These detached A-frame chalets are of differing sizes depending on the price and numbers of guests staying. We had a 3-room (bedroom/lounge-diner/bathroom) chalet No23, on Wairepo Road. The chalet was extremely well-equipped with a full-size cooker and microwave, iron and hairdrier. The bathroom was large, well-lit from a Velux window. Spacious shower enclosure with good control, but the bathroom was not equipped with a fan so the mirror tended to mist over a lot.
Bedroom was very roomy (sleeps 3) and individual bedside touch-sensitive lamps were provided which were a delight to use.
Lounge was comfortable but the lighting was rather basic with no 'ambient' lighting, the main light being in the apex of the ceiling making it rather spartan in appearance.
Cleanliness was exemplary, great care being taken to achieve the very best presentation to each new guest.
The charge for the (not-very-good) wi-fi was rather irritating and a small increase in the room rate instead (making the wifi free) would be a welcome development. NZ$6 for 2 hours seemed rather steep considering the quality of service offered.
Car-washing was available adjacent to chalet 10, a 'brush on a hose' which was a quite unexpected touch and actually quite useful!
Both the lounge and bedroom had A/C, so this place is quite suitable for a summer stay.

Comfortable detached A-frame chalets, well situated for the Twizel (pronounced TWY-ZEL) township and access to the base of Mount Cook. At around NZ$105 directly from the motel, these are a bargain. It's 3 minutes to shopping, cafe's pubs etc and a very leisurely one hour drive to the base of Mt Cook.

A friendly fuss-free check-in, and ample parking right outside your door.
Comfortable bed, ample room cooling/heating as required. Useful kitchenette, and plenty of hot water from the shower. The TV channels were very limited (one or two cable channels) and the tv reception was not the best, but that was no big deal all things considered.

If the Twizel township is on your stop-over map, then for solid & honest accommodation I recommend the Mountain Chalet Motel.

  • Liked — It was all good.
  • Disliked — The TV reception and choices could be improved.

Stayed here after hiking through Mount Cook. Hotel was a relatively close drive from the mountains and as Twizel is the only closeby "big city", we decided to stay here so we could stock up on groceries and have some options for dinner. Our room was an individual cabin which was cute and also clean and fine for a 1 night stay.

Because the property I really wanted to stay at in Mt. Cook was fully booked, I made reservations for a one-night stay at Mountain Chalets. I was very pleasantly surprised at how quaint it was.

The property is very easy to reach and is a five minute walk down the road from the town shopping center which offers a supermarket and one restaurant I can recommend for a lovely steak dinner, "Hunters". In this same center are a Thai restaurant and one or two others to choose from. The shopping center is just on the other side of the town playground.

The chalet had more cooking amenities than I had imagined and was able to make eggs and toast for breakfast with the use of an electric skillet and toaster. A refrigerator and microwave oven are also in the room. There is a washer w/laundry soap and dryer available for use which is quite convenient.

Overall, the chalet we had (#1) was quaint. It does get quite cold at night in the winter so bring extra warm pajamas.

The town is very quiet but it is indeed a great place to stay for the price and is a quick 45 minute drive up to Mt. Cook. While in the area and if the weather permits, DO take the Mt. Cook Airlines scenic flight around the mountain for wonderful views of the mountains and glaciers which, if you pay the extra price, is worth it to land on. You're allowed off the plane for about ten minutes to take photos. It's well worth it but not for those who are afraid of heights or of being in enclosed compartments. You do fly close to the mountains but it is exhilarating.

I have stayed in the chalets a number of times and it is my accommodation of choice for visits to Mt. Cook with visitors to the South Island. The chalets are located soon after as you enter Twizel from Rt. 6. The chalets are well located for trips to Mt. Cook and Twizel offers much easier access to Mt Cook than Tekapo, for example.

Our chalet was an A frame with a queen bed in a bedroom downstairs and three twin beds upstairs. The lodge was nice with kitchen facilities that included everything that we needed including a coffee plunger as well as a lounge area with a TV. The upstairs was a bit dark and hot due to the A frame in the summer months, but a ceiling fan helps. The chalet was clean and quiet. We took a photo of ourselves in front of the chalet the last time that I was there and it was funny to see other guests doing the same. It seemed that everyone was generally happy with their stay. Friendly owner who greets you with a container of milk to keep for you tea or coffee in the morning. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the chalets to friends.

  • Disliked — Not much to do in Twizel, but the town is not why you stay here.
