“Honeymoon At Cloudbreak”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

As a gift to my surfer hubby, I managed to get a somewhat difficult resi on Tavarua with a couple of months notice.
Unfortunately for tourists, and great and fair for the locals,Tavarua no longer has exclusive rights to Cloudbreak and the other reefs. But it's still epic and not too badly crowded.(depending on day and swell)
Big Bummer: you are still paying top dollar to be there despite loss of exclusivity, which is a little lame. But it's a beautiful little island with super nice staff, great owners, and yummy good for you food (tho woe is you who takes too much on the first pass at the buffet, you will get a stink face. Hold your ground and ask for more anyway)
You will meet amazing like-minded people from all over the world, the shelling is epic, the kava is strong, the grounds are lovely, the pool is perfect with perfect view.
It's communal. Not exactly romantic. Don't forget to pack your personality. This place is way more fun if you get to know people.
Take extra money to buy some pearls, great sarongs and Tavarua hats in the gift shop...and for your drinks.

All in all, not typical end to a honeymoon, but we're not typical couple. And we spent first week in kinda typical over the top honeymoon place. We just wanted to get over to Tavarua. Jamie, the owners super cool wife, had one of the boatmen take us out to private strip of sand in middle of the ocean that turns into heavenly little beach as the tide goes down. We had an hour to, ahem, have fun,
Tavarua was worth it for street cred alone, but definitely amazing on many levels ;)

Room Tip: Ask for a bure at the the end of the strand if you want privacy and a bit more quiet

The guys here did it up right. We stayed here back when the whole thing was special access, but I hear they are letting anyone surf here now. That's OK, Fiji needs to do what it has to. One word of caution: be very careful traveling alone, especially late at night. The Fijians have a bad reputation for mugging and aren't afraid to hurt tourists for their money. Be careful of locals that offer help. Fiji is not like Bali or Costa Rica where everyone is nice.

That being said, you will not have that problem on Tavarua. It is a small island and everyone there is extremely nice and playful. Of course, if you hit Cloudbreak on a good day, it can be the trip of your life. We surfed Tavarua Rights as well and had a blast

The staff is great here and they are willing to take you to the breaks whenever you want. Take their advice, however, as they know when the swell is hitting the best. If it's big, they'll motor around in jet skis to help out and rescue anyone who gets into trouble. Coudbreak breaks over sharp reef so be careful.

The food was also excellent, which is good because there are no other options. The pool area is great and relaxing as is the walk around the island, which you can do in about 15-20 minutes. The individual bungalows were very clean and comfortable.

This trip was amazing. We got a bus from Nadi to the pick for Tavarua. We were welcomed by the local village people selling bits and pieces at the shore line. The locals carried our bags to the boat that would transfer our things to the island. You had to wade through the water to get on the boat, but really, if this is worth complaining about then you should'nt be going. Common sense is to put your valuables in a plastic bag or carry them with you. The island itself was great. It was a communal eating area. You got to socialize with all of the other guests. We meet some really nice people. There was a large variety of food and plenty of it. This trip was for my husband to go surfing, me to relax and our daughter to have a trip away. My husband went surfing every morning and I went one morning and got some amazing photos. Cloud Break is very well known within the surfing world. Just be mindful that although the food is supplied the alcohol is not. Everything is in us dollars and your end bill can be a bit costly if you dont keep tab of it. you can take your own alcohol (not preferred by management) and there is a mini bar fridge in your room. The rooms were cleaned everyday. They were spacious, had air conditioning and ceiling fans. We did not struggle at night to sleep at all. There are hammocks for your to read on, water sport equipment to use as well. My husband and daughter went fishing and caught some big yellow fin tuna fish that was given to the village. The local women will gladly keep your children occupied for a small amount of money to give you a break. A break to get a massage or facial from the beauty shop on the island. I had a relaxing time and felt refreshed when I got home. We will be going back in the near future. my husband surfed everyday in serious surf as well as surfed with his daughter on the break out the front. 10/10 for a holiday destination.

Room Tip: Excellent destination for couples and families.

Still smiling about this solo surf trip! Expensive, really expensive but epic destination.
10 hour flight or so, pick-up at airport, couple hours hanging out at a local hotel waiting for bus & panga ride to Tavarua. Bus & panga is an hour or so.

Arrive, check-in and out to Restaurants--- A world class surf break right in front of your bure.
Cloudbreak and other breaks are short panga rides.
Surf Report: I went off-season: flat 2 days, scary big at CB 1 day and head high plus all the other days. Never crowded--- less then 12 people or so in line-up. Like surfin with best bros...hooting each other.

Family style dining so Everyone gets to know each other: solo surfers, couples & families.
(Only about 35 people when I was there). Food is excellent--- not bunk surfer style but not foodie gourmet either.

Rooms are a little underwhelming: threadbare sheets and cracked bathroom tiles. Rooms definitely need updating but nothing that would totally turn-off a spouse. Geckos in room at night and hiss-- kinda weird. No bug/ mosquito problems while I was there.
Pool is nice and relaxing and you get a killer view of restaurants surf break right there!
Return is the same, hanging for a couple hours before flight back to USA.
Way, way worth it!

Beautiful small island. 30 minute boat transfer in an open boat without any life jackets offered or even safety brief for passengers. Suggest plan before and have your kids with their own. Luggage is carried in same or other open boat and is hand carried from shore to boat and back both ends - risk of being dropped in water or getting wet in boat (as ours did)- pack all valuable contents in ziplock or similar. Transfer requires wading in water at both ends so wear something on your feet as rocks and coral is sharp. Wonderful snorkeling, Stand-Up Paddle Boards and sights. Surfing is apparently amazing.TC Evans messed up our trip a lot so did not get full advantage and unable to get any Scuba Diving. Very laid back resort, locals are very friendly.

Room Tip: Only two options the larger or smaller Villa's (Beach Bure). Take your own first aid kits etc...

I'm amazed there aren't more reviews on this place... must be people would rather keep this gem a secret. This was our second trip to Fiji, first time to Tavarua. From the moment we stepped onto the island, we were greeted with warm smiles from genuine people who seemed as excited as we were to be at this magical place. Of course Tavarua is famous for its proximity to world class surf breaks, namely, Cloudbreak. But as a non-surfer, I can attest to having other island activities to keep me occupied like: snorkeling, boating excursions, treks to the sandbar, paddle boarding, tide pool scoping, shell hunting, or just chilling in one of the many hammocks for some true decompression time. We also rallied the island staff for some seriously fun beach volleyball sessions -- those guys are HILARIOUS and REALLY good (especially the bartender, Rups!). I also enjoyed a traditional Fijian massage, which was INCREDIBLE (get ready to slip into a coma).

The place has a community vibe and you'll get to know the other guests and hear about their day's adventures during happy hour jacuzzi dips and family style dinner. Food was great, particularly all the fresh seafood and poke provided by daily local fishing trips (another activity if you're into it). One thing is certain, you will never be hungry.

Bures were clean, cool, and stocked with Pure Fiji products -- the BEST! Worth a trip to the island gift shop to stock up if you like them (way cheaper than in the states).

We'll definitely be back!

Room Tip: Bure #8 has dual hammocks right out front.

I have been all over the world and I have to say I have NEVER had an experience like Tavarua Island. It is the most beautiful, magical, enchanting, and super fun place you will ever find. There is so much to do here while the boys go to the surf breaks. You can catch super fun beginner waves with the help of the locals, you can fish, snorkel, stand up paddle board, play tennis, explore the island, collect unreal sea shells, take dip in the pool, or my favorite just sit on the beach with a cool Vonu and read a good book. This trip is a MUST!!!! We took our 2 year old daughter and it was the PERFECT family vacation! We met so many great people and families who were also staying on the island, which made it even more memorable. We plan to go again next year...for TWO weeks this time! Book with Henry at Wavehunters. Henry took the time to answer all my questions. Henry got the dates that we wanted booked while another popular booking agency told me they were "full that week", plus we saved $$ booking through Wavehunters.

Room Tip: Bure #1 or #2. Best side of the Island for swimming, sandy beach, and close to boat shed to catch bo...
