Hi All , well my wife and i along with another couple tackled our second fishing trip to Gamefish Lodge in April 2014 , this time we fished three days of Pemba Island and one day of Zanzibar.
We started planing this trip with Colin and Les the day we left in December and thankfully all went according to plan with the help of Colin and Les , it was the first time i had stayed at Gamefish Lodge and let me tell you this special , private , place i will not forget we had the whole lodge to ourselves and the accommodation is all and more that one needs it is really comfortable and you can seriously make yourself at home! the food we were served was unbeatable it was just fantastic (see photos i attach).
Back to the fishing , we left on our second day to Pemba and landed our first fish about 20 minutes out of the lodge 22kg and a 37kg Dorado!! this Pemba trip is really special but NOT for people that are physically disadvantaged and is NOT one for folks whom want luxuries this is a true fishing experience were 90% of your time is spent fishing and the rest you will be sleeping!! we did not see another charter boat, ship , etc for 3 days only the local fisherman so this place is unspoilt and is unbelievably beautiful , you will stay on a tiny island with no inhabitants and eat the fish you catch , the fishing was quite tough at times due to the weather and a bit of sea weed in the water but at the end of the day we landed and lost some fantastic TROPHY fish and we caught a variety of species to Dorado, tuna, barracuda, wahoo etc etc and broke the womans record with a 43kg wahoo , the snorkelling is great too! The fishing around Zanzibar can not be compared to Pemba but was still good and we managed to land some fish on the last day thankfully to the knowledge of our skipper(small fish Colin!!)
This is a true fishing safari in some of the best fishing grounds left in the world which gives you a chance to land a true trophy fish!

Thank you once again to Les and Colin for your hospitality and see you again in November for round 3!!

Regards Gareth and Klaudia Roest.

My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of staying at Game Fish Lodge for the best part of two weeks over Christmas and New Year. The owners Colin and Lesley were incredibly hospitable and couldn’t do enough to make our stay relaxed and enjoyable. Game Fish Lodge is not a five star hotel, and what it may not have in glitz it more than makes up for in friendliness and charm. From the beginning to the end of our stay Colin and Lesley were always willing to advise and help us as we arranged walks, trips or activities around Nungwi or further afield. It’s clear how much they are personally devoted to making their guests feel at home and ensuring they have a pleasurable holiday.

A special mention also has to go to the food which was consistently excellent. From the crepes with fresh fruit followed by eggs for breakfast, to the terrific dinners which proved that quality and quantity can go together. Unsurprisingly dinners were largely fish, but the freshness, quality and variety of it meant that this was no hardship. The seafood platter was a standout highlight – so good we had it twice! Neither time did we managed to finish it, but the leftovers were still a treat the next day.

As we say in Aberdeen – “Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again – Bon Accord!”.

Beautiful Zanzibar, beautiful Game Fish Lodge! I stayed in this lodge for Christmas holidays, unfortunately only for 4 nights, but I would stay for all the time long.
The location is in the north of the island, that is perfect, as you are not carried by the tide, as in the south. There are four simple and clean bungalows in front of the fantastic blue sea and lots of space to stay relaxed on the beach or if you want read a book you can stay in the dining zone where you can have a drink anytime of the day and night.
The owners are a super hospitable couple, Lesley (is a perfect cooker) and Colin (fisherman with fresh fish every day). We stayed only 4 days, but became friends immediately, spending time together after dinner by chatting to discover the Zanzibar secrets, that noboday could know, if is not living there and also going to beach parties all togheter!
I really suggest this location to everybody and hope you will confirm my opinion one day!
Francesca

I went to game Fish Lodge this december with 2 friends of mine and the result was really overexpected!! We couldn't ask more. We stayed there 4 days and, without doubts, it has been the best place we stayed in. The structure is nice and familiar, bungalows are simple and clean and the show you have in front of your eyes every morning when you open the door is amazing. The sea in that part of the island is really fantastic. Beside the structure, I must absolutely write two words about the owners, Colin and Lesley. They are great!! They made our stay perfect (not only when we were in their structure but even when we changed the hotel, they keept on taking care about us). Perfect owners but perfect friends too. You are a guest but you feel at home!!! Another thing is sure: if you are on a diet maybe it's better not to go there.I will never forget Lesley pancakes and the amazing fish that Colin cooked for us every evening. One day we will come back.... it's a promise. Laura

My husband and I stayed at Game Fish Lodge in November and met fellow reviewers JudtihandGeoff (lovely couple) so seeing their review inspired me to get my finger out and post ours.

We stayed at the lodge for five days with the main aim of fishing for my husband. We booked a five night/three day fishing package which included our meals except lunch. The price was very good value when compared to the amount charged just for fishing tours locally.

Colin and Lesley are real characters and chat and joke around with the guests. We enjoyed this as we are used to staying in small personally run places but this is not a place for people who prefer anonymous service. Lesley is absolutely lovely and cannot do enough for you. Colin jokes around and political discussions can get heated. As well as chatting with us we relaxed by the bar they drove us out for after dinner drinks at local bars on two nights. At the end of our stay we felt more like friends than guests.

My husband fished one day around Zanzibar and caught fish but found it was, as Colin said, suffering for the overfishing. So for the second and third days he and Colin went to Pemba for an overnight trip. On this trip he caught numerous big fish including Tuna and Wahoo. He had Marlin on the line a couple of times but didn't manage to land them. My husband is very sociable and got on well with Colin during the long days (and night) on the boat. Although he is an experienced fisherman he had not fished in this way before. Colin guided him and taught him the techniques required to catch the big game fish. My husband's only suggestion for improvement would be to fish as "catch and release" once the boat is filled to capacity with fish.

I spent most of my time at the lodge while my husband fished. The rooms are simple but clean, we had hot and cold water and electricity all the time. There are fans but no A/C. There are mosquito nets and both room spray and insect repellent is provided. We did not get bitten or see any bugs (I have a bug phobia which Lesley was very sympathetic to) There are only four rooms and when fishing guests are staying there are usually no other guests so you have the place to yourself. The deck and bar area overlooking the beach was perfect for days chilling out reading and dozing.

The food was fantastic, we ate freshly caught fish most nights and while my husband was on Pemba Lesley cooked me a fantastic curry. Portions are huge so you will not go hungry.

After our stay we met up with Lesley in Stonetown where she helped us to buy spices at local rates instead of tourist rates. Nothing was too much trouble for Colin and Lesley.

BUT do not stay here if you are looking for anonymous luxury accommodation. This is not what is offered here and you risk disappointment. There are plenty of fancier hotels nearby if that is what you are looking for. If you love fishing or are looking for simple laid back accommodation then Game Fish Lodge is the place for you.

My wife and i were fortunate enough to meet Colin and Les in Zanzibar after chating over the phone from SA about a possibility of going game fishing , i had spent a lot of time researching various fishing charters on the island and to be honest Colin was the only one that was straight and did not want to take my deposit before i had arrived! we did not stay at Game Fish Lodge but did go and visit the lodge to discuss our fishing plans, from the start everything was open cards and honest , being a professional guide myself let me tell you this is often hard to find!!!!!!
Our day was booked and we set out to sea with a very professional fisherman with very professional equipment , we were advised by Colin to head to Pemba for a night due to the fact that the fishing was better there but chose not to so we focused around Zanzibar , it was a lovely calm day and all the odds were in our favour and managed to land and loose some great fish due to my incompetence with the rod in my hand!!! Colin is a very experienced fishing guide and will put a fish on the boat with any client experienced or not , he is a great coach and has a lot of patience and passion for fishing.
I could clearly see the impact the uncontrolled netting is having near and around Zanzibar but let me tell you there are still some big fish in these waters you just have to work a little harder for them , for those of you whom are serious about fishing and are willing to work and put the time in for a trophy fish and not be spoon fed or worry about the luxuries of the Hilton Hotel in down town New York this is a charter for you , it is true game fishing in some of the finest waters in the world!!!!! I have rebooked for 7 days with Game Fish Lodge in April and will certainly give another review.

Finally i would once again like to thank Colin and Les for their hospitality and help with other activities around the island you made our stay really easy and enjoyable.

Great to have new friends like yourselves!!!See you in April!!!

Best regards
Gareth and Klaudia.

Our stay at the Game Fish Lodge was truly amazing. Colin and Leslie do such a wonderful job making you feel welcome. You really feel at home - and what a home! The beach is very pretty to look at, however be aware of sea urchins so make sure you bring your water shoes.
And of course it s a paradise for any keen fisherman. They are very knowledgable and passionate about fishing and will easily pass on this passion to any guests.
The food was extremely good and prepared with love.
We look forward to going back =)
