As a gift to my surfer hubby, I managed to get a somewhat difficult resi on Tavarua with a couple of months notice.
Unfortunately for tourists, and great and fair for the locals,Tavarua no longer has exclusive rights to Cloudbreak and the other reefs. But it's still epic and not too badly crowded.(depending on day and swell)
Big Bummer: you are still paying top dollar to be there despite loss of exclusivity, which is a little lame. But it's a beautiful little island with super nice staff, great owners, and yummy good for you food (tho woe is you who takes too much on the first pass at the buffet, you will get a stink face. Hold your ground and ask for more anyway)
You will meet amazing like-minded people from all over the world, the shelling is epic, the kava is strong, the grounds are lovely, the pool is perfect with perfect view.
It's communal. Not exactly romantic. Don't forget to pack your personality. This place is way more fun if you get to know people.
Take extra money to buy some pearls, great sarongs and Tavarua hats in the gift shop...and for your drinks.
All in all, not typical end to a honeymoon, but we're not typical couple. And we spent first week in kinda typical over the top honeymoon place. We just wanted to get over to Tavarua. Jamie, the owners super cool wife, had one of the boatmen take us out to private strip of sand in middle of the ocean that turns into heavenly little beach as the tide goes down. We had an hour to, ahem, have fun,
Tavarua was worth it for street cred alone, but definitely amazing on many levels ;)
