“An oldie but a goodie!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2012

We stayed at the Mountain Chalet Motel in June. It is an icon of Twizel so it was the only place we could think of! Yes it is an older motel but it is very clean! I was happy to let my daughter crawl around the unit with no problems! Great having the sleeping space upstairs and the other bedroom downstairs. Bathroom was a little cold but that was more down to the frost outside!

Room Tip: Some rooms have been renovated!

We stayed in a 2 bedroom chalet. The upstairs room had 3 single beds, and downstairs was a double/queen size.
The unit was cold when we arrived, but once the heat pump was on, it warmed up nicely.
The only thing I would say to be aware of is the upstairs room is not closed off, it has a mesanine floor. But if everyone goes to bed at the same time not a biggie.
I liked the fact you don't get the noise of neighbours banging around beside you, being all separated stand alone units.
They are also pet friendly.

The staff were friendly. The unit was very cold. The heat pump didn't appear to be strong enough to heat the unit. We ended up going out for dinner to get warm. Reasonable price.

The two storey chalets were great - with 3 single beds on the top and one double bed on the first floor. Kitchen was great for cooking and the sole toilet was clean. Good selection of TV channels.

It is less than 5 minutes from the town centre by car, and you must know that it is a small but cosy town. We ate at the Alpine Takeaway - servings of Fish and Chips were large and freshly cooked upon placing our orders. We also dined at Poppies - show your room key and get a 10% discount. Food was good.

We bought some groceries from their local supermarket and it has a good selection.

Great view of the night sky and natural terrain.

We took a family unit with a double bed and a single bed. Room is big and beds are comfortable. Bed heater is provided which is great for a very cold night. Free wifi but only 20mb. Very near to the petrol station and the town with supermarkets and restaurants. Definitely the best place for a stopover from Lake Pukaki and to Mount Cook NAtional Park. Recommended to stay there.

I stayed at the Mountain Chalet Motels overnight on 1/5/12 with my parents who are seniors, as a base from which to explore Mt Cook National Park. We wanted to be close to Mt Cook, and just wanted simple affordable accomodation. The Mountain Chalet Motels is an absolutely ideal choice. Comfortable, cosy, and cute fully self-contained units. There was one bedroom downstairs, and I had the second bedroom upstairs which actually had three single beds so it would be an ideal reasonably priced option for families. The upstairs in the A frame units is wonderfully cosy because of the A framed roof design of the units, and overlooks the downstairs lounge so I'm sure kids would love it. Very short walk to local shops with a great full range supermarket very handy. Tidy and clean units and good value for money. Great location to easily explore Mt Cook.

We stayed here on our way to Doubtful Sound. The chalets are older but very nice. The property was quiet. Nice restaurants are nearby in a small town with lots of charm.
