“THE place to stay in Wanaka!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2009

We searched the internet for a place to stay which had all we would need, at a reasonable price, after a long day of skiing. We chose Wanaka Edge Suites and were not disappointed.
It is clean, comfortable and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for the new owner, Trevor. We were given an upgrade to two bedrooms (and two TVs) which was wonderful, travelling with a teenager. The position was quiet and peaceful, being away from the main road. At night, if we didn't feel like cooking in our apartment, it was an easy stroll in to town for dinner. With a spa and sauna, and large lockers for all the ski gear, we had everything we needed. We had a wonderful stay. Thank you.

A lovely, modern apartment with courtyard and spacious living area. The facilities were excellent: super modern and stylish. The new management were very friendly and welcoming and the location doesn't have a view but is only a 10 minute stroll into town. Spa was great after a day on the slopes, and ski lockers and parking was convenient.

We were upgraded to a 2 bedroom apartment, which meant we received ample space for the both of us. We were given a tour of the apartment by the enthusiastic receptionist (owner?) - the apartment came complete with a nice double sized bed with heated bedding, heated bathroom (heater + bathroom floor heating), washing machine and dryer (BYO washing powder), very well equipped kitchen facilities (microwave, stove to cook, tons of pots and pans, a huge array of cooking utensils), a dvd player and a private court yard which was more than sufficient for a 1 night stay. In fact it felt so much like home, we went to town to buy a dvd and food to cook for a night in. The downside definitely, is the location of the place. It is not lake front (far from it) and is about a 3-5 minutes drive from town centre) and therefore not very accessible if you are looking to do many things in town. However the place does try very hard to make up for the location, or the lack thereof through the service and room facilities. And for the facilities that they provide, if they were located lakefront, you would probably have to pay an arm and a leg for the room.

After looking through many places to stay in wanaka in our lonely planet and in our AA book, we found this qualmark approved hotel/suites.

Wanaka was one of our favourite places in New Zealand and these apartments were perfect for us.

They were extremely clean, and modern with lots of space. Price was reasonable and the staff were friendly.

We even used the spa, small but great fun and very relaxing.

This is a warning to anyone who wants reliable accommodation. Our experience with Wanaka Edge was very disappointing. We were trying to find accommodation for New Years Eve, in Wanaka - a difficult task at the best of times. Having seen availability online for Wanaka Edge, we called to confirm this was indeed the case. After being quoted three different prices by two different people on the phone (for the same room), we eventually were able to book a two bedroom suite for two nights. This process had been quite strange, and it very seriously felt like we had been forced to barter for our accommodation. However we hoped it was just a strange anomaly and booked anyway, making other plans and reservations accordingly.

However, we were telephoned back on the day we were to check-in, to be told our accommodation was no longer available due to a computer malfunction. This was after we had already given our credit card details and made other plans in Wanaka. The person from Wanaka Edge was very unhelpful and could not offer any alternative accommodation options. It was obvious Wanaka Edge were shopping around to get the best rates they could for New Years Eve. That telephone conversation was quite unpleasant and the Wanaka Edge representatives (again we spoke to 2 different people) were abrupt and rude. This was the reverse to our experience with locals and tourist operators in NZ, who were generally overly friendly and helpful!

We had an amazing time on the South island in New Zealand, Wanaka Edge was really an exception as a standout disappointment.

And yes, the other reviews are right - as we saw where it was located - there are no views, it is a longer walk into town via the main road and the apartments themselves appeared concrete and barren from the outside.

On the other hand, Wanaka is a very picturesque little town. Luckily, we ended up with a pleasant experience elsewhere!

The units are on the small side and our two bedroom unit only had one bathroom, which made things a little challenging. But they are neat, well equiped and stylish. Staff was very friendly and went out of their way to help us.

As long as you're not going to be spending lots of time in the room, this is a great place to stay.

Wanaka edge was our second accomodation in the South Island after Peppers.

First impression - it looked rather small and cramped from the outside. Carpark was just right in front of our doorsteps and sheltered, which made it easy for us to move our luggage from the car to the apartment. We were given an upgrade from a one bedroom to a two bedroom and our apartment was huge!

The patio was nice and creates a relaxing feel. Kitchen was clean and the living area looked stylish. One main concern was that there was no air conditioning so we had to open the windows to allow for ventilation.

The bathroom was big and seemed to be equiped for the disabled. The shower curtains came down only midway to the floor and this caused water from the bathroom to leak to the living room. The carpet in front of the bathroom in our living room was drenched after our showers.

Other than the two points raised above, we do find it a comfortable stay.

  • Disliked — Lack of air conditioning
