“ORA BLUE WAS JUST FANTASTIC! Dear Denise you are a bit "gâté" I would say...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

I would just recommend it to everybody, we enjoyed a beautiful 7 nights staying, people very nice and friendly, the animation was just perfect for those who want a relaxing holidays, food was very good (true a bit repetitive but who cares if it is good? I would recommend more swahili dinners :)). The sunsets were amazing and the beach white and perfect. With the excursions organized by the hotel it is possible to visit beautiful places all over the Island. Rooms were clean and nice (chère Denise c'est l'Afrique... pas la Suisse..).

A big hello to all the animation team, to the Masai (Simone Mangiapolenta, Matteo il piccolo, Matteo il Grande) and to Ally (our super waiter).

ps. The beach boys were a bit annoying but it is part of the local folklore :)

Room Tip: Stay away from the bar if you want to go to bed before midnight :)

“Excellent Beach Medium Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

My wife and I were staying at the hotel for two nights.
Good things: nice pool, good food and great beach.
Bad things: Rooms need renovation especially in the shower.
In-room safe broken ,though we asked several times for them to fix The safe, they promised to fixed the safe, but actually have not done anything which was pretty annoying.

“It's true - some rooms stink badly”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

After reading such mixed reviews I had low expectations of this hotel. We often travel on a budget and are genuinely not very fussy so we decided to overlook the more critical ones. Also my husband grew up in East Africa so we were not expecting super luxury by any means.

The resort itself is quite nice. Pretty pool and beach and the local staff are lovely (as they are everywhere in Tanzania). However our room was just awful - the shower kept leaking badly, which stank really horribly and attracted hordes of mosquitos. The grouting was thick with blue mould. It sounds trivial but it made me feel constantly grimy. We asked reception to move us twice and both times they sent a maintenance man to our room who was unable to do anything. The room was dark and smelly and the management had zero interest in our complaint, even though I offered twice to pay more money for a better room. I was told no better rooms were available but when I checked their website there certainly seemed to be. (Ground floor rooms by the pool area - where we were - seem to be the worst.)

As most reviews say, the food is pretty crap. 5 mins walk along the beach are two or three quite nice little bars that do reasonable food though and we were very pleased to find them, even though we'd paid half board at the hotel.

We stayed for the 5 nights we had pre-paid for and then moved to the hotel next door (Sunset Beach - Veraclub.) for our final 4 days. It was fantastic - lovely, big clean rooms with large verandas, a really spacious resort with great food and the nicest and most helpful staff and management imaginable. It was only a wee bit more expensive as well.

If the management respond to this post saying they tried to do something about our room, it's complete nonsense. We dislike confrontation and so were just seen as the sort of guests who could be palmed off with a stinking room.

Room Tip: Try to avoid a room and the first floor, especially by the pool area.

“Not what we expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

We booked this hotel because we wanted some luxery in Zanzibar after our tours through Kenya and Tanzania. The lobby is beautifull with the wooden kano in the middle and the garden is also very nice. Lovely white sand beach and it is even possible to snorkle and see some nice fishes. We had a bed&breakfast facility which was good. We asked the manager on arrivel what the cost for dinner would be and they would charge us €25,- per person per evening without the drinks and on the beach we had candle light dinners including drinks for € 20,- for the 2 of us. So it is not necassery at all to book the all inclusive package. The staff is very friendly and they are trying their best, to make your stay pleasant. The beach boys around the hotels are very relaxed. What we didn't like was the following: the room that they booked for us smelt like mold/moist. At first we thought well we are going to stay here for a few nights so it wouldn't be a problem but later we thought we booked a 4* accomodation and for that we would like to have a room that didn't smell like mold/moist. We went to the reception and explained that we would like to have another room. At first the person behind the reception wasn't very helpfull at all. We asked him if he had called the manager after we waited for 20 minutes and he sayed yes but we didn't here any phone rinning (incoming and outcoming) and there was nobody coming to the reception. My boyfriend who then got a bit anoyed went back to the reception and forced the person behind the reception to call the manager, after that the manger came in 5 minutes. We explained our complaints to the manager and he informed us that he would take a look and see what he could do. The manager said to us that they would clean the room again and that the odour from mold/moist would go away. We said the room was clean and we just want a room that didn't had the smell from mold/moist. After we waited for 15 minutes we got a new room that smelt less so we where very happy whit that. The room wasn't properly cleaned and needed some maintance but since we didn't have the moist oudor everything was good for us.

What we also didn't like from this 4* hotel is that they didn't provide any water on the rooms. The staff can speak Italian very good but are very poor with English. The breakfast was good, you have a lot of choice but what we didn't like is that it is possible to smoke in the restaurant and somepeople even smoke cigars while others were still eating.

TIP: before you want to explore Zanzibar make sure that you go to an ATM at Stone Town because it is very difficult to find an ATM in one of the villages and if you find one in the villages they will charge you 10% from every transaction that you will make.

“we had a wonderful time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

We spent a week at the hotel, it was our honeymoon. The hotel is not new and the rooms have a faint smell of seaweed. But, however we got a great attitude from all the staff and especially from a guy in charge of the rooms named Pradeep. The staff did everything in his power to make our vacation perfect, including to change our room and give us a great room facing the sea. All Our request answered immediately. The food was delicious and fresh. Stunning beach.
The hotel is populated mostly with Italians and there are many activities for Italians , we did not mind about that, although we do not understand a word in Italian.
It's not the best hotel I was in - but it's a pleasant hotel with excellent staff and a real desire of the staff to help you with everything.
I would recommend the hotel managers to improve the wireless Internet connection and allow guests to connect to the wi-fi from the rooms too and not just from the lobby. in addition, the breakfast was always the same which is a bit boring. But other than that - we had a great vacation and Pradeep Thanks for everything, you are a great manager and a great person.
