Twizel and Mackenzie hotel were a complete let down, but we went across the road to Poppies cafe to have the best meal and value for money that we had in our trip to NZ,the ambiance could be better, but not the food or service(i had the lamb cutlets!!! perfect)

“Unfulfilled promise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2013

This restaurant has an interesting menu and we ate there one evening on this basis. The starter of pan fried prawns in batter was delicious, but the main courses were disappointing - the lamb rack was tough (and this is the land of New Zealand lamb!!!) and the fish of the day had too many competing flavours, all of which completely overshadowed the subtle flavour of the fish. Overall expensive for the quality.

“A diamond in the dust”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2013

We had read the great reviews of Poppies on Trip Advisor and we weren't disappointed! Who knew that such a lovely restaurant would be in a small regional town? My daughter had a beautifully cooked piece of salmon which was actually an entree but adequate enough for a main meal, while I had the beef bourguignon pie which was filling and delectable and was very welcoming on a chilly night. Great coffee too. While not cheap and the menu not extensive, the food and service at Poppies is five star and we found the friendly wait staff a refreshing change after other experiences in New Zealand of indifferent customer service.
