“A very warm welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2012

Our stay started with the most wonderful friendly welcome from Jim and Mary. It was really like staying with friends of friends, such lovely people. The house is very well designed, with a large open living space downstairs, with a laundry off this if you need it. The bedrooms are upstairs, ours was large with a beautiful bathroom. Jim and Mary were great about finding out what we were interested in, and pointed us towards a pretty walk by the river, and a great restaurant in town. We got back to find Mary and Jim just finishing dinner with a couple of the other guests, we wished we had stayed there for dinner because it smelt delicious! Lovely relaxed breakfast with some of the other guests. We were sent on to our next destination with great directions and some delicious home made biscuits.
One of the nicest places we stayed on our trip with the best hosts we have ever met.

Situated on a quiet road on the edge of Twizel, the lodge is an ideal place to view and visit Mount Cook. Mary and Jim were perfect hosts, providing a wonderful meal with local salmon (delivered to the door in the nick of time) and lively conversation. They made our one night stay as memorable as it could possibly be and Mary gave us some of her delicious Anzac biscuits as we departed.

This was a lovely homestay, hosted by a lovely couple, Jim and Mary.
The breakfast was truly awesome and we were made to feel completely at home.

The only negative point about our stay, was the lack of tea and coffee making facilities in the room. I need a cup of tea on waking and sometimes in the night and whilst Jim and Mary offered us total access to their kitchen, it was somewhat daunting at my age to negotiate two flights of tiled stairs either at night or in the morning and return carrying two cups of whatever.A small point but I should imagine there are many others of my age, who have become used to the easy access to morning cuppa prior to showering and starting the day. The lack of a TV in the room posed no problem as we were invited to watch the house TV in the house lounge.

Room Tip: We were shown 2 rooms and when we opted for one, were told that was a little more expensive due to b...

Thank for the helpful comments.
Moths are a feature of Twizel for the summer months and guests are routinely advised to close their windows while lights are on at night. A tea tray would have been provided on request. Nightlights are being installed in bathrooms and tea making facilities on the upper floor will be available shortly.

Mary and Jim are remarkable, thoughtful and caring hosts, and their lodge is ideal -- comfortable, charming and a perfect place from which to visit magnificant Mount Cook and the surrounding area. Everything about our four-night stay was lovely -- most of all, perhaps, was meeting and getting to know Mary and Jim. I will long remember our wonderful dinner conversations at the end of the memorable days we spent there.

Everything, from booking arrangements, arrival, accommodation, and exit services were wonderful.

Our hosts, Mary and Jim, were friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome, and they can provide great guidance and service.

The clean, spacious and comfortable accomodation were offered with good value for money, which make this a genuine highly rated accommodation option.

it is out of question that the Lodge is located in a very peaceful and quite place with remarcable landscapes and surroundings . But nothing compares with the hospitality of our hostess Mary and Jim. They were extremly kind and nice and they made real that we felt totally at home by staying there. We will not forget it!

Really well appointed (the Retreat) rooms with all you could want. The rooms were serviced every day and the welcome was really good. Only thing which let it down was the WiFi reception in the Retreat - I assume all other rooms have good access. Shops and restaurants are a short drive away

Room Tip: If you want to use the internet - stay in the main house not the retreat until they install a repeat...
