“Warm welcome from the start Jambo Jambo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

A beautiful hotel right on the beach, small and exotic, just like Zanzibar. Breakfast was one the best buffets I have enjoyed. The hot selection had different potatoes dishes each day and there was also a hot vegetarian medley. The staff were all very lovely and happy to help. There are plenty of places to eat and drink along the beach, for the best Zanzibar curry head for 'The Nungwi Inn Restuarant' about 50 meters along the beach, sit at a table on the beach with a tilly lamp to read the menu by...we took US dollars but we could have exchaned our notes easily enough at the hotel next door (meters away along with shops) a good exchange rates.

Room Tip: If you don't like stairs then pick a lower floor room, power failures do happen, thats why there...

We upgraded our room to the ocean cottage, it had a beautiful view just felt the room had a layer of grime all over it. we had real trouble with hot water, power went out frequently (but I guess that is typical to the island) the wireless very seldom worked while we were there, they have computers to use but they are dinosaurs and have issues from the constant power outages.

My biggest frustration was the fact I felt we were nickeled and dimed for everything, it is $60 each way transfer to the airport and when I asked for someone to help me confirm my flight they said sure but is it $1 per minute. Kidding me?

My next biggest frustration was the beach, although it was beautiful, this section of the island had so many hagglers. We could not walk down the beach or lay on the beach without constantly being approached. I have been to tons of beaches where hagglers are present and these by far are the worst.

I had read mixed reviews about The Z Hotel on Trip Advisor, but I felt the photos did the place more justice than any other hotels in that area.
Our arrival to the hotel was lovely. We were shown around the property, given a welcome drink and made comfortable near the poolside until our room was ready. The room was lovely but I do not feel worth the amount we paid for it.
The infinity pool was overlooking the sea which was nice. One of the best things about the hotel is its location and accessibility to the beach. You are right there.
Downsides - the power was out in our hotel about 40% of the day/night. Rolling power cuts at all hours of the day and night. We were warned of this but it became a little annoying when you are sitting at dinner in pitch black until there generators kick in. Sometimes they wouldn't. What makes it worse is the fact that you look down the beach to the other hotels, all with power....
The service at the hotel was fine, but get use to the fact that it will take you a minimum of 1 hour to see food on your table after you have ordered. And it takes 20-30 mins for anyone to come take your order. So my husband would just walk over to someone and order to prevent us from getting grumpy about the wait. We didn't want to get grumpy on our honeymoon afterall!
Another word of advise, order a 2nd drink as soon as your first one comes so you actually get it within an acceptable time.
I guess to cut a long story short, the hotel is lovely but I do not believe worth the amount of money we paid. If it was half the price I would have been ok with it I think.
Food was ok, just takes too long (my husband did get food poisoning on the last day though from the bacon wrapped beef). Swimming pool is small but set against a lovely back drop. Wouldn't stay here again though. I did overhear a few people complaining about their lack of sleep due to the loud nightclubs near by. We didn't have this problem in our room though.

We stayed at this place for 5 nights, and we had a fantasic time!!

Location is great, with nearby restaurants in the area, nice beaches and friendly staff.

The food was great, the pool was nice, and so was the beach.

Would definitely recommend it!!!

Room Tip: for best view, book the cottages!

We had an excellent stay in the Z Hotel in Febuary .Very friendly clean and the bed was comfortable.Food was better than average too.Sometimes in the evening this was eaten in the dark as Zanzibar is cursed with frequent power cuts but the Z coped well.Having been in the parks in Tanzania beforehand the five days that we had in the Z were most welcome.A great experience.

This is probably one of the nicest hotels in Nungwi. From the welcome hot towel to wipe off the hour plus journey from Stone Town to the amazing view of the infinity pool and beach, Z Hotel is so nice you almost don't expect it in a remote island location like Zanzibar. Z Hotel is very clean and the staff is very helpful. Breakfast is really good as well. And the views are amazing! While other beaches are underwater during high tide, this hotel has enough of a beach that you can always step out onto it. Internet is unreliable, so don't expect too much from your internet connection. But it's free to guests, which is nice. Sunsets are breathtaking!

Room Tip: The higher the room the better the view. But anywhere is within a few steps from the pool and beach...

Recently spent two nights at The Z Hotel in Zanzibar and loved it! Just came off a week in northern Tanzania in the parks, and finished in Zanzibar to unwind before heading home to Canada. We spent one night at the Amaan Bungalows and decided we had to upgrade for our last two nights and what an excellent choice we made in choosing the 'Z'!

From the moment we checked in, we were greeted with refreshing damp washcloths and mimosas for our tour of the facilities. The service was very friendly and kind, and the personal attention from management was wonderful and unexpected. The design of the hotel and the beautiful rooms are both top notch, and the surrounding restaurants are the best part of the Nungwi beach strip by far.

There are a few negative issues that should certainly be addressed, but keep in mind that these arent necessarily the fault of the hotel itself, just things to consider in a visit to Nungwi in general (hence the 5 star review, with an asterisk!). The flies. The flies were absolutely horrid! Kudos to the hotel for providing fans on each table at the breakfast bar to try and keep the flies at bay, but upstairs in the open-air restaurant at midday, the flies are absolutely atrocious. This isnt just the Z Hotel, but consistent throughout Nungwi... However it would be nice if there was something the hotel could do about it. I'm not sure how or what that might be, but something. It was impossible to relax in the sun/shade of the pool deck during the day without at least 10 flies buzzing around and landing on you. This was definitely a major negative, and while one cannot necessarily fault the hotel for something inherent to the island, it would be nice if efforts were made in the future. It really ruins what should be a relaxing afternoon at the pool. At least by the evening/night the flies do go away though!

Also, while The Z Hotel occupies the prime central area of the Nungwi beach area, there are some issues here as well. The restaurants, shops, and location of the hotel are top notch, but unfortunately there are many many people on the beach trying to sell bogus trinkets, tours, souvenirs, and even marajuana to passers-by. They can be quite aggressive in harassing tourists, which is really unfortunate. There is a little corner-shop type store next to the hotel to purchase snacks and bottled water, but it is very intimidating to approach when there is always a gang of 5-10 people sitting on the steps harassing people and trying to sell drugs. Again, this isnt the fault of the hotel, but it significantly detracts from the atmosphere. One shouldnt have to feel intimidated and uncomfortable on their stay in paradise! Hopefully in the future some efforts can be made to address this. There are security guards for the hotel-proper, however, and the compound itself feels very safe and secure.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience with The Z Hotel and of all the places in Nungwi this is far and away the most pleasant, beautiful place to stay. The service is unmatched, the hotel and rooms are stunning, and we are thrilled with the time we spent at the 'Z'. Just be aware of the flies in the ointment (pun intended) of what would otherwise be paradise. These are things that need to be considered if you're coming to Zanzibar in general... It is far from perfect, but the Z Hotel is as close to perfect as you can get given the context. T.I.A. afterall...

Great service, great food, great design, great facilities, great management, great room, great beach, great stay... With an asterisk. Cheers!

Room Tip: Pony-up for the sea-view rooms, they are stunning.
