“Mackenzie Country Inn Twizel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2014

Pleasant drive the next day to Mt. Cook, however the motel itself leaves a little to be desired. Getting quite shabby and saggy beds. Was quite disappointed. Dining was good, nice food and well priced. Bathrooms need total renovation. Nothing really to do in Twizel.

Room Tip: Check one out before you take it.

having read a few negative reviews, I was not sure what to expect. We usually stay in Tekapo en route to Queenstown, but as Lake Tekapo was full, we decided to stay in Twizel and thought it would make a change. The hotel was actually quite good and had everything we needed. As previous reviewers have mentioned, there was some bubbling on the ceiling probably due to an old leak that had not been repainted and there was a stain on the carpet.

But, that aside, we had a really large room with a great view over a garden at the back of the hotel. Lovely comfy leather effect recliner chairs, everything was clean and plenty of fluffy towels, toiletries and a big bath tub. We were able to dry our swimming stuff for $3 at the guest laundry, wifi was $5 for 24 hours and good reception. beds were really comfy and heaps of pillows. We had a room with two queen beds and I loved the fact that there were was a bedside table by each outer side and in the middle, so 3 in total, unlike the following hotel that just had one altogether! staff were really friendly and helpful as well.

Our son enjoyed playing with the resident hotel cat who was a hit with all the kids staying and the hotel bar had a lovely roaring fire in the evening. Owing to a coach tour arriving and finding out that only a buffet was available, we remembered what we had read and popped across the road to Poppies. Just managed to snag the last available table, - terrific food, great atmosphere, may be tempted to stop in twizel more often just so we can eat there.

yes, it could do with a little bit of a repaint, but it had everything we needed. It also felt like it had a little bit of 'soul' unlike some of the bigger chains. On a final note, Breakfast was o.k, we only wanted toast and cereals, but the cooked breakfast looked a little school canteen like. That said, for a one night stop over, we were quite happy and would definitely consider staying there again overnight if we were passing through and needed to break our journey.

This hotel needs to be revamped urgently. The room had wallpaper hang off, badly stained sink, in fact the whole bathroom needed replacing. Unfortunately the food rather suited the hotel, poor. The location was OK but the town closes at 17.00 hrs. Poppies bar across the road was better than the hotel and there was also another bar in the shopping area (shopping mall on the signs)

I hate using the lowest rating but I was very disappointed with my stay. The motel looks lovely from the outside and is close to Mt Cook and other sites but the inside is a huge letdown and needs a major refurbishment. My room is from maybe 1960 (before my time) with a built-in heating unit in the wall and a built in radio into the bedside table. The room has a stink from probably back then even with all windows open. I'd say the carpet and bathroom may be a few ywars newer but the carpet is worn down. The bed is harder than a rock and my back aches horribly. The bathroom is really from another error with the faucet handles on the sink a yellow colour but were previously clear plastic. On the bright side, I only had one night. I didn't even try the restaurant. Since it was prepaid, if I had a second night, I would have left and paid for something else. This motel has such potential - it is a shame.

booked a new deluxe room and got a very old standard one because of 'double booking'. no notice or apology. got a small discount after the fact.

carpets very old, stinky and pulling away, wallpaper peeling off the wall, roof leak and mould approx 1m long.
to cap it off breakfast staff were very unfriendly and the scrambled and poached eggs were terrible.
such a poor experience we will never go to Twizel again.

Room Tip: Rather keep going and stay at Mt Cook. Web site photos are miles from the reality

We've stayed before, so we knew what to expect. It's a big hotel by rural New Zealand standards, obviously built to capture coach parties, but that's not a negative. Rooms are large and rather dated but ours was clean and shiny and completely up to standard. They have big sliding windows and a space outside which is too small to call a patio or balcony, about 18 inches wide. Rooms either look on to the lawns at the back or the car park at the front.

My big gripe about this stay is that there was a wedding on the Friday. I realise that weddings are important business for hotels, so why did they put us in room 50 which was the nearest one to the wedding party? We had to keep our curtains closed during the day because wedding guests were peering through our window from four metres away, and also keep the windows shut until about 2am. We were assured that the noise would end at midnight, but then 1230 passed and, thankfully, they all left or went back to their rooms. What was unforgiveable was that the staff, clearing up, then spent the next hour shouting to one another outside the windows.

I complained to the receptionist on check out and she said that we were in room 50 because we had requested an accessible room. She also said that we had been originally put in another accessible room at the far end of the corridor but the manager had decided to give us the noisy room.

It's a nice hotel which, under normal circumstances, I would recommend. But the noise completely soured the stay for us.

By the way, don't eat in the restaurant. Across the road is the wonderful Poppy's Restaurant.

Room Tip: Stay away from wedding parties on the lawn

Twizel is a good base for visiting Mount Cook where accommodation is expensive. We had a deluxe room on the first floor and you do have to use the stairs as there is no lift. The room was spacious and well appointed. I have read some of the other reviews and could not find fault with the room and had no problem sleeping. The bar area was good but can be busy at times if coach parties are styaing. The breakfast was fine and all staff friendly and helpful.
A great room with breakfast all for around £80.

Hello David716

Thank you for your feedback.
We receive considerable feedback from guests on how well they sleep in the hotel, particularly in the Deluxe wing. I am glad to see you found the staff friendly and helpful, we do have a very good team currently.
The bar can be a busy place in the Summer season. Over Winter it is a great place to sit by the fire with a good book and a mulled wine after a hard days skiing or salmon fishing.

Thank you again
