every need. Our housekeeper Mosi created beautiful floral creations in the room every day, something which may seem very small, but really, the devil is most definitely in the detail.

While the villa’s offer in room dining we did venture out a few evenings and I have to say, we had great experiences. The Sea Breeze Restaurant which is located on stilts over the ocean is a 'must' for dinner particularly if you like seafood. The Pavilion offered buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner which we also enjoyed on occasion simply for an alternative to 4 course fine dining experiences. The Ocean Blue Restaurant was nice but we found the menu to be limited particularly as it seemed to be the same as the in rooming dining menu. Having said that, the staff were great Martin in Ocean Blue Restaurant and Fabian in the Restaurant's Bar we funny and friendly, the Bar was also well stocked with top shelf branded spirits which were all included within the package – so who can complain?!

Not sure we will ever better this holiday, it’ll be tough but we will continue to search!

Definitely the most luxurious bungalow in which I had the opportunity to stay. Tastefully furnished large room, hall with gushing water, walk-in wardrobe, large bathroom, a nice outdoor shower, cooling pool (no, not swim in it, but is fine), huge patio with several options for cozy relaxation.

The staff is very helpful, excuse small errors, because you see a sincere effort and good management by manager Sabina. Excellent food, served in a private patio, exceptional seafood dinner in RESTAURANT above the Indian Ocean (try the lobster and king prawns with wasabi). A hearty breakfast is the African tropical fruits, rice porridge with coconut, beef in a delicious banana sauce with two kinds of potatoes and octopus soup.

Beach, where you can just staying out of Diamond Star Of The East is a great, great swimming, privacy and comfort.

I recommend everyone who likes to grant the quality services, sleek interior, gastronomy and adventure truly relaxing holiday. The environment is discrete, although we were a male couple, itself never had a problem with it.

This hotel is one of the best I've stayed in ever. My boyfriend and I went for five days -- i wanted to cry when we were leaving. The staff is EXTREMELY professional. THe manager of the hotel - Sabine is amazing and handles everything very professionally. Our room was something out of architechtural digest magazine -- HUGE, with living area, personal jacuzzi, outdoor shower, also a personal butler service. Wonderful laundry service as well! Room was decorated romantically in flowers everyday. This is the definition of a 5 star hotel.

There is no getting away from the fact that this is truly a five star hotel. The food was wonderful, the villas are huge and the services on offer are immense. To top it off it is set in a stunning location and is as close to paradise as you can ever get.

Having said all this, there are a number of things that you may want to keep in mind before you arrive. The "butlers", as nice as they are, rarely leave you alone. A number of times when we left the resort to explore the island we were greeted with such questions on our return as "where have you been?" or "why would you want to leave?" or "we've been looking for you". There is a constant undertone that you are being carefully watched, not for sinister purposes but to ensure that should you squeeze out a bead of sweat from your temple, someone will be on hand with a cool towel and a bottle of water before it gets to your chin.

Sadly it would also seem that the hotel does not, despite visitors paying (justifiably) enormous sums to stay at the hotel, pay its staff the minimum wage. This is actually the norm in Zanzibar and the mainland, but it means that butlers and service staff are always trying to do "extras" for you. My wife believed this was out of pure kindness but I suspect it was always to look for a tip and can add to a certain claustraphobic feeling which is ironic given the secluded nature of the resort.

The hotel does not employ Zanzibaris but rather people from the mainland. The reason, the staff say, is that locals reject the tourist boom in the island and because of their religion are not comfortable with bikini clad women and free flowing alcohol. This is categorically not true. We spoke to a number of Zanzibaris who would relish the opportunity to work in a place like Star of the East. I suspect the employment of mainlanders has come about through an agreement between the owners and the politicians in an attempt to smooth over some of the cracks in the union, though it would appear it is just making things worse.

Finally there was a corporate party that visited the sister hotel (Gemma Dell'Est - which is within the same complex) during our stay. We were forewarned about this and the hotel provided a wonderful evening at the Stars of the East restaurant so that they could use our beach for an event. This was all fine. However, the next evening, we were walking along the beach and to our horror found it littered with beer bottle tops and cigarette buds. Even after informing the manager we were still picking stuff out of the sand a few days later. Equally on the last day of our honeymoon the party were allowed to play dance music at full blast from their beach, which is immediately adjacent, and totally spoiled the serenity of our last day. I would advise not to vist Stars of the East if there is a corporate party on at Gemma Dell'Est.

These are just points to bear in mind but overall it was a fantastic holiday, with fantastic staff in a breathtaking setting.
