“Perfect for family holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2013

We so enjoyed our holiday at this resort. The kids loved the kids club. The babysitter for our 2 year and outside club hours was professional, kind and engaging with our three children.

The food was wonderful. We had full board but I caution anyone who chooses this option because "kids eat free" only in one place as long as an adult eats too. This made eating options very limiting for the adults. For example, we had a babysitter for the kids so we could eat our meal alone later but they couldn't eat free if we didn't buy a meal using our board allowance. That loop hole was disappointing. Next time, I would ensure full board included the kids meals without this limitation.

The cocktails were to die for.

I found the bed comfy.

The pool and beach were perfect.

The health spa was glorious!!

The mini golf was too expensive!

Overall I would recommend and I would go back.

This was not my first trip to fiji after being married at the highly recommended Warwick resort. We unfortunately this time booked the westin on denarau and had to be moved to the shAngri-la due to cyclone evan. I wouldn't normally comment on a page like this, but read the most recent comments and need to make unaware travellers what they are getting themselves into by staying at this resort. We had to be moved after two nights due to being 'smoked' out of our room on the second night and waking at 6am. The people above our room had been smoking and it had travelled through the air con system-very unpleasant. People also need to be aware that EVERY room has interconnecting doors with the room beside it, you can hear EVERYTHING in the room next door, including the screaming babies; conversations, breaking wind and if people wake at 2am in the morning. Needless to say this resort meant that we had one, out of six restful nights sleep. The rooms are not clean, there was mould on the glass on the pictures hanging in the room, mould on the lampshades, mould everywhere in the bathroom, and I don't even want to know what was on the bed skirt?? There was one day when our room didn't even get serviced and we had to wait until 10pm for fresh towels!!!
Moving on from the rooms, despite a cyclone, this resort is 'falling down around their ears'. Laser light had holes in it, decks were lifting, the adults only pool had big cracks around the top of it.
Please don't waste your money staying here, think twice before staying, this isn't a 'true fiji experience' or the luxury resort it is marketed as. Spend the extra time and drive to the warwick OR spend the extra money and stay at the intercontinental.
Wish I hadn't have made the mistake staying here, and we had numerous conversations with other couples along this same tone.

My husband and I visted the Shangri La 28/12 - 7/12. We had hoped to stay at a resort that was less tailored to families, but obviously were given some bad advice This hotel is very much for families. There is an Adults Only pool and breakfast, but you will soon get sick of the scenary if you only visit these spots each day.

The overall hotel is OK. For a Shangri La I was expecting more glamour. The hotel is definatly in need of a face lift. The Shangri La occupies it's own island and the resort itself is pretty spread out, so the location of your room is very important. We were in room 901. The condition was good. Thelocation was perfect. It was a bottom floor room which means you have two entries to your room. You walked out to a private grass area that overlooked the ocean. It was also right in between the resorts resturants and facilities. Good spot.

There are SEVEN places to eat -
Beach Bar and Grill: This is a smaller more cafe feeling spot. It is close to the main pool, and overlooks the ocean. We had lunch here several times and dinner once. The service was not consistent. Some days the servers were very attentive (Joseva 12:15 31/12/12) but we had lunch one day and were less than impressed with the sour attitude of the woman that served us (3/1/13 13:50) It was a real let down. But you will find this is the theme throughout the hotel, some outstanding staff and some I wouldn't ever want working for me.

Lagoon Terrace: This is probably considered the main restarant. It is a buffet and approx $42(AUS) per person which i thought was a bit expensive. There was a large selection of food which changed each night. We had dinner there twice, but it is the prefered restaurant of the families. We did do a take away lunch from there one day and it was a disaster. They do a standard lunch box that you can eat where you like, but when we got to the front of the line most things were sold out, and it was only half way through lunch service. This happened alot at the hotel, numbers are not appropriately catered for, which is surprising as you are too far from shops to go else where to eat. This was the best place for breakfast.

Golden Cowrie: WORST EXPERIENCE! Our first night at the hotel we booked in here (NOTE: You have to book dinner each day. If you dont you will miss out) After a day of travelling we were tired and hungry, we could only get in at 20:15. Very hungry, it took forever for anyone to take our order or give us a drinks menu. We waited 2 hours for our entree, finished a bottle of wine before we got even a sniff of food. No apologies, no bread, no nothing! When i cancelled my main as it was too late to eat a main meal it seemed to be the biggest issue... We tried breakfast there the next day, it was very bare and sad. We never went back!!

Kalevu:
This was amazing! We ate here twice. It is the more up market restaurant and has a dress code. It is the kind or dinig we enjoy back at home, and the staff were lovely. The food was great. We worked out that a 3 course meal and bottle of wine was only $20 more than the buffet, so we shouldve eaten there every night. We were served both times by Tuiwaitui, a lovely young man who made our night.

Takali:
This is OK. The service is slow (dont wait til you are thirsty to order a drink) but the food was very tasty. But again there were things we ordered that they had run out of. If it only happened once it would be ok, but it seemed like everytime we made our mind up (at all but Kalevu) we would have to choose something else.

Marau Village:
This is a dinner and show. Traditional food, with dancing, fire show. We did this for NYE. It was good fun, but you would only do this for one night on your stay.

Cafe Coral:
Cafe style but Champange Prices....

There are TWO bars - Just remeber dont wait til you REALLY need a drink to order one. Drink service is VERY SLOW!!!

The beach near the lagoon pool is very nice and we spent a lot of time there. This is where families hang as it is near the main kids pool. This is ok, but what was very annoying was that families would put towels over rows of sun lounges pre breakfast meaning there were less for us to use when we came down, but they wouldnt actually use them til almost lunch time. There is not a system in place to monitor this, but is was very bad manners.

We played mini golf. A bit of fun $7.50pp. We took our tennis stuff over and thought we would play each day... NOPE, it is sooo hot we only lasted 10 mins. We really enjoyed the snorkeling. We took our own masks, shouldve taken flippers too. There are snorkleing tours each day $22pp but if you have all your own gear you can do the same thing for free. The water is amazing - really loved it! We also had a few beach massages 30mins $25pp. All the staff who worked at the activites were great, we didnt have any difficulties.

One disappointment was the hotel advertises their own fishing charter, but when we asked about it there was no boat, no explanation, and no advice on where we could go.... The golf course was also unusable, lucky we didnt take my brother in law or id never hear the end of it.

We walked the whole resort and it is preatty nice. The best rooms are the Bures, but they are at either end of the resort. I still think our room was best spot, and ground floor is a must. There are very few places at the resort where you can use cash, and you can not settle your bill with cash, so if (like us) you spens most days at the resort dont bother changing over a lot of money the exchange rate is hideous when i had to change it back in Oz. I think this might add to the problem of the slow and inconsistent service. With a charge to room system no one is carrying cash, so no one is giving tips, and therefore no incentive for staff to go that extra mile.

We did a day tour to Robinson Crusoe Island.... DONT DO IT. It was rubbish. I will leave my review about that on their site.

Overall the hotel is GOOD. If you are a family travelling, especially with other families, this place is made for you. There is kids clubs and $4ph baby sitting. But if you are like us and enjoy kid free time, this hotel is not for you. The facilities need a make over but they were ok. The food overall was GOOD, but the service more often then not was BAD. If i am a paying customer I am not interested in the idea of FIJI TIME. 1 hour for a drink is NOT OK!

It is 1 hour drive from Nadi. (all prices mentioned are AUS). I hope this review helps.

Room Tip: Recommend bottom floor rooms of the Golden Cowrie or Reef Wing

This place is an absolute luxury to stay at as the rooms are good and it's also perfect for kids as there's plenty of space outside to play and they can also go to the little chief's club and be supervised if u want some time without the kids. The beaches are also great and so are the pools. There's also plenty of activities to take part in so it's unlikely you will get bored while staying there. The restaurants are also pretty good and they each serve different styles of meals which is good as well. Overall, an excellent place to stay and I would go back again

We loved this place, perfect to take the family. There is so much for the kids to do you hardly see them! And excellent babysitting service, that's really reasonable, so we really felt like we had had a relaxing break as well as the kids having heaps of fun. All the staff are so friendly and helpful and the food delicious and great value for money.

Upsides: Clean and comfortable; beautiful caring islanders catering to our whims; fabulous location.
Downsides: Falls short of other Shangri-La accommodation and the stated corporate standard for the group. Having to Book spa treatments/massages 4 days in advance (if you're only here for 1 week make sure you do it on your first day), running out of bacon an hour before the cessation of breakfast in the 'adult only' restaurants (but not apparently if you're prepared to pay extra for room service).; Buying Drinks vouchers in advance at fj$10 per unit for a soft drink, for the new year celebration; the disturbing news that the regular staff were told on the 1st of jan that given the up-coming democratic elections they may have to step aside from their jobs in order to accomodate the military personnel who will shortly be unemployed.

shangri-la fiji was a disappointment in the following areas:
very slow in services at restaurants (selection of wines were limited and poor), housekeeping, in-house dining service; generally wait about 15 minutes before anyone would attend to you and then maybe another 10/15 minutes to take your food/drinks order and hopefully your food would arrive about half an hour later!!!!!
lack variety in food choices amongst, even though they have 5 main (big) restaurants
running out of dry vermouth at all bars (to make a basic martini)!!!!!!!!!!
front of house lacks competence - various departments cannot seem to co-ordinate their services to meet basic requirements, no matter how painfully explicit your requests are explained

Shangri-La Fiji is a huge let down compared to the same establishment in other countries, such as Singapore, HongKong, Malaysia.

It is not even a four star but does charge 4 to 4.5 star prices...
