“Nice But Overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2008

We stayed for 6 nights with our young family. The grounds were beautiful, the food was delicious, however very heavily overpriced. The kids eat free only applied if you eat at 1 of the restaurants inside Shangri-la. A hamburger & chips was FJ$29.80, the buffet dinner was FJ$50.00 pp. The drinks also were very expensive. You are better off going into Sigatoka town shops to get some groceries, they sell alcohol there to, & are heaps cheaper. At the front desk you can organise a taxi, however if you talk to staff around the resort, some staff have connections & will offer you a taxi about FJ$10 cheaper to the resort's price. Some of the staff were really friemdly, others didn't even smile, & it seemed that they were saying Bula because they felt they had to.
There were dance shows at night, they charge FJ$75, but we stayed at the island & it was free nightly entertainment. However you get a meal with it, however at the island our meals were included. We found that if you wanted to do anythin, you needed money, as there was not a lot of free activities. The staff were not very helpful with letting us know what was on each day. We ended up finding a pamphlet that was at the back of 1 of the cupboards in the room, underneath a few other papers.
We used kids club, however the staff were not very enthusiastic with the kids. They did pretty good activities sometimes, however whenever I dropped them off they were all just sitting on chairs watching tv. I was expecting them to also be a lot friendlier.
Overall, the beach was quite nice, the pools were nice, the views from the Coral Wing pool were beautiful! However, I probably wouldn't stay here again, due to everything being so heavily priced & I don't think it's value for money and lives up to being a 4 and a half star resort.

We have just returned from Shangri la after 6 days of bliss! We were welcomed and offered free juice on arrival - friendly staff! Our children (5 & 7) loved the staff at the kids club and the activities which was great as my partner and I were able to go snokerling, round of golf, tennis etc... together before picking up the kids to go swimming in the lagoon pool or beautiful warm beach. The kids club at night was fantastic (from 7-9pm) activites included lizard hunting, crab catching, crab races and a movie - our children made so many friends- always reminding us to "hurry and register for kids club!" Food was expensive. We caught a cab (F$27 return) to Sigatoka (10 min drive) to stock up on bread, vegemite, water, snacks etc...which saved $. We did eat well at breakfast though (at Takali or Lagoon restaurants) so that feulled us for the day! Kids ate free - mostly fried chips, fish, sausage rolls - more variety and fruit on offer would have been better. The Natadola Magical tour is a must do - F$102 per adult and F$52 child (Under 6=free) includes shopping in town 1hr, sightseeing before a visit to Samo villiage where you experience true Fiji culture, welcoming/karva ceremony, dancing, singing - great experience for our kids - villiage people were very welcoming. Then onto Natadola beach (voted 7th best beach in the world) - swimming, boogie boards provided, horseriding and a beautiful bbq and salads - beer and champagne drinking comps for adults and juice drinking comps for kids - FUN!! Full day tour 9-4pm so great value. Also did the Sugar train tour which was great too. There is always something to do or see at Shangri la - our kids had the time of their lives and 6 days was not long enough for us! Will be back next year!
Small gripe: this is a credit card only resort - everything you buy from postage stamps to tours is billed to your room - so keep a tally and ask for a print out from the lobby every other night to check it coressponds to your records. We had 2 discrepencies not including F$5 that was automatically charged on arrival for the Sigatoka Hospital Fund - which I paid but would have preferred to be asked BEFORE it was charged. Other families we spoke with had 1 or 2 queries on their accounts.

We have just come back from 6 nights, which definately was not long enough. After reading the bad reviews I was a little worried what to expect. Hubby, 2 kids ages 5 & 10 and myself enjoyed every minute there. Stayed in an Ocean Family room as we could not get into a Lagoon Room and had to pay a bit extra. Glad we did as the room was bigger and we bascially had our own swimming pool and I felt it was more private. All the meals were great and yes you do pay a bit more than what you would at home on a meal out but you are on holiday and that is what it is all about. Cocktails were great and I don't think the wine was overpriced as alot of bars here charge the same. Just be careful ordering spirits as friends were charged $22.00 for a double Jim beam eek. Most of the staff were so happy and friendly and nothing seemed to be a problem. Wasn't sure about going on the magical tour because of the cost but glad we did as the kids loved it. All the guests were friendly and we met some great people. Already planning the next trip back.

We recently stayed in a Beach Bure with our 4 children.

The Bure was private, modern and well furnished with a patio, sun lounges a hammock and direct acess to the water, albeit over a rock retaining wall, but as such we rarely used the pools.

My husband and I went scuba diving while staying at the resort. The operation is fairly casual and relaxed although safety was maintained. While we did this one of our children went to Kids Club - but was not keen to go back as she was a bit bored.

Our room rate included buffet breakfast and dinner for 2 adults and children under 12 ate free! Our family particularly enjoyed the buffet dinners. These were not matched at any of the other resorts we visited during our 10 day stay in Fiji! We enjoyed the sushi and sashimi, curry and stirfries to order...the children particularly like the plethora of individually plated desserts and the chocolate fountain!

We went to the Fire Walking and Fijiian Feast which we enjoyed. The shellmarket was also worth a visit!

Our girls had their hair braided - not only did it look fantastic, it seems that it was the cheapest braiding available in Fiji!

Overall the staff were friendly and we had a wonderful start to our holiday at this resort...we would definitely return.

My wife and I took out 2 kids to the Shagri La after comparing websites and speaking to the travel agent. We had an Ocean View room overlooking the coral beach. The view was nice and my son loved walking along the coral beach each morning looking for crabs, star fish and anything else he could find. The Lagoon beach was good to swim at and the water nice and warm. The beach chairs were in need of attention. Many of them were mouldy or partly broken. Most but not all of the staff were extremely friendly. We did the natadola magical tour which although overpriced, was enjoyable. We also did a Captain Cook cruise to Mystey Island (booked through the onsite travel agent) which we thought was very well priced and most enjoyable. The Island was unihabited and stunning. It was like being in Paradise for the day.
One big negative was the price of food. The buffett dinner offered each night at $f 50.00 per head was dreadfully overpriced. We asked for a glass of water each instead of ordering drinks each night to try and save some money and it took 30 minutes to be arrive each time even after I complained to a staff member. The stirfry purposly cooked for you was nice and the hotpots and curries were terrible. Some nights there were oysters on offer but these were not overly fresh and some were partly frozen.
We ate lunh mostly at the Coral Restaurant. The chicken wrap was very nice but at $f 16.00 each, the price was abit hard to swallow. If we were to return, we would go to Sigatoka on the first day and stock up on noodles etc for a cheap dinner every second night.
The games room was looking very tired and many of the games were out of order.
Overall, I did enjoy my stay but now that I am smarter and wiser, would return to the Shanri la and do a few things differently.

After hereing about all the bad things people have been saying about the shangri-la we were quite worried about going, even though we had booked.

At the reception we were greeted by lovely musicians and a glass of pineapple juice, the walk to our room was long, but we didnt need to carry our bags.

We stayed in a Lagoon View Room, it was smaller then expected but it was still clean with no musky smell, besides all you do is sleep and get ready in there. dont make beds, the maids do it, and they can change your sheets everyday if you like. If you want fresh towels leave them on the floor.

The Lagoon Pool was excellent and was back to back with the lagoon beach. The beach was clear and very warm. Snorkelling + kayaking is free, and there are many fish to see. There are ectivities for everyone including adults to participate in such as pool basketball, soccer, and much more.

You could kick back by the pool and beach and call wondering waiters to order your cocktails (yummy), delivered right to your deck chair, aswell as food.

Kids disco is everyynight 7:30pm 8:30pm., and kids club runs from morning till 9:00pm, babysitters love the kids, and can have them till late.!!!!!! Vlack Marlin bar is open till 1am

Food isnt expensive, as when you convert it to AU$ its the same .Food is great not bad like everyone has been saying.

Do the magical tour, you go to Sigatoka to shop, go to a school, have a kava ceremony and go to a stunning beach, its definetly the highlight of the holiday.

The hospitalilty is great and the workers are lovely and always willing to help, they made our stay the best, and they treat you like royalty.

We will be coming back next year definetally.

Our family of 2 adults and 2 boys, 9 and 7 have just returned from 9 nights at the Shangri-La. We hadn't been to the Shangri-La for 13 years and all the good things were just as I remembered. What a fabulous place for both adults and children. The boys were never asking "what can we do now" - if they weren't in the Little Chiefs Club, they were swimming, snorkelling, having an hour or so watching tv, playing tennis or in the games room. After a couple of days unwinding, my husband and I just wandered about, thinking about where we might have dinner, whether we would have a game of tennis etc. etc. - just as a holiday should be.

The staff at the Shangri-La are fantastic, always friendly - we only encountered "Fiji time" once and that was when the boys were late back from a tour but we were told they were going to be late and it was only because there was so much to see. I've never seen such smiles on their faces as when they got off the bus with Alfred to tell us what they had seen and done.

We met some great people who all seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves and can only say, have no reservations about the Shangri-La - we couldn't have had a better holiday.
