“A very interesting place to stay and see the animals in a historical site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I greatly enjoyed my stay at the Ark. It is a site with a lot of history from many years ago when colonial powers were roaming Africa! There is a beautiful water hole just by the hotel and you can have a very close view of animals from the comfort of the well protected veranda. There is also a room at the pond level with glass windows were you can see the animals very close and personal. Food was good and a walk on the walkway bridge was a great way to see a lot of birds and smaller wildlife. The night discussion about the lodge and animal by the lodge staff in front of the fireplace was a very nice ending to our stay. I highly recommend a visit to this lodge.

Nice experience to see the animals and birds come in turns to drink water from the waterhole. It is something you will not forget in a lifetime. Elephants, different type of deers, Buffaloes, Hyena, birds of different species et al. Say a herd of buffaloes keep away a Hyena for almost one hour. Elephants rule by size and when they come, rest of them have to make way. Did not spot Lepoards or Rhinos on the night we stayed.

The hotel room was small but no complaints. Bed was okay. The furnishing is comfortable. Most of all you want to watch the animals more and the room gave a good view.

Restaurant was very good and served Indian food too.

Tip- Be early and reach by 4 pm. As you have to check out by next day 7 am. Also, Plan to make it on the first day of your visit. It makes more wow to see the animals than post doing other game drives. This can be a good reception to the drives.

Room Tip: Take rooms nearer to the hole on the lowest level. You get better views.

Only 3 reviews for this place? what a tragedy! This is one of the most unique lodges I've ever stayed at! You don't come here for luxury, first class accomodations. If that's your thing forget about this place whlie knowing you're missing an incredible opportunity to view animals in their natural settings. The watering hole is magnet for all sorts of wildlife such as elephants, water buffalo, rhinos, leopards, warthogs, impala, a huge variety of birds. It's hours of entertainment really because you can look away from the watering hole for 5 minutes and turn your head back and see an entirely new scene infront of your eyes. At one point we saw two bulls (male elephants) tussling outside the window as we were eating dinner in the dining hall. What you'll see is unpredictable. The night we were there we saw a family of 18 elephants emerge out of the fog like ghosts at around dawn - watching them interact with each other, the greetings, the change in the atmosphere when the big daddy bull made his entrance from the other side of the watering hole, the kindness all of them showed the babies, it was breathtaking, and you're so close to it from the decks and bunker beneath with no windows - it seemed I could reach out and touch them at certain points. Their is one particular naturalist here who was incredible - he has a bit of a stutter, very sweet, big guy and if you let him know how interested you are in seeing the animals he'll seek you out as new animals arrive. He knows every bird, every sound every animal makes, he can attract the spotted genet cat over with a raw egg, a bush baby with some food, and he gets genuinley excited when he sees these animals (even though he's seen them a million times!) - I just loved him and I loved this place - if anything very rare arrives at the watering hole (keep in mind these animals are mostly active at night) they'll ring a bell that goes off in your room to let you know - certain rings mean certain animals are there so you can pick and choose what to get up for. It's a great system. They also have an afternoon bird feeding on the "bridge" that allows you to get some great shots with your camera. I should also say the food is excellent at the dining hall. I really just love this place, what they are doing, and how they do it and the staff was amazing. This is one of those places and experiences that will live in your memories forever. One night is enough - amazing place - don't miss!

Think of a little wooden lodge at the edge of a watering hole in the middle of a forest. Now add to it the comforts of a three-star, with cosy rooms, buffet meals, fantastic open as well as enclosed viewing galleries from where you can spot a diverse array of wildlife 24/7 and you have The Ark at Nyeri, in the Aberdare national Park, Kenya. My husband and I loved the concept and enjoyed the experience.
Some tips/thoughts for would-be visitors...
* You are instructed to leave your large bags behind and carry only the bare essentials for an overnight trip. We did just that but were dismayed to see other travellers being allowed to take large suitcases with them. I felt that was unfair, especially when I missed my moisturiser and shampoo. They should enforce rules or then not make them.
* On the way to and from The Ark, you should make sure that you get inside the mini-bus quickly, else you will have to sit on uncomfortable makeshift seats in the aisle as we had to.
* There's coffee in the lounge through the night so that you can stay alert to see the animals.
* The small rooms have no locks, so it's best not to carry any valuables, especially jewellery, etc. Camera equipment is unavoidable, but try and keep it on you.
* Every room has an alarm installed, which goes off when the big game arrive at the watering hold that The Ark faces. It CAN be turned off if you want to get a good night's sleep!
* We enjoyed the thrill of rushing to the hide to get a good view of the wild elephants, hyenas, water buffalo, etc, up close.
* Since the flush in the room didn't work as well as it should, we had to resort to using the common loos which were much better equipped.
* A very cute wild cat comes to the stairs outside the lounge for dinner every night. She is given a large dish of meat and a runny egg and it was really fun to watch her darting here and there as she gobbled up the food delicately.
* The staff kept trying to get us to extend our stay there, saying that one night is nothing. Since our holiday was pre-booked, that made us feel dissatisfied and unhapppy, when in reality, the one night was a lot of fun.

Very informative and helpful staff. You can ask them any questions about wild life animals. While we were on our way leaving the ark, thanks for the experience staff and driver to spot the leopard. About the facility, except you can get hot water for bathing in peak hours, I have nothing to complain. And the restaurant is nice.
