“Okay for a night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

We stayed there in the 55 AUD cabin which was okay for one night. Isolation is quite bad and the cabins are quite aged but it's okay for the price. Beds and facilities are clean and the kitchen actually has a nice tv. Showers are very good. No free WiFi which I think should be standard these days.

If you need an accommodation on the way to mount cook then it's not too bad.

Stayed for one night in January.
It's a great location right on the lake and very popular with family groups. This place ends up absolutely chockablock full during rowing events.
The common areas - kitchens, abolition blocks were very clean. Staff were very helpful.
I stayed in a tourist flat. Unfortunately it wasn't really a good decision. Better option would have been a basic cabin - it's not worth the extra for the tourist flat. However the new motel units which are practically lake front look really good.
I'd be happy to return, but not booking a tourist flat.

Room Tip: Choose either a motel unit or a basic cabin (or camp in a tent). The tourist flats aren't worth...

price is more expensive than most. Toilets and facilities look very tired. Playground is rundown with pathetic play items. large campground and equally many people. Don't really know how to get around as the roads are pretty run down as well and makeshift homes, campervans etc are all parked seemingly everywhere. i understand later that this is a popular 2nd home for locals especially those who enjoy canoeing. However, for me, a passerby, i can't find myself enjoying privacy, tidiness or anything that will make me excited so really...perhaps this isn't so much a tourist accomodation but probably a good local hangout. Still it doesn't justify the pricing at all. The lake is also a long walk away and is a far cry from lake pukaki or tekapo when it comes to taking a pic from the shores of the premise. Service was quick - A smile, a very short briefing, pay and begone. Another very busy place for the likes of others.

We stayed in two of the new motel units in June 12. The location is lovely - very quiet and peaceful and located by the side of the lake. All the furnishings are of good quality - comfortable beds, quality linen, lovely couch and good sized TV. The Owner (Tony) is a hard case and very helpful.

Lake Ruataniwha is the main South Island National Rowing venue, just meters from the motels. They are really nicely appointed, near new units with high spec. fittings, good heating for cooler months and enormous king sized beds. Linen and bed spreads are high quality as are the kitchen utensils and cutlery. Great staff and very safe quiet location, not too far from Twizel.

Room Tip: All rooms bright and sunny, open spaces so go for a room with lake views

The location of this place is either excellent or poor depending on your purpose for being in Twizel.
If you are into rowing or watersports in general the location is great as it is right on the lakefront but if you are just backpacking or passing through the location is bad as it is out of Twizel itself and without transport it is to far to access by walking.
The campground is old and the cabins we stayed in were very very old but they were functional and the bunk beds newish.
The common showers and kitchen were okay but again quite old.
One of the other drawbacks with this place is that while we were there some people seemed to be living there which is not a good thing when it comes to campgrounds.
So it was okay but not very memorable really.
