We chose Baobab as the position was said to be the best (in the north of the island) as it suffers less when there is low tide and i can confirm this. The position of the village was fantastic, we have just gotten married and wanted a quick honeymoon while awaiting the real one in the new year. We upgraded to a delux room (no.63 - the best position i think) which had a great position, full side sea view (there are no sea front views), great wooden terrace. what i liked about the whole village is it's use of natural materials (common yes to africa - however if you walk along the beachfront there are some very modern resorts with sliding patio doors!!?). the sand is amazing, talcumn powder! water is lovely - just like the postcards.
Coming back to the village, with very little they could really perk up the place, i have to admit, we got there exhausted from 6 months wedding planning so we didn't want to do anything or do any trips - however, i guess if you arrive a bit more relaxed, there is in fact little going on. No mid morning snacks or late afternoon crepes to create 'social' moments.
Africa does tend to have little animation in the evenings and this was the same - i did appreciate the karaoke night, quite funny and also the quiz which did in fact greate a nice social atmosphere. The food... um.. next question! I am not an italian who wants to eat italian abroad, however, i did have problems. Breakfast needs to be greatly improved! It's the first meal of the day.. with a gorgeous view.. so it's got to be great food. I must warn about the mosquitos at lunch time.. it is a problem and i am quite fussy about these things (so if you are like me.. be prepared) - they say that being outdoors (under an enormous bamboo structure) the mosquitos come - i can't believe there isn't a solution. Ho hum...
We didn't do an excursions so i can't advise, but this time round, as opposed to kenya, i wouldn't have wanted to do anything with the Beach boys - they hassled just a tad too much and i had heard a little too many negative stories of people doing trips with them.
We paid a really good price for the soft all inclusive so I must say that it is difficult to complain, however in peak season, with the prices that can be found, if you don't book a delux (which gives you a very large room and bathroom) then.. yes i think i can understand a few of the complaints. all in all for us in went well and was a good trade off, in low season (october 2012) at a really good price.
There are no particular services like a gym, room service or anything else. Nothing in the bathrooms (nice soaps or stuff) so definitely no fringe benefits. One thing was a shame: we had asked for the best delux because it was our honeymoon and not even bowl of fruit was in the room when we arrived - absolutely no evidence whatsoever that they paid attention to the individual guests (especially when there were no more than 50!).
Sometimes so little effort, can make sure a big difference!
However the beach is absolutely stunning as is the water, view, sunsets and long romantic walks!
