“Nice, clean and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2011

I stayed there for only one night because the hostel was fully booked for the next day but I would have stayed longer if possible. The staff is really friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and spacious enough and the beds are comfortable. I think there are only three bathrooms for the whole hostel but I guess it's enough since I didn't have to wait very long to have a shower. The bathroom was surprisingly clean knowing the number of people who had used it that night. The place is a bit noisy in the evening but it settles later at night. The hostel is well situated, close enough to all the restaurants and the lake (Wanaka is not a huge anyway). So all in all a very nice stay, I would definitely stay there again.

Holly's backpackers is a snug lodge two streets from the center of town.

Everyone was friendly and there was a strong chilled and laid back culture.
The family running the lodge were very friendly and helpful. On days when we weren't skiing they advised us on different activities near the town.
The place was clean and nothing was stolen from anyone while we were there. People felt comfortable casually leaving there phones and laptops out without concern.
Average age was from 20-35.

Cons -no free internet

Nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there

I was traveling with a friend and we stayed for 2 nights in a twin room. It´s not a big place so not for the partying crowd. Nice common room with TV and lots of magazines. The kitchen wasn´t the cleaniest but more due to the travelers who didn´t bother cleaning after themselves. Good location right in town close to the lake.
Make sure to hike to Mount Iron (about 45min one way) for amazing views!!
Staff was helpful with giving direction, etc.

This is the best hostel of my trip to NZ. The staff I met was nice and friendly.
The twin room I stayed was fine too. It was quiet since there was only me and my son and another backpacker. The living room was large and clean, as with the kitchen.

Holly’s Backpackers is a friendly place and looks more like a big family house, a home away from home type set-up, which is rather typical of BBH affiliated hostels. There are no bus crowds and we met guests of all ages from all walks of life. The dominant age bracket seemed to be 25-35, and the atmosphere is best described as genuine, friendly and fun.

We stayed in a 4-bed dorm room that featured two bunk beds, which were perfectly fine - not wonky, noisy or uncomfortable like many a dreaded bunk. The room was quite big, giving guests ample space for lots of luggage. The room also had an open, built-in wardrobe and extra cabinets for storage, which was very handy.

Everything was very clean, from rooms to bathrooms to kitchen and living room. The latter was really cosy, with several sofas, rugs, tables, a TV and many DVDs to choose from. The bathrooms were very spacious and the showers just divine (lots of hot water and great water pressure). Making dinner at rush hour was not a problem as there is lots of space in the huge kitchen, which was very well equipped. Holly’s further has a nice outdoor area, complete with a nice garden, featuring a clothes line and several tables and benches to sit down at and eat your dinner or read your book.

The guys at the reception were very friendly, helpful and social and actually interacted with guests.

Location-wise we couldn't have chosen better as the hostel is just a few blocks away from the lake promenade, in a quiet street, just a short walk away from shops and the supermarket.

All in all, this seemed like a very well-run, well-maintained place in capable hands. We couldn’t have picked a nicer hostel, and I would stay there again any time.

I stayed three nights at Holly's. They pride themselves on being a "home away from home", and it's true it's quite a homy sort of hostel. Mostly because it's only got one dorm, the rest are twin rooms etc.

The dorm is a bit cramped, 8 beds and when I was there, they were all full. Full of snorers annoyingly! And no options for a female only dorm. The room was tidy and clean though, and had a sink. The bathrooms were also clean, and rather large which is always good.

The common areas (kitchen, living room, veranda) were also fine. The hostel is nicely situated, it's a quiet street but very close to the center and to a New World supermarket : )

The service was very good, it's a family owned and run hostel, and someone is always there to give you good local advice for hikes, activities etc.

All in all, a decent place for a few day's rest and exploration of Mount Aspiring National Park, which deserves its name!
